Description: Help with homework is needed for a bored Candidate
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 9, day 12 of Turn 7
Lanniya had found that not living in the barracks did have one downside. She
hadn't gotten to know the other candidates well outside of class. During
class, however, it was harder to pay attention to her peers. She had already
been taken to task for daydreaming during lessons. She sighed and rested her
chin on her hand in the dining cavern, staring at the piles of hides next to
her that she was supposed to read, then exhaled with a flapping of her lips.
She hated studying; there was so much outside to do and being stuck indoors
with a bunch of hides was not her picture of a pleasant afternoon.
"That is not going to make things move on faster," Reyela said to the other
girl with a grin. "It's Lanniya, right?"
Looking up, Lanniya gave a quick smile. "Yes. You're Reyela, right? I was
kind of hoping it would disappear or something." She looked mournfully at
the stacks of hides beside her. "It would be okay if it was actually
interesting, but its all stuff about maps. "
"Oh, geography." The other girl pulled a face. "My Da's good at that stuff.
I bet he could give you an an overview, if you'd like?"
"Can he make it less boring?" Lanniya looked suddenly hopeful.
"Anything to help get it over with. I want to go back outside."
"I'm sure he can," Reyela leaned back in her chair, trying to spot her
father. "There he is. Da! Da! over here!!"
The shout was unmistakebly one of his girls, thought K'reyel as he excused
himself from the greenrider he was chatting to. "My daughter needs me, just
one moment," he said politely. A moment or two later he was with the girls.
"Da, this is Lanniya and she's new here, she needs a little help with these
hides on the area, please?" Reyela looked up at her father pleadeingly.
"It'll only take a few moments.
Lanniya looked up, her bright eyes wide and mirroring Reyela's. "Please? I'm
not very good with studying because I've never really had to and these maps
just don't make sense to me."
"I see," K'deren took the map and spread it out. "We're here," he said
pointing to a spot after a moment. "That's north, over the sea. Dolphin
Cove is this direction, Dragonsfall is here, and this is Dream's End." He
began, "Sea of Azov here, and that's Opal Cove Hold."
Lanniya nodded. "But why do we have to learn exactly where they are? I mean,
if we Impress, then we have to get images from other dragons who have been
there, right?"
"Sometimes you need to give other people directions. For example," began
K'deren. "I once went out trying to find an injured holder when I was at
Dream's End. He'd fallen from his runner rounding up herdbeasts, and the
runner had gone down too. If I'd landed to help, the herdbeasts would have
been spooked, and possibly done more damage to the injured man. It meant I
had to be able to describe to the holders where he was and how to find him
quickly."
"Hm." Lanniya looked down at the map and sighed. "So, we have to memorize
this? I mean, my grandfather used a few maps, but they were mostly for
trails we could follow in our wagons. He mostly had them memorized." She
looked at Reyela. "How much do you have memorized."
Reyela grinned, "Not all of it, just enough to know that if someone showed
me the maps I could use it to show the way somewhere, and what the major
landmarks are around here."
"Well, I know some major land marks around roads. I just never really
thought to look at them from over head." Lanniya paused. "I guess they would
look different, huh?"
"Some look bigger, some look smaller," K'reyel told her.
Lanniya gave a little frown. "So how do you memorize all this stuff?" She
plopped her head on her hand. "It's so _boring_."
"Make a game of it," Reyela told her. "find some funny things that rhyme
with the names, just, just don't ever use them in a test."
"Hm.." She looked down at the map and tucked a strand of hair behind her
ears. "So what would rhyme with Amber?"
"Clamber?" suggested Reyela.
Lanniya blinked slowly and sucked in her lip as she looked over the map.
"Uhm...clamber over the hills to Amber? Would that work?"
"I think so."
Lanniya stared at the map a moment longer and ran a hand through her hair at
her brow. "I think I could remember that way. I think."
"Good," K'reyel told her. "You'll get the hang of it eventually."
Looking up, Lanniya flashed a bright smile. "Thank you. I appreciate your
help, sir."
"You're welcome," the bronzerider told her.
Having had enough studying, Lanniya rolled her map up. She would finish it
later, she decided. Much later. She wanted to be outside. "Thanks, Reyela.
Care to come to the lake with me?"
"Sure," the bronzerider's daughter threw her father a grin. "I'll see you
for dinner tomorrow?"
"Yes, with your sister," K'reyel told her.
Lanniya grinned, waved at K'reyel and darted for freedom, outside.
