She surfaced slowly and didn't quite remember where she was right
away. But she felt Panitath's self satisfied fulfillment and knew it
had been a good flight. She turned her head slightly to look over her
shoulder and sagged with relief. **N'vanik.** She relaxed and leaned
into his embrace. It had worked.
A warm, small, soft form curled against him. "Panitath has good
taste," N'vanik murmured.
"It was a very good flight," she said softly. "I'm very glad Loseth won."
"Me, too." He shifted and ran a hand through her tangled hair. "I've
gotten used to being in charge."
She chuckled and turned in his arms to tuck her head under his chin.
This time, this flight had been comfortable and just what she'd
wanted. She'd thank Panitath later but she could only imagine the
imperious sniff from her lifemate when she was told that Loseth had
simply been the best choice.
"I can't imagine anyone better in the position," she murmured.
"Ooh, flattery." His hand slid lower, running up and down her back.
Though he hadn't been too worried, it was still a relief to know he'd
remained Weyrleader.
She couldn't help the grin into his neck. "Yes, well you did say I was
beautiful... so..." She left the 'turn about's fair play' unsaid. Or
was that Loseth telling Panitath? She found it didn't really matter,
not this time.
"I never thought I'd be a good Weyrleader. Never thought I'd _be_
Weyrleader." Every bronzerider knew it was possible in theory, but he
hadn't considered it more than that. Not until Traelyn threw her
Flight open, and even then he had considered his chances slim-to-none.
She tilted her head back slightly so she could look up into his eyes.
He'd never show vulnerability to her before. He'd always been strong
and decisive, sometimes abrasively so. "But you are," she said softly.
"And you're a very good one, which is why I didn't want to lose you."
He gave her a warm smile. "I don't want to lose you either." Senior
Weyrwomen leaving was typically a rare occurrence but with the Pass it
seemed things were constantly being shaken up. "You're stable and
sensible. And I really appreciate you supporting me with J'ackt. He .
. . doesn't make anything easy."
"Thanks," she smiled as he went on. "No he doesn't," she agreed about
J'ackt. She didn't chuckle but you could hear the smile in her voice.
"At least he's learning that his actions have consequences he can't
just run away from. There is so much he never had a chance to learn."
"And lucky him, he gets to learn it all at once." N'vanik wished he
could make things easier for him but it was a Pass. It was critical
that J'ackt become a functional, competent dragonrider as soon as
possible.
"Right," she said with a sigh. "It would just be so much easier if he
didn't fight it every step of the way."
"He'll get there." N'vanik's fingers skimmed along her arm. "I was
like that and I got better." Dragonlust heated his blood as he looked
at her with appreciation. Cyradis was a beautiful woman, a good
partner. Even a friend.
"Yes you did," she smiled and then sighed. "But enough about him.
We're going to have to talk about D'hol but that isn't what I want
right now."
"We can talk later." He leaned in to claim her lips.
And she agreed wholeheartedly.
