Description: The Weyr's leadership witness how the newly repaired power
plant is switched on again.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 9, day 15 of Turn 7
Chalayd admitted he enjoyed working in the Weyr. Whatever he needed,
he was provided with it and quickly. It came soon apparent that there
were worn down parts that need to be replaced. Unfortunately, you
couldn't just pull those parts off from a shelf. No, they needed to be
manufactured, by the specs...exactly in accordance with the drawings.
Which he had to make first. Only place with know how to make such
accurate work, was smith hall. When he told that to the Weyrleaders,
he was simply assigned a dragonrider to be at his peck and call. It
took several trips to the hall, since he liked to supervise the
manufacturing process himself. Chalayd didn't sleep much during that
time. Teseada and the Weyr's own techinicians were great help. They
were installing the new parts when they came from the hall.
They got the heating up and working first, early in the morning.
Naturally it took candlemarks before the Weyr warmed up. Then there
was some leaks, because some the pipes were frozen during the black
out and now started to thawn. They had to divert part of the staff to
deal with that and the drudges had some floors to mope up.
Restoring the light took bit longer.
"Okay, we are ready to give it a go now," Chalayd nodded towards the main
switch. When
it was pulled on, light should return to the Weyr and the power plant
would be once again fully functional. If they got everything fixed and
if there weren't any more problems, if someone hadn't mucked it up
again. There had been a hold up when someone had tried to install a
part upside down. Chalayd was bit nervous and excited at the same
time. He was also dirty and tired.
G'nir had brought a bottle of Vintner Hall's finest with him. If the
techinician got it working again, he was going to offer him a toast.
Saibra was bundled up, even though the Weyr had been slowly gaining
heat, the electrical rooms were still cold, and she still had not
completely adjusted to living at a snowy Weyr when she had lived her
entire life at beach Weyrs. The Weyrwoman had a fur-lined hood pulled
up, but her blue eyes were bright specs beneath it, and there was a
smile on her face as she stood beside of G'nir.
The younger goldrider was similarly bundled up, but had a definite dirty
smudge across her face as she approached the Weyrleaders. "I think it's all
working properly now."
Chalayd pulled the switch and slowly, the light bulb above their heads
flickered back to life. You could hear the sound of the power plant.
G'nir actually applauded. "Well done, journeyman."
"We couldn't have managed this without your help," Teseada added.
"It's been a pleasure working here," Chalayd said.
G'nir uncorked the bottle and poured everyone a glass. "I say it's
reason to celebrate."
Chalayd accepted the glass with grateful nodd and suppressed a yawn.
Saibra imagined that there would be many celebrating the return of
power throughout the Weyr- especially the Weyrlings who had been
chopping wood and delivering it to those in need of heat. She
accepted a glass with a smile, raising it in toast to Chalayd and
Teseada's hard work.
Chalayd drained his glass. "Now, ladies, Weyrleader, If you excuse me, but
I'm going to find my bunk and sleep around the clock." He gave the empty
glass back to G'nir and with bow, left.
"Rest well," G'nir said but he was staring the empty glass. What was he, a
waiter?
"He deserves it," Teseada said as she finished her drink. "I think we'd
still be shivering without him, that was well beyond me to fix."
"He certainly does," Saibra agreed with her wingsecond. "I feel so
indebted to him... And you," she put a hand to Teseada's shoulder, "it
is very nice to have capable people nearby."
The younger goldrider blushed a little at the compliment. "I mostly just
passed tools and did what I was told," she said. "Chalayd said he'd write a
report certifying my work though, that I can use towards walking the
tables."
"We might consider hiring him on permanent basis," G'nir suggested.
"Agreed." Saibra said with a smile, her teeth chattering a bit. "Shall
we move our celebrations somewhere warmer? And I am sure that Teseada
would love a chance to rest. It is a wonder you are running at all
with as little sleep as you have gotten."
Teseada managed a laugh, "I have a hungry dragon who thinks she's been
deserted, and I need a bath and then to sleep for the next sevenday."
"There are certainly more confortable places to hold a celebration,"
G'nir agreed.
Saibra grinned, "Then it is settled. I am coming to your weyr to
celebrate." She looped her arm through G'nir's and looked at Teseada,
"Enjoy your bath and sleep, Tes, you deserve it."
