"It's starting," she said to herself. The low rumbling of dragons in a
familiar hum told her the event was about to start. She flew into her
room to dress in the costume she'd discussed with N'vanik and was
almost ready when she heard the inevitable knock.
"Coming," she called. K'deren had gone to River Bluff to check on his
father and he hadn't planned on being back today so he wasn't' there
to get the door.
"Hey," she smiled when she pulled the door open.
"Hey," N'vanik returned with a smile. "You look lovely." He leaned in
to give her a kiss on the cheek.
"Do you think Loseth could call Donneth back? They're at River Bluff
with K'sedel and Ciara. Panitath is a little distracted right now and
I can't get her to focus."
She turned to a table by the door and picked up narrow box. "This is
for you Weyrleader," she smiled. It was her custom to give her clutch
sire's rider a gift at hatching and this was a particularly fine belt
knife.
N'vanik's eyes unfocused for a moment as he communicated with his
dragon. "Loseth is getting in touch. How is K'sedel?" With the
Weyrleader out with an injury, he wondered how River Bluff was coping.
Normally K'reyel would stand in as his father's 'Second, but now the
bronzerider was Weyrleader at Dragonsfall.
"Not great," she shook her head. "They caught a green on a wing and
it's strained. K'sedel got concussed and broke his wrist. Of course
you know what that's like."
He grimaced in sympathy. "Yeah. Hope he heals up soon." He opened the
box, eyebrows going up. "Oh, this is nice." He lifted the knife and
tilted it, admiring the handle.
"I thought you might like that," she smiled at his obvious pleasure.
Then the humming picked up and she took his arm. "We need to get out
there."
N'vanik escorted her down to the Stands. The weyrfolk and guests were
rapidly filling the seats, the humming of the dragons rising to drown
out the chatter of the crowd. Weyrleader and Weyrwoman took the place
of honor and N'vanik looked down to admire the eggs. Soon a long line
of white-robed Candidates entered with a mixture of excitement and
nervousness.
Cyradis' eyes scanned the visiting dignitary box for a familiar face
and then she saw him staring back at her at her. She leaned toward
N'vanik. "N'lon's here. Probably because Ranar is Standing." Her
attention shifted to the line of candidates and two of her favorites
both her son and K'deren's daughter were Standing today.
"Well I'm glad. For Ranar's sake." From what Cyradis said, things
between father and son were a bit strained.
"I don't think Ranar's seen him," she said as the Candidates filed in.
Though that could have just been him ignoring his father. She blew out
a breath nervous for her son and then gave N'vanik a rather shaky
smile. "I hope he does well. Here we go," she said as the humming rose
and the eggs began to crack.
A small snout emerged from one egg and then the shell split, revealing
a bronze. On shaky legs he wobbled toward a group of Candidates. The
dragonet's strides became more confident and he went directly up to
Ranar. The crowd burst into cheers as the first Impression was made.
N'vanik gripped Cyradis's arm. "He did it!"
"He did," her hands flew to her mouth and she jumped to her feet.
"Iorath, he is certainly going to be a handsome bronze." She couldn't
help it and her eyes slid sideways to see N'lon's mouth hanging open.
So much for his opinion of their son. She bit her lip heart full to
bursting for her boy.
Another egg cracked and then another. A brown and a pair of Blues.
Then three eggs cracked at once and almost identical greens came
bawling into the ranks of the candidates.
One rushed forward eagerly, running into a boy and sending him
sprawling. N'vanik tensed, wondering if the kid had been hurt. But the
boy sat up as the hatchling crooned in distress and a moment later
Impression was made.
Amid the cheers of the crowd, N'vanik heard a sharp cry of, "No!" A
male relative, he guessed, probably the boy's father. Disappointed
he'd Impressed green no doubt. N'vanik was going to make sure to check
on the weyrling later.
}:She is Tsogath,:{ Loseth supplied, feeling his rider's attention on the pair.
The joy of this hatching was simply amplified by her son's impression
but after watching him escort his stumbling little bronze from the
sands and into the care of the waiting Weyrling workers she turned her
attention back to K'deren's daughter.
The girl seemed listless on the sands and no wonder. Her grandfather
had been recently injured and her da had gone to Riverbluff to check
on his father. She looked toward the entrance but didn't see K'deren
anywhere. Cyradis shook her head. "Come on sweetie," she breathed. "Let
them know how much you love them." But she just turned away from the
hatchlings and looked up into the stands.
Cyradis eyes crinkled as a tiny green bumped into the back of her
legs, and it happened.
}:My daughter is Sarahth,:{ Panitath supplied.
And then Cyradis heard a whoop of joy from the entrance and turned her
head to see K'deren grinning and applauding. "Oh I'm so glad he got
here."
"Just in time." N'vanik saw the pride in K'deren's face even from this
far away. "Your kids will be weyrlings together. That's great." Then
he laughed. "If you two were more high-strung as parents, I'd worry
for Sh'del's sanity."
Most of the eggs had hatched and the group of Candidates had thinned.
N'vanik spotted one of Tal's fellow weavers, Doria. Tal had mentioned
the girl was uncertain about Standing and Doria certainly seemed
unsure now, hanging farther back from the others.
A creel of distress drew his attention to a little green. She wandered
back and forth, searching. N'vanik's stomach tightened, worried that
the hatchling wouldn't be able to find a lifemate. A few girls and one
boy tried to come close, but the green dodged away from them.
Oh no.
But then the green seemed to find her direction. With a happy trill,
she headed in a straight line and plopped down right in front of
Doria.
"Thank Faranth." N'vanik sighed.
"Oh my," Cyradis said at almost the same moment. "Well this one's been
exciting," she grinned at N'vanik. "I think we need to go greet Naceth
and Doria and all the other new pairs."
