Uses:

Edible: Young shoots are eaten as a vegetable, leaves are blanched for soups.

Medicinal Uses:

  • Hop tea is a nerve tonic, mild sedative, muscle relaxant.

Outside Info:

One of the primary ingredients of beer and ale. The essential oil is used in perfumes and lotions. Hops can cause skin allerges. Dried flower bracts can be used in herbal 'pillows' to aid/help induce sleep.

Pharmacology:

  • Oleo-resins containing bitter substances stimulate appetite, gastric secretion and bile flow, thus improving digestion.
  • Humulone & lupulone are antibacterial.
  • Valerianic acid is a sedative.
  • Volatile oils including humulene are sedative, hypnotic, analgesic, antiseptic, carminative and antispasmodic.
