Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 9, day 5 of Turn 7

The days following the birth were such a whirl of activity with a new
baby and little sleep that almost a week went by before Cyradis sat
down for a breather while Kendran slept in a basket on her desk.
**Can you ask Loseth's if he has a few minutes to come by our Weyr**
She got the impression of gold hide sunning on rocks with her mate and
happy interest in the weyrlings in the bowl. }:Does yours have time to
visit mine:{
}:Yes. Should he come now?:{
"Yes," Cyradis answered when the message was relayed to her. "I'd be
pleased to see him now if he's free."
There was hidework N'vanik should be doing, but a visit with Cyradis
was more important. It would be more pleasant, too. In a short time,
he knocked at her door before poking his head in. "Hey, Cyradis."
"N'vanik," she smiled with genuine pleasure to see her Weyrleader.
"It's good to see you. I hope you didn't have to handle all the
dignitaries alone at the hatching."
"Kapera steered me around and made sure I didn't wander off." He went
over to peer down at the baby. "Cute little guy. Impatient, too."
"Good," she smiled. Then she shook her head "Yes well, I'm just lucky
birthing seems to be easier for me than for many women. But I think
I'm done. As much as I can be." she acknowledged she didn't actually
have the final say.
"So I've met with the new Crafting Masters that have come to join us
for the project, and I know I'll be getting stir crazy here pretty
soon. Is there anything going on I should know about?"
He looked at her with a smile. "Should I come by and give you all the
juicy gossip to keep you entertained?"
"Stop with the dimple already," she laughed up at him. "Someone might
think we're friends and then where would be be? All discipline will
break down."
"I thought it was a _good_ thing to have the Weyrleaders getting
along," he teased.
"It certainly is better than the way we started," she teased back.
"Now sit and tell me what happened at the Hatching feast."
N'vanik took a seat. "I went to congratulate the weyrlings first. The
girl that got clawed, the healers say she'll be fine."
"Oh good," Cyradis said with relief. "It was unfortunate positioning.
She didn't see that little bronze coming."
"And how's J'ackt doing?"
A wide grin spread across his face. "He's doing good. I even hugged
him and he didn't punch me."
She laughed and then clapped her hand over her mouth. "Have to
remember not to wake the baby," she said in at a more moderate volume.
"Well at least you have vindication of your opinion regarding the
young man."
"Good thing you were on my side so I can't rub it in your face," he
teased. There were a few people he wanted to do that to.
"Yes," she grinned. "He's very strong willed. I think I knew it would
be brown at the very least." Her voice trailed off as she listened for
Kendran a moment but there was no sound from the cradle. "So we'll
need to talk about the project. We've gotten quite a few crafters into
the Weyr and we'll be ramping up soon."
"Mmm, yes. Lights. And _fans_. I can't wait." It was nice to have the
time and resources for such a project and not just struggle to survive
from one Threadfall to the next. "How are things going?"
"Pretty well I think," she said. "But I'm sure they'll be worse before
they get better. I do hope we have some progress before the summer
comes around."
"Lots of technicians getting in our way." He nodded. "We'll just have
to focus on what we're getting out of it. I had a greenrider transfer
in, 'mated to one of the masters coming here for the job. Forgot his
name. Something with a T?"
"Taine," she smiled. "Yes, he's the Master Mason. I thought we could
have him suggest some more hurricane proofing for the bowl and first
level weyrs. But he'll also be building for the Technicians."
"Hurricane proofing is a great idea. I remember when the Hatching
Grounds flooded." Before he lived at Dolphin Cove. Traelyn had come
with her Queen and all the eggs to stay at Dragonsfall until the water
receded.
"Yes," she nodded, "I read about that in the archives when I first
came here. It must have been very stressful."
"Before my time here, but Dragonsfall offered their Sands. It all
worked out but I wouldn't want Panitath to go through that." Having to
send her barely-hardened eggs /between/ with bronzes, hoping it didn't
harm the dragons growing inside.
"No," she acknowledged. "Neither would I." She got up and walked to
the sideboard. "Would you like a cup of klah," she asked as she poured
one for herself. "Or maybe beer?"
He considered for a moment. "Beer sounds good."
She poured the requested mug and carried them both back to the table.
Beer wasn't her choice but she kept it for times like this and for
K'deren's enjoyment. She sat back down and sipped her klah. "I think
I'd like them to start on the power station and Hurricane proofing.
I'd hate for any progress they make to be wiped away by the first
hurricane of the season."
N'vanik frowned. "That would be awful." He took the mug and thanked
her. "I know you're happy to be up and about again, but I don't want
you working _too_ hard."
"You sound just like K'deren," she mock pouted at him. "I know, I
know," she tried to stave off more scolding. "I'll take it more slowly
but I am so bored sometimes."
"There's always plenty of hidework," he teased.
"But I want to fly," she pursed her lips and shook her head at him
with mock severity. Most of her job seemed to be hidework but she
longed for the skies.
"You'll be back flying soon enough." He nodded toward the baby. "Enjoy
your time with him." He wished he could spend more time with Nisha.
She saw his glance and knew it had to be hard for him to be so far
from his own newborn daughter. "You can visit any time you want to
hold a baby, Uncle N'vanik," she smiled softly at him. "I'm sure he'll
be very familiar with you." He was a good Weyrleader in her book and
she hoped Panitath continued to choose Loseth. She'd seemed to do that
in the past, go for turns with the same mate before she changed her
mind.
"I've been promoted to uncle, huh?" His tone was amused but on the
inside he was stung a little. It made him think of Jeyme's baby and
how determined D'hol was to make the situation difficult. At least
he'd been promised visitation... for now.
"Of course," she smiled. She thought she understood where his thoughts
would turn. Cyradis knew things were rough for parents of both sexes
in a weyr but especially when the paternity was confused by flights.
She'd experienced it first hand and D'hol didn't make things easy for
anyone in his way. Kazom couldn't replace either of the babies to whom
N'vanik would have limited access but he might serve as a surrogate at
some point.
"Nothing against you or the little one, but I'm glad there's no chance
I'm his father." N'vanik smiled and shook his head. "I've had more
than enough drama."
Her eyes went wide and she put the back of her hand to her forehead.
"Drama? Me?"
