Annileri watched with proud eyes as her granddaughter stood with the
lovely little gold. To think, her granddaughter, a goldrider! She had
always known that her dreamy grandchild was special, but never in her
wildest dreams had she dreamed that her granddaughter would be a
goldrider. Her face was wreathed with a wide smile as she watched.
Beside her, her husband Yendon was busy speaking to another parent,
his chest thrust out in a manner that would have been comical had it
not been so deserved.

Her eyes swung to a couple that was approaching and she lightly tugged
on Yendon's arm to catch his attention. He turned to her and met her
gaze with a questioning one. "We've visitors, Yen. Pay attention."

"Congratulations," Cyradis said as she and N'vanik walked up to
Lanniya's grandparents. "You must be so proud." In her opinion they
had every right to be.

"I'm N'vanik and this is Cyradis. We're from Dolphin Cove." He didn't
want to fuss with titles and they'd be able to see the knots anyway.

"We are very proud." Yendon's voice ringed with the emotion as Annileri
beamed. "We never thought to have a granddaughter as a rider, not to mention
a gold rider." He slipped his arm around his wife. "There is not enough
words to say how proud we are of her."

"I think she'll be a credit to River Bluff," N'vanik said, playing the
social game. Although it wasn't really a chore to talk to the happy
family members of new riders.

Cyradis smiled at the proud traders. She saw something in the
grandmother that again reminded her of Pierka one of her younger
greenriders and about the age to be an older sibling or cousin of the
young goldrider. She knew Pierka had no memory of her past life but
didn't want to give out false hope if these people were not related to
her. So she decided to gently probe. "Is she your only family?"

Annileri nodded. "She is." She looked over Cyradis' shoulder to peer
at Lanniya with sad affection. "We lost her parents and sister a few
Turns ago. It was hard on her, but she's a resilient girl, our
Lanniya. Still keeps a smile on her face." She looked up at Yendon and
hugged his side. "I guess she turned out better than we thought she
would."

"Sister? " Her hand tightened in N'vanik's. If what she suspected were
true... how could she raise their hopes only to dash them again if it
were not true. "Oh my, that's hard," she shook her head. "How did you
lose them?"

N'vanik finally got a glimmer of what Cyradis was hinting at and
straightened a little, waiting for the answer.

Annileri cleared her throat, feeling it close up at the thought and
looked down. Yendon quickly took over, relieving his wife from
speaking of the tragedy. "Lanniya's father was a Seacrafter. My
daughter and Pierkanya, Lanniya's sister, went with him to scout new
trades for us." His face pinched and grieved. "They were lost at sea.
A storm, from what I understand." He took a breath and tightened his
arm around Annileri. "Lanniya hadn't gone because she was ill and was
with us, else we would have lost her too."

"Oh that is hard," she breathed. Then she squeezed N'vanik's hand
again. "I'd like to tell you about a young woman at Dolphin Cove," she
said. "Do you have a moment?"

"We have a rider named Pierka," N'vanik said. "Maybe there's some
relation. Dolphineers rescued her after a storm." This would have to
be quite a coincidence if there was no connection.

Cyradis smiled and nodded up at her tall Weyrleader. "Yes, and she
bears a striking resemblance to your granddaughter but with blond
hair. But she has no memory of her life before that storm."

Yendon and Annileri stared at them with similar expressions mixed of
shock, uncertainty and burgeoning hope. "She...You have a Pierka?"
Annileri rushed forward, keeping her voice low. "Our Pierkanya, she
was blonde and had bright blue eyes. She'd be seventeen now, but about
to become eighteen. She was short like me." She grabbed both of their
hands, her eyes brimming. "Is your Pierka like that?"

"That sounds like her." N'vanik wished they were riders so he could...
ah. "We could have our dragons send images of her to Anaeryth, and the
gold could show Lanniya."

Yendon spoke up before Annileri could. "No." He shook his head. "Today
is Lanniya's special day and if we gave her sudden hope and we were
wrong, she'd be heartbroken. She and her sister were very close. And
even _if_ it is our Pierkanya, to find out that her sister doesn't
remember her would be difficult." He glanced over at his granddaughter
who was animatedly talking to another weyrling and his eyes softened.
He looked back down at his wife, who clutched at her own hands, her
own hope bright on her face, but tears welling in her eyes before his
own eyes misted and he cleared his throat. "Can we...can we meet this
girl? I'd like to see her." Annileri looked up at him and he corrected
himself. "We would both like to."

"Then how about we arrange for you both to visit Dolphin Cove soon. We
can send a rider for you and you can come for a visit meet our
Pierka." Cyradis smiled at the two of them thinking how much like
Annileri she was around the eyes. "You should also know, she has a
baby. I'm sure you'd want to meet him as well." That would also give
them a chance to prepare the greenrider and let her adjust to the idea
that they might have found her family. "Then you can decide with the
Weyrlingmaster when is good to tell Lanniya."

"A baby?" Even more joy filled the older woman's eyes and she clasped
her hands to her chest. "Oh yes." She breathed. "We never dared
hope...yes. Please. We would both love that." She reached and clasped
Cyradis' hand, then N'vanik's, her voice breaking. "Thank you. Thank
you both."
