The Hatching hadn't exactly been her finest moment but at least it had
given her the chance to see someone she hadn't spoken to for a long while.
And it had made her realize that she had things to work on.
Pulling on the straps to make sure everything was tight, Rhosyn mounted
up and decided to break another streak and head over to Dolphin Cove.
~Start flashback~
It had been hard being surrounded by so many like her and yet unlike
her. Saibra had been smiling. It was clear despite her move to Dragonsfall
that she and her Weyrleader were getting along. Teseada had eggs to look
forward to. Kapera had seemed in good spirits. Cyradis with her new baby
and weyrmate was just too much. She was clearly the mother Rhosyn was
not. **Here I am, at my Hatching. The gold Impressed and I am absolutely
miserable. All I want to do is hide in my weyr.** When the conversation came
to a lull, she thanked the rest for coming and turned to head off in another
direction. The first dark corner Rhosyn came to she disappeared into and
started to breathe.
}:Mine, why are you so upset? It is a good day for my children.:{
Orlaith had been feeding but now she was sensing her rider's emotions.
**It is. They Hatched wonderfully. I..** She didn't need to say it,
thankfully. Orlaith knew her mind and her thoughts and she saw the
face that came to mind.
}:Loseth's? He upset you again? He needs to stop doing that:{
Before her dragon could send an admonishment to N'vanik's bronze,
Rhosyn begged her not to. **I just need to deal with it. I think after
tonight when I have time to rest, it'll be better. There's just too
many people.**
}:Rest is good. You need to take care of you.:{ Orlaith's tone was
suspicious and it was clear she was still paying attention to her rider.
"So," Cyradis started softly as she followed Rhosyn. "What's going on?"
Turning swiftly, she was glad to see a face she knew and one that
wasn't exactly unwelcome. Still it was awkward to talk to someone
about their Weyrleader, especially in such a way. And she didn't want
to pull Cyradis into it-she really didn't. "Just saw someone I haven't
seen in a while. Went better than I had planned but...not great."
Cyradis figured she knew who Rhosyn was talking about but didn't want
to butt in where she wasn't wanted. She knew N'vanik fairly well by
this time and she knew he could be quite terrible when he chose to.
"Is there anything I can do?"
Her hazel eyes clouded over for a moment and it was clear she was
holding herself together through sheer force of will. There were
cracks in the dam, though. "All these people...and I just want to go
hide somewhere in the dark until I don't feel so ugly. This was
supposed to be a good day-a great day-my party, my hatching, my best
and I don't want anyone here." She took a breath and tried to steady
herself. "All it took was a few words and I was pieces all over the
floor."
Cyradis closed her eyes for just a moment. "I'm sorry," she said. "You
should have a wonderful day. Orlaith's gold daughter hatched today and
selected a lovely lifemate. It should be a great day." She if anyone
knew her Weyrleader could be difficult but for her it was different
than it was for the River Bluff Weyrwoman. Once again she was very
thankful for K'deren.
She reached out to Rhosyn. Do you want me to take him home so you can
enjoy the rest of your hatching?"
Rhosyn shook her head. Like it or not, the damage was already done.
And N'vanik probably wouldn't think well of her if she banished him
from her Hatching. He'd call her selfish again. Thinking about something
Reeva said, she realized that she needed to work better at controlling her
emotions. This was unacceptable. In a few days she would be flying again
and up there she couldn't be distracted. **Think of it as your Threadfall.
You've got to last the entire Fall.** Focusing on her breathing, she was
quiet and closed her eyes for a bit. When she was ready, she opened them and
nodded to Cyradis. "To the Red Star with that nonsense. This is my
Hatching-my gold egg-my people and I'm not going to spend the rest of
it in some corner. Cyradis...did you happen to bring any of that citron
stuff?"
"I didn't," she said, "But I could have some here in a few minutes."
It wasn't like she'd have to search far. Panitath could send someone
to deliver the drink at a simple word from her rider. "You should
enjoy this gathering to the fullest. Don't let anyone bring you down
dear." Cyradis put a hand on Rhosyn's shoulder.
"How bout...you walk with me for a bit? And...some lemon stuff would be
nice." Safety in numbers-that was a good plan. Rhosyn could keep herself in
check if she had someone to grab onto. And maybe with a bit of a drink, she
could loosen up enough to forget for awhile. And if she didn't remember
later, so much the better.
Cyradis told Panitath to send someone with a bottle from her private
store. She could only hope K'deren could break free but she doubted
it. As they walked and chatted she kept people at arms' length with her
'steely stare' that said 'don't mess with me.' Soon a young bluerider
came running up to her with the appropriate bottle.
"Brownrider K'deren said you wanted this ma'am," he said as he handed
it to her.
"Yes, thank you N'dran," she smiled. "Why don't you enjoy the feast a
bit before you return?" She turned back to Rhosyn with a smile. "There
you go," she said and handed the River Bluff Weyrwoman her Citroncello.
Taking it gingerly, Rhosyn took a few sips first, savoring the taste of the
long-missed beverage. In staying away from Dolphin Cove to avoid N'vanik,
she'd also avoided this nice thing and Cyradis. A shame really. When the
sips didn't quench her need, she took a draught and straightened up, holding
the bottle in hand. "Now that's the stuff. Cyradis, you should sell this
stuff to the holders. You could make plenty. Or maybe...oh that's right! I have
vintners. And they make things. They could make this!" She'd almost forgotten her
Weyr's young vintnering operation and the things they had produced what with her
recent pregnancy.
Cyradis shrugged. "I don't need it, though I'd thought of giving the
recipe to the Vintner Hall. I don't know if my grandfather's recipes
made it through the earthquake." She shook her head. So many lives had
been lost and so much knowledge as well.
"You might think about it. But if you want to give it to my vintners to
benefit dragonkind and all, I'll be glad of it." Rhosyn gave a tremulous smile
before taking another swig. "Time to stand closer to the food tables. That might
help things." She wrapped her arms around the other Weyrwoman's and walked
slowly with her.
~~end flashback~~
"Hello stranger," Cyradis smiled coming toward her ledge with a golden
bottle of their favorite thing.
