Weyr Rank

Weyrwoman

The Weyrwoman is a Weyr's heart - she tends to her Weyr's mental and physical well-being and cares for the Weyr's population. She leads the Queen's Wing against Threadfall.

A Weyrwoman's duties include:

Crafters

  • Overseeing the transfer in and out of needed Crafters
  • Collaborating with Master Crafters on the oversight of major Craft projects

Lower Caverns

  • Overseeing the Infirmary and the Lower Caverns (via the Headwoman)
  • Mediating disputes between the Lower Caverns population, and occasionally between dragonriders when asked by those involved, their Wingleaders, or the Weyrleader

Record Keeping

  • Keeping an accurate Census of her Weyr
  • Recording any other unusual events that affect the Weyr
  • Keeping a record of weather and other natural events that affect the Weyr
  • Approving transfers in and out of her Weyr, and making sure that personal records follow the transferee
  • Signing off on tithes to the Weyr and maintaining Weyr stores (food, medical supplies, Firestone, etc), as well as signing off on the accounts
  • Recording the births, deaths, injuries, weyr-matings and dissolutions thereof, specialized skills or Crafter training, and retirements of Weyr residents

Candidates and Clutches

  • Caring for her queen and her dragon's Clutch
  • Approving requests to Stand
    • Finding a place for them in the Weyr if they do not Impress
    • Arranging transport home if they decide to leave the Weyr
  • Overseeing the Candidates from the time they are Searched to the time that they have Impressed

Weyrlings and Training

  • Overseeing Weyrling Training, especially in regards to the care of dragons, mating flights, and the psychological training of Wingriders

Rank Appointments

  • Appoints the Weyrwoman's Second, Headwoman, WeyrHarper, and WeyrHealer

Hold-Weyr Relations

  • Diplomatic relations between the Weyr and its beholden Holds
  • Overseeing the territories directly ruled by the Weyr (the old Weyrhold territory and its minor Holdings - not the Major Holds and their territories that are beholden to the Weyr)

Reports to the Weyrwoman

  • Weyrwoman's Second
  • Goldriders
  • Headwoman
  • WeyrCrafters (excluding Weyrdragonhealer)

Weyrwoman's Second

  • Essentially the Weyrwoman's assistant. Learning the position in the event she should need to step in due to illness, injury, or death.
  • The Weyrwoman's Second is there to ease the burden that the Weyrwoman carries. She can be assigned any of the Weyrwoman's duties and is expected to fulfill them with the full cooperation of the Weyr.
  • The Weyrwoman's Second often takes on the mentorship of new/junior goldriders

Headwoman

A Weyr Headwoman's duties are essentially the same as a Hold Headwoman's combined with a Steward's. She will oversee all the day-to-day workings of a Weyr and works very closely with the Weyrwoman. A Headwoman's duties include:

  • Managing tithes to the Weyr, and making sure that tithes are met
  • Managing the Weyr's stores of food, medical supplies, Firestone, furniture, and other necessities
  • Overseeing all Lower Caverns Staff in the kitchens, laundry, and other drudges
  • Overseeing the kitchen Gardens
  • Overseeing the management of livestock in a Weyr with the Beastcrafters to ensure their health and that there is enough to feed both Weyr and dragons
  • Overseeing the care of Candidates and helping ease their transition to Weyrlife, and providing information to the Weyrlingstaff on their abilities and temperament
  • Assigning weyrs to all Weyr inhabitants
  • Managing the Weyr's accounts
  • Keeping the Weyr and its outbuildings clean and in good repair

A Headwoman in a Weyr reports to the Weyrwoman, and is reported to by her own staff and the Weyr's Crafters.

Weyrleader

If the Weyrwoman is a Weyr's heart, then the Weyrleader is its brain. The Weyrleader is responsible for the Weyr's dragonriders and is the tactical leader when it comes to fighting Thread.

The Weyrleader's duties include:

Thread

  • Leading the Weyr against Thread,
  • Utilizing Thread Charts (created by StarSmiths)
  • Weather reports for the Weyr territories, used to plan tactics for Threadfall
  • Coordinating the Wings to effectively fight Thread
  • Coordinating earthbound defenses against Thread (ie. crews with Flamethrowers)

The Wings

  • Nominating Wingleaders
  • Creating Watch Duty schedules
  • Leading his own Wing against Thread
  • Mediating disputes between dragonriders
  • Assigning Sweepride routes and schedules to Wings
  • Understanding infirmary reports to plan for Wing coverage
  • Assigning Sweepride schedules to his own Wing and receiving Sweep reports
  • Approving transfers between Wings to ensure adequate numbers, skills and coverage
  • Managing disputes between the Wingleaders, or disputes Wingriders have with their Wingleaders

Weyrlings and Training

  • Overseeing Weyrling training, especially in regards to drill formations, /betweening/, care of dragons, and the ability to fight Thread

Rank Appointments

  • Appoints the Weyrleader's Second, Weyrlingmaster, and WeyrDragonhealer

Reports to the Weyrleader

  • Weyrleader's Second,
  • Wingleaders
  • Weyrlingmaster
  • WeyrDragonhealer.

Weyrsecond

The Weyrsecond is responsible for supporting the Weyrleader with Flight and Wing responsibilities. He can be assigned any of the Weyrleader's duties and is expected to fulfill them with the full cooperation of the Weyr. He may also act as Weyrleader when the Weyrleader himself is unable due to illness, injury, or any other reason a Weyrleader may be removed from duty. He will fill in until the Senior Queen rises and he is either confirmed as Weyrleader or is replaced by someone else.

Wingleader

The Wingleaders command their own Wings, from their training and drills to the time that they rise to meet Thread. A Wingleader's duties include:

  • Assigning Sweeprider schedules
  • Appointing their Wingseconds
  • Devise Wing formations that will enable their Wing to meet Thread effectively
  • Receiving Sweep and weather reports, which are compiled and sent to the Weyrleader
  • Approving transfers in and out of their Wing, dependent upon the Wingleader's approval
  • Devising drills and drill schedules that will prepare their Wing to meet Thread effectively
  • Mediating Wingrider disputes - often problems are solved at this level and don't need to be taken to the Weyrleader

Wingleaders report to the Weyrleader, and are reported to by their Wingseconds.

Wingleader's Second and Thirds

Wingseconds and Wingthirds are appointed by the Wingleader. They will assist the Wingleader in leading and devising drills and Wing formations. They may lead the Wingriders in the second wave of a Fall, run 'drills, mediate disputes between Wingriders, write reports, and participate in any other duties assigned to them by the Wingleader. The Wingsecond may lead the Wing in the event the Wingleader is unable due to illness, injury, or any other reason a Wingleader may be removed from duty. In this case, the Wingthird may temporarily act as Wingsecond until either rank is replaced or the rider returns.

In the Fighting Wings, a Wingsecond is always a bronze or brown rider, while a Wingthird can be any color. As a blue or green rider cannot fly a full 'Fall, they are expected to continue Theadfall-related duties from the Weyr after caring for their dragon.

In the Queen's Wing, goldriders may also hold Wingsecond and Wingthird rank.

Weyrlingmaster

The Weyrlingmaster generally has two formal assistants (designated as his 'Second and 'Third, generally indicating their experience). The Weyrlingstaff can be riders of any color, though historically the Weyrlingmaster is usually a bronze or brown rider. The Weyrlingmaster always has a decade or more of experience as a rider. The Weyrlingmaster may designate duties and lessons at their discretion, and may sometimes call upon other folks in the Weyr depending on what expertise is needed. The Weyrlingmaster is considered the expert in training new pairs, and the Weyrleadership usually do not override their decisions without a great deal of consideration first.

The Weyrlingstaff also oversee riders too young to join the Fighting Wings (under 16). A junior Weyrlingstaff Assistant may assist the Weyrlingstaff with basic tasks, have a chore rotation, continue craft work, or other duties as needed until they come of age.

Weyrlingmaster duties include:

  • Creating and implementing Weyrling curriculum
  • Mediating disputes between Weyrlings
  • Preparing Candidates for possible Impression through Candidate classes
  • Discusses possible Wing placements for graduating Weyrlings with Wingleaders
