Description: K'lvin gets a gift for his birthingday
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 13, day 25 of Turn 7
Bahji listened as K'lvin poured a cup of morning klah, rubbing her
abdomen where it was beginning to round out further and smiled. So far
everything had gone well. She had been extremely careful about her
movements and her diet and the pregnancy was progressing excellently
according to the Healers. It didn't take away all of the risk, but
there was considerably less worry in K'lvin's voice lately. There was
a quiet around him this morning and she thought she knew the reason
why.
He may not have told her, but she was able to find out on her own. It
was his birthingday. She idly wondered if the fact that he was another
Turn older bothered him, especially due to their age difference.
Perhaps she should stop teasing him about it. She paused. No, he
usually took it with humor and it had become a bit of a joke between
them. But she had taken the effort to get him something special. She
sat up slowly, a bit more cumbersome than she had been. "K'lvin?"
The Wingleader turned at the sound of his weyrmate's voice. Her sleep
tousled hair and the addition of her nicely rounded belly made him
smile. "Good morning darlin'." He leaned in and pressed a kiss to her
forehead.
She smiled at the warm kiss. "Good morning." She turned her head
upwards to swipe a kiss at his jawline. "Happy Birthingday, K'lvin."
"Mmhm, yes, another Turn." There was the hint of a smile in his voice-
despite the fact that it _had_ been on his mind that another Turn of
age was another Turn added to the already large age-gap between him
and Bahji. Not that it seemed to matter right now, but K'lvin had the
nasty habit of looking into the future and worrying that he wouldn't
be around for Bahji or for their child.
"I have something for you." She sat up completely, her legs kicking
out as she got her balance. She half turned towards the cabinet and
gestured to it. "In there is a little box. It's wrapped up." Her eyes
warmed in anticipation. "I hope you like it." She had completed five
finely textured blankets for what was in that box, she only hoped that
he liked it. The metal work of the bronze bracelet was done by a
younger journeyman, but it was all she could manage to afford to get
with her trade. Still, it felt pretty and she liked the knotwork on
the design.
K'lvin retrieved the box from the cabinet that Bahji had indicated, a
smile on his face as he returned to the bed and sat down on it as he
tore away the brown paper that had been wrapped carefully over the
package. It warmed the bronzerider's heart to think of Bahji's
talented fingers expertly folding the paper over the box. K'lvin
couldn't have made the package look nearly as good and he had his
sight!
"Bahji," he spoke her name as he fingered the nicely crafted bronze
bracelet. It had a burnished, masculine look that would not be
mistaken for some of the frippery that blue and greenrider's wore.
While K'lvin would never have bought a bracelet for himself, the idea
of wearing something that was a reminder of Bahji made him smile.
"Thank you, love." He clasped it around his wrist and then reached out
and put Bahji's hand on his arm so she could feel that he was wearing
it.
Bahji's hand was light on the bracelet as she turned her face towards
him. "Do you like it? I mean really like it? I was told that the color
would match your knots. "
K'lvin glanced from his shoulder to his wrist. The colors weren't
necessarily the same shade, or even really in the same color family,
but the Wingleader would never have told Bahji that. Making her feel
bad over the thoughtful gift was something K'lvin wanted to avoid at
all costs. "It does. I really like it, Bahji, honest. What made you
think of it?" He asked, reached up and stroking some of her hair back
away from her face.
She smiled, pleased that she had gotten something he liked. "I thought
I would get you something to remind you of me during Fall. I couldn't
weave you anything, really, because I'm sure Thread doesn't do well
with wool, plus it can get hot in the summers, so I thought I should
get something simple. I didn't think you'd like a necklace and you
already have everything you need for leather and all."
"It's perfect." He assured her, catching her chin in his calloused
hand before pressing a kiss to her lips. "Unfortunately, Wingleaders
have to work, even on their birthingdays. I will see you later for
dinner?"
She beamed brightly and nodded. "Yes, of course. Don't work to hard.
And I love you."
K'lvin reached up to rub a tendril of her silky hair between his
fingers, "And I love you too." Pressing one last kiss to Bahji's lips,
the Wingleader pushed up from the bed and grabbed the cup of klah he
had poured earlier. As he passed by the firelizard's perch on his way
out of the weyr, K'lvin tapped Burst on the head and said, "You're in
charge while I'm away."
The little bronze puffed up his chest and gave a soft chirrup of
agreement. He took a moment to preen with self-confidence before
winging his way to land on Bahji's shoulder, his head held high. Bahji
giggled at the proud feelings that the bronze was emanating. "He takes
that very seriously. I'll see you this afternoon for dinner."
"Good," he chuckled, "later, darling." Slipping through the portal,
K'lvin walked to his office, the unfamiliar weight of the bracelet on
his wrist making him smile.
