N'vanik

Talryne looked at the infant with some apprehension.

"She's not going to bite you," N'vanik said gently. "I don't expect
you to hold her or anything. I just wanted you to meet her." He'd
wanted Tal to meet Nisha much sooner but didn't want to pressure her
into a trip to River Bluff.

He might not _expect_ it but it was clear he wanted Talryne to take
some interest in his daughter. Talryne wasn't bothered by it being
another woman's baby, especially now that N'vanik wasn't seeing Rhosyn
anymore. She was just uncertain about babies in general. **Maybe I
should...** She held her arms out. "I can-- I can try to hold her.
Just for a minute."

"You sure?"

"Yes." It would make him happy and it would challenge her to go
outside her comfort zone.

Gently, N'vanik passed Nisheyl into her arms.

Babies noticed sometimes when someone wasn't confident. Nisheyl
looked back to N'vanik as she was being passed over and threatened to
make a noise. However, when she turned and saw that bunch of brown
hair, she quieted. Instead, a grubby hand started to grab it as she brought
her own hazel eyes to look into Talryne's brown ones. "Hi."

The greeting surprised a small smile out of Talryne. "Hi." She looked
over at N'vanik. "Does she know what she's saying?"

He shrugged. "A little. She's mostly repeating sounds, but I think she
knows what 'hi' means."

"Nnnnhhh...." was the next noise as she opened and closed her fingers
over Talryne's hair. It looked like it might be going toward her mouth sooner
rather than later.

Talryne reached for the little girl's hand and tried to gently remove
her hair. She didn't want baby slobber on it.

Nisheyl saw the hand coming toward her and she interpreted it differently.
She let go of the hair and then latched on to Talryne's hand, feeling how her
skin was different than hers. "My!"

N'vanik laughed at the expression on Tal's face. "Babies grab things,
don't be so surprised."

"I just wasn't expecting it." As long as Nisheyl didn't squeeze too
tight it was fine. It had been a long time since Talryne had willingly
been around babies.

"Go and sit with her for a bit." N'vanik guided her over to the couch.

He looked so pleased, she couldn't say no. And really it wasn't so
bad. So they all sat, with Talryne holding Nisheyl on her lap.

Nisheyl continued to play with Talryne's hand, grabbing and stroking it
while her other hand latched onto Talryne's tunic to steady her. "Shhh..."

Talryne bounced the girl lightly, her nervousness starting to fade. "I
think she looks a little like you."

"Really?" He thought so, too, but wondered if it was wishful thinking.

"She's got your eyes."

"Rhosyn has hazel eyes, too."

"Oh. Well." Talryne studied Nisheyl's face. "I still think, they're
_your_ eyes." She felt odd, but not jealous, holding N'vanik's child
by another woman.

Nisheyl liked the bouncing and she let out a stream of "Wuuuhh uhhhh uhhh"
as she kept her eyes glued to Talryne. Her mouth was open wide in a smile,
showing a few small baby teeth that had come in.

N'vanik smiled, his chest filling with warmth as he watched them. He
knew this wasn't easy for Tal but she seemed to be doing okay. The
fact that she was willing to spend a little time with Nisha meant a
lot to him.

Babies might not be so bad if Talryne didn't have to raise them.
Foster parents would do most of the work. "I guess I'm entertaining
enough for a baby."

Scooting closer, N'vanik waved at Nisha. "Hi, honey."

Right on cue, Nisheyl repeated her favorite word. "Hi!!!" Then she produced a
squeal after. Wiggling some, she twisted her body to wave back. Waving was
easy and it usually made people smile.

N'vanik's smile widened and he kept waving. Talryne gave him an amused
look. "You, good with babies. I never would have guessed."

"Neither would I." He kissed Tal on the cheek. "You're not doing so
bad yourself."
