Description: The new Weyrleader seeks advice from the former one.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 4, day 22 of Turn 8
Notes: Mentioned: Rhosyn, Ciara
The rest of the day after the flight had felt like a whirlwind of activity. K'ran had spent the day with Rhosyn, letting her show him around the Weyr so he learned where everything was, and also letting the Weyrfolk see him and the two of them together. They'd had a public dinner and then he'd also had to go get items from Dragonsfall and talk to the leaders there. Before he'd gone to sleep, he'd scheduled a group meeting with the ranking individuals for the next morning, after breakfast and before the Threadfall. He'd also had a drudge send K'sedel a second note, offering a private meeting over breakfast before the group meeting with the leadership.
It had been polite to accept the invitation of the new Weyrleader, thought K'sedel. It was, after all, what he would have done in the man's place. His own courteous note of reply had been written by Ciara, since he still had an arm in a sling most of the time, supporting his healing shoulder. He'd suggested one of the smaller private rooms off the main dining area.
K'ran took his tray of breakfast food from the main dining area and settled into one of the small rooms. The meal looked appealing and the klah smelled amazing. He started eating while waiting for K'sedel, wondering how the other bronzerider was feeling.
"Weyrleader," K'sedel said politely as he entered the room, carrying a tray carefully in his good hand. "Good morning."
"Good morning. Do you need help with that?"
"If you could just clear a place on the table," it wasn't a refusal of the offer completely, but something that at least allowed him to keep his dignity.
K'ran moved his tray, the drinks tray, and freed up some space. "How's the arm doing, any better? And Nikornath?" he asked with genuine concern. An injury was never a pleasant thing.
"Getting there, the both of us. His wing will heal, and the healers say my shoulder will take another sevenday or so."
"Glad to hear that you're both improving." It could have been much worse - K'ran could imagine the horror of being told your dragon might not heal.
"We will manage to get back to the skies again."
K'ran wasn't sure of a delicate way of phrasing it, so he decided to be straightforward. "And when you're both cleared to fly, how would you like to serve the Weyr?"
That was one question he had asked himself already, in the last few days since it had become clear that Orlaith would rise and that Nikornath would not be able to seriously consider chasing. "There is one thing," he began. "We'll be needing a Weyrlingmaster."
Dragonsfall had been in a similar position, and it wasn't a good one. The rest of the staff was solid and that meant the weyrlings continued to have training, which was good enough. But not having anyone in the top position was still a problem because it meant no ultimate authority for the weyrlings or single point of contact for the leaders.
"That's not a good position to have unfilled," K'ran agreed. "If
you're interested in taking on the job of caring for them, I'd love to have you there."
K'sedel took a deep breath. "Then perhaps, with your permission, it might be the role for me."
"That takes a weight off," K'ran said. "And I'd like to be able to consult past you if you don't mind. You've been here so long that you must know the tempers of the whole Weyr by now, and I've so much catching up to do."
"It'll come," K'sedel told him honestly. "A sevenday or so and you'll wonder what else you ever did."
"I certainly hope so." While he had the benefit of the other man's advice, he thought he'd ask about the day's Threadfall. His late night deliberation hadn't brought him to a solid conclusion on what he should do about the fall.
"I certainly don't want to fly with the wing today when I'm totally unprepared with their formations or patterns. It'd just make me a liability. If it were you, would you stay behind and listening to how it goes, or flying at queen's level and observe from there?"
"If it were me, I'd watch for half of it, then take to the air. I'm betting your bronze will want to fly, but you also need to know where things are down here, like the lake, the dragonhealers, what their patterns are."
"That's good advice," K'ran said, appreciating it. "I'm sure your dragonhealing team is excellently trained but it's always interesting to watch them work."
"It is, I'm not sure it's something I could do."
"Especially not after Thread started falling," K'ran said with a shake of his head.
"By the way, I figure you know the people best, so if you're not
comfortable with the Weyrlingstaff I'll approve any changes you'd want to make here."
"I'll see how we go first."
"Feel free to let me know how it's going. I'll have to meet them at some point, along with everyone else." It was good he had a memory for faces, he thought as he ate a bit more of breakfast.
"I have a feeling we'll be having a lot of meetings over the next few sevendays, if you don't mind me relying on your expertise."
"That will be fine," K'sedel suspected it would be good for the Weyr in general to see the old, and the new working together. "It will take time for us both to settle into things."
"Isn't that the truth," K'ran agreed.
"Always," K'sedel agreed. "Always."
