Lenala

There was no sun shining to Vilarth's hide. The shine on the slumbering
gold came within. Vilarth stirred restlessly. There was tension in the air.
The whole Weyr seemed to hold breath and wait her to wake up. Especially
the bronzes. Zackariath's eyes were aimed at her and he couldn't care less
what his rider was saying to him, or what the weyrling-dragons were doing.

Lenala came from dining cavern, took a one look of her lifemate and hurried
to call in to Rhosyn's weyr. "Rhosyn, Vilarth's going to Rise as soon as
she wakes up! Take Orlaith away!"

She had barely gotten the words out of her mouth when it happened. Vilarth
opened her eye lids, facets swirling in purples and reds. "Oh, no, you're not
leaving me here. I'm so not walking to the feeding pens," Lenala almost snarled
and ran to Vilarth's ledge.

}: Then hurry, I'm starving :{ A shudder seemed to go through the gold's body.
Lenala had no time to straps, she just had to trust Vilarth not to throw
her off from her back.

"I'm thinking we should be drilling the weyrlings on recognition -"

A bugle outside cut A'kades off. }:Vilarth has been spending time with us.
She will be _mine_,:{ his dragon informed him, a surge of possessiveness
rushing through.

A'kades shivered, breaking off mid-sentence. He opened his mouth to
apologize, but distraction was on several other faces at the same time.
The bronzeriders were all experienced enough that they knew what was
happening. Their dragons' need was on the Rising gold dragon - the making
of new dragonets, not the care of the current ones.

Aughashyth grabbed a large buck and blooded it without taking his eyes
off the glowing gold. His need was primal and his determination firm.
Y'gel trotted toward the beast pens from the direction of the dragon
infirmary.

Menanth joined the other bronzes, snatching an animal from the
panicking herd and sinking his jaws in. Vilarth had been his mate once
and she would be again. D'ren took deep breaths as he made his way
outside. He didn't know if he would ever get used to the intensity of
gold flights. It had gotten worse now that he knew what winning was
like.

Zack's attention was aimed to the gold and only to her. Vilarth
hoovered over the feeding pens, selected her target and struck.

**Blood only!** Lenala reminded her when Vilarth snapped the beast's neck.

The gold snarled and looked her rider, eyes swirling red. She wanted
to tear the beast, devour it's flesh.

"No! Blood only!" Lenala wrestled with the gold's will. She was
determined to win. Never again she would let Vilarth get out of her
control. She used every ounce of her will to subjugate Vilarth. Her
face was covered with film of moisture and her hair was wet when
Vilarth finally relented and bit the throat, the reach the hot blood
from the artery. Or maybe it was just rain.

"Good job, Lenala," U'das patted her shoulder. He had seen her lost it
once. Lenala wrenched her shoulder away. She didn't want to be
touched, not yet. Not until Vilarth was caught. She snarled, echoing
her dragon.

A'kades thought Lenala was beautiful as she stood in the circle of men
who were forming. She was a vision of beauty with her rich dark hair,
her eyes snapping with fire. Her tanned skin with glistening drops
overlaid in his mind with Vilarth's shimmering golden form, his eyes
on her as his bronze's was on the gold. He felt his dragon blooding a
wherry and the primitive desire to fly, to win, to take overwhelming
him.

**She will be ours,:{ was the joint thought.

Vilarth discarded the first carcass and moved to drain the blood from
next one. Two herdbeasts later she was ready. She spread her wings and
jumped to the air. She let defiant call for her suitors. }: You can't
catch me! :{

Zack didn't hesitate to follow her. There was time when his smaller
size but greater speed served him, like now. He was first bronze in
the air and got a nice lead.

Menanth streaked after Vilarth, a few wingbeats behind Zackariath. }:
We made a fine Clutch before, Vilarth. Choose me again, lovely
Queen.:{

Aughasyth wasn't the fastest off the mark but he was big and strong
and in his prime. He knew this gold would be very hard to catch but he
was ready for a long and high flight. The threw his own croon of
appreciation for the beautiful gold. }:Beautiful Vilarth you are
glorious.:{

Vilarth choose to fly along the coastline, towards Sunstone Seahold.
Steady breeze gave her speed and altitude. She rose high and then
suddenly dove down. Teasing her chasers, she started to weave from
left to right, up and down.

On the ground, Lenala was completely one with her dragon. She swayed
on her feet, mimicking Vilarth's aerial dance.

}:I will show you glory in the sky!:{ called Volaith. The big bronze
was easily keeping pace with the gold, and he followed above her,
knowing she wouldn't be caught so low. He tilted so that the sun
glittered on his hide and turned it burnished, hoping his handsomeness
would appeal as well as his words.

On the ground A'kades dared to step closer to her, reaching his hand
out towards the goldrider he'd been spending time with in a possessive
move.

Vilarth flew over a small seahold and fleet of fishing ships so low
that her belly brushed the tips of the ships' masts. She gave no
thoughts for the people below whose life she just probably disturbed.
This was all about her and her need. Right now her need was to choose
her mate. Who would it be this time? Zackariath was wise and had led
the Weyr before, but he was getting old. Aughashyth was certainly big,
strong and handsome. Vilarth suddenly turned around and started to
spiral up and up. The time was nearing. The first drop outs were
already heading back home.

She flew teasingly close to Menanth and then twisted away before he
could catch her. He was young and virile and had given her fine
clutches before. But it was not him this time. No, there was another
bronze who had caught her attention. One she had been spend time with
lately. More mature and experienced than Menanth or Seneth, a strong
one who could fly far and high with her. She called her: }: Come
Volaith, prove yourself to me!:{ She put all her strength to the final
push for speed, to reach the right altitude for good copulation.

The hulking bronze growled with satisfaction as the lovely gold called
_his_ name. He swung towards her as she climbed, spreading his wings
and reaching his talons towards her to catch her. His neck and tail
twined with hers and they started the descent.

On the ground A'kades took the last step and pulled Lenala towards
him, crushing his mouth against hers in a display of aggression and
possessiveness. She was his as her queen was his bronze's. The
presence of the others in the flight area fell away in his mind as he
staggered towards the flight cots, ready to claim the prize.

Aughashyth rumbled his disappointment. Ever hopeful, he'd come closer
this time than in the past. Vilarth had actually considered him for a
moment and that was a victory.

Y'gel turned away and brushed off reaching hands. He knew his weyrmate
would know all about the flight and be waiting for him. Briata's arms
were what he needed.

Zack was bitterly disappointed when he headed back to his ledge. U'das wasn't disappointed at all. He just picked out a willing flight moth.

F'lin watched as the goldrider slipped away, a mix of disappointment and lust making his vision blur as Seneth cried out in frustration.

Lenala went willingly with A'kades. There were times when dragon's and rider's preferences were the same.
