Relea

Relea

She hadn't said anything at first, not because she hadn't wanted Coran to
know, but because Relea wanted to be certain. It wasn't until she was a
good two weeks late that Relea allowed her suspicion to become
confirmation. Nausea, too, had reared its head in the last couple of days,
a fact which she had barely managed to keep from Coran. As he arrived home
from the infirmary that night, however, she realised it was time to
actually say something.

"Would you examine me?" She requested almost as soon as he was through the
door. Although she could have gone to the infirmary and requested another
healer, Relea was far more comfortable with her husband.

Coran froze in the doorway, his leather satchel in hand, his blue eyes
regarding Relea, first her face, and then her hands, which were asking him
to examine her. Brow furrowing, he finally closed the door behind him.

"Why? Are you not feeling well?" he asked as he came across the room.

"No, I'm not, and I'm two weeks late." Relea explained. She was pretty
sure she wouldn't have to say anything else. While Relea had been late
before, the only time she'd gone quite _that_ long had been the last time
she had been pregnant.

Coran wasn't sure how to react to that. The memories of her miscarriage
were still vivid enough to leave him hesitant about another pregnancy.
"Come on, you know what to do." He said, taking her hand and leading her to
the bedroom.

She did, and Relea followed without hesitation. As he washed clean, she
removed her underwear, then sat upon the edge of the bed. Only when he had
finished did she lie back down and allow him to do an internal
examination. The sensation wasn't the most pleasant, but somehow he was
able to tell if she was pregnant, so she didn't argue.

The healer was careful and thorough with his examination, and he sighed a
little when he was finished. He washed his hands in the basin before
signing, "It's still really early, but everything seems to be saying that
you are pregnant."

Relea had put herself together while he washed, then studied his face
before signing. "You don't look happy."

"I am worried." He signed back. She already knew that he'd lost his first
wife to childbirth, and now here he was with a second wife who'd had a
miscarriage. What if her body was trying to tell her that it shouldn't
have babies? "Specifically I am worried about you."

"I don't want you to worry." Relea managed a slight smile and drew closer
to her husband before signing again. "But I would like to bear you
children."

Coran reached out and rubbed his hands down Relea's arms before saying to
her, "And I want you to be the mother of my children, I just don't want to
lose you." He had been through that loss once and he did not think he could
recover from such a thing again.

Although Relea wanted to promise that he wouldn't, she couldn't. The idea
of dying scared her, but she also knew that life wasn't guaranteed. "It's
a bit late now." She smiled again, the expression gentle. "All we can do
is hope for the best."

Pressing a kiss to Relea's forehead, Coran tenderly stroked a strand of her
hair away from her face and tucked it behind her ear, "Let's keep this just
between us until you are farther along." He didn't want to get his parents
hopes up for another grandchild until Relea was out of the typical range
where miscarriages could happen.

Relea nodded in agreement, figuring the reason behind it. She smiled a
little and eased into his embrace, holding on to him tightly. This was a
second chance for a child, and she was going to do whatever she could to
ensure her baby's health.
