N'vanik

It was hard to believe that Dheymin was nearly four months old, and
every time Jeyme retrieved him from his foster mother's she swore he'd
gotten bigger. It still pained her to think that she would probably
miss his first laugh, his first footsteps, and his first words-- this
was the hardest pill to swallow since becoming a dragonrider.

}:The Weyrleader wishes to visit the hatchling.:{ Quinneth dutifully
informed Jeyme, although it hadn't taken much convincing once the
handsome Loseth had asked her to relay the message.

Jeyme chewed on her bottom lip anxiously as she considered the
request. There was no doubt in her mind how D'hol felt about N'vanik,
and those feelings were always heightened after Panitath's flights. A
part of her wanted to say 'no' just to make sure that she kept the
peace with D'hol, but at the same time.... **We talked about this back
when Dheymin was born, that N'vanik would sometimes want to see him.**

**Tell him to come on over.**

N'vanik arrived with a smile, which widened when he realized D'hol
wasn't home. "Hey there." He held up a rattle. "I'm sure the
fostermother has plenty but..." He shrugged.

"Come on in." Jeyme motioned for the Weyrleader from where she stood
by the play pen where Dheymin lay, carefully exploring his feet, which
he had only just found with his chubby hands a few days before.

N'vanik came over and offered the rattle to the little boy. "They do
grow fast, don't they? He'll be crawling around soon." **My son or
not?**

Jeyme beamed down at Dheymin as he wrapped chubby fingers around the
rattle N'vanik offered, "Yes, I can't believe how much he has changed
already. He seems different every time I get him back from his foster
mother."

"It's like that with Nisha, too." N'vanik smiled as the boy accepted
the gift. For all the tension D'hol was determined to hold onto, at
least Jeyme seemed to be easy-going about the situation.

"Are things easier for you with Rhosyn than they are with D'hol?" she
asked curiously.

N'vanik sighed. "She ignores me, so yeah." He wished things were
different but at least Rhosyn wasn't hostile and she'd never tried to
deny him access to their daughter.

"Well, if it's any consolation, he probably wouldn't hate you _so_
much if, you know, his unrequited love hadn't chosen you for
Weyrleader." A teasing gleam lit her eyes, "And then you might
possibly be the father of his son."

"Just bad luck." N'vanik shook his head. "How are you doing? Is he
treating you well?" If D'hol ever hurt Jeyme, the Weyrleader would
make him suffer.

The question made Jeyme chuckle, "It is strange how many people ask me
that. He treats me very well, N'vanik, I promise, or I wouldn't stick
around. I get to see a side of D'hol that no one else does." She
thought of the sweet way he had cared for her during her pregnancy,
giving her back rubs and retrieving sweets for her when she craved
them.

N'vanik arched an eyebrow. "Well, I'll take your word on that." He
looked back down at Dheymin. "Is it getting easier, leaving him with
the fostermother?"

Jeyme sighed a little, her eyes going back to Dheymin, "Only a
little." Sometimes it made her wish she wasn't a dragonrider, so she
could keep Dheymin with her like a real mother, but then she only had
to reach out to Quinneth and know that she would never trade her
dragon, for anything.

"Thanks for coming by, N'vanik, even if things with D'hol are a bit...
strained." She lifted her hand and placed it on his bicep as she
smiled up at him kindly.

"I _want_ to visit. Thanks for letting me." N'vanik put his other arm
around her in a half hug.

The sound of a throat clearing was voluble as D'hol closed the door
behind him. Hazel eyes were flinty as he took in the scene and the
muscles along his jawline twitched rapidly. He said nothing as he
looked between the pair, his eyes flicking down to his son and back up
to where N'vanik and Jeyme touched. Again, surprisingly, he said
nothing, coming into the weyr and going immediately for the wardrobe.
Pulling out a clean shirt and trousers, he turned on his heel and
strode back towards the door. "Let me know when you're done." His
voice was cool and calm, betraying nothing of his thoughts.

Even as well as she knew D'hol by this point, Jeyme wasn't sure what
to make of his behavior as he quietly moved about the weyr. Seeing how
he had only recently lost Panitath's mating flight, again, and most
likely because of Cyradis and N'vanik's actions prior to the flight,
Jeyme was surprised that there were no fiery explosions from her
temperamental weyrmate. Her hand dropped from N'vanik's arm.

Quietly, N'vanik said, "It's fine if he doesn't trust me. But if he
doesn't trust _you_, that's a serious problem." He hadn't missed the
cold look on D'hol's face. "And you're allowed to be nice to people,
even people he doesn't like."

"Yes, it's certainly suppose to be okay for him to pine after Cyradis
isn't it?" Jeyme blurted out, almost bitterly. It was the first time
she'd ever said the words to anyone, beyond letters to Arippa. She
shook her head and exhaled slowly, "Pretend you didn't hear that. I'll
talk to him when he gets back. It will be fine."

N'vanik liked seeing that bit of feistiness from her and it gave him
hope that she wasn't going to let herself be D'hol's doormat. He
reached down to rub the baby's belly. "We should get him and Nisha
together sometime when they're a little older. Family picnic maybe?"

Jeyme smiled at the thought of the two children someday playing
together, "I would like that."
