Description: The Weyrwoman and the new Wingleader get to know each other.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 8, day 12 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: Saidrene, Jenackt
K'ran stayed in the wing lounge long after everyone else had left,
critically assessing his own performance. The wing had proved solid as
always in a formation they knew well. But he needed to work on his
ordering, because that couple of seconds on the switchover where he'd
had to repeat himself would -
}:Enough,:{ his dragon sent. }:Eat. Bathe me. Something.:{
He sighed and corralled the hides into a packet. He could review them later.
"Wingleader K'ran," Saibra's voice filled the lounge as she walked in.
There was still ash and soot on her riding leathers, and some even
flecked the inky black braid that trailed down her back. "I just
finished unloading and checking my flamethrower," and that was always
a chore, "and saw that your dragon was waiting for you. I thought
perhaps we could get to know each other while we worked. Chioneth only
spared me from her presence long enough to come and give the
inviation." She grinned a little.
"That would be fine, Weyrwoman," he said formally, with a polite smile in
her direction. "I'm sorry I haven't had a chance to get to know you better
before."
"Don't worry about it," Saibra said with a wave of her hand as she
waited for the man, "you and I have both been busy getting to know our
Wings."
He fell into step behind her. "Yes, it's been quite the re-adjustment for
all of us here, hasn't it?"
"Fortunately for me the Queen's Wing was in good order, I basically
just had to learn names and fall into place. I hope things for you
have been going as smoothly." Saibra said as they made their way down
to the Winter Lake where they could bathe their dragons without fear
of freezing to death.
"It helps that I've been in the wing as long as I've been here," he added.
"Knew the patterns, made it easier."
Saibra considered that information, "Sometimes it is hard assuming
leadership in the Wing to which you have served, but, I am glad to
hear that things are going well for you. Were you born at
Dragonsfall?" She asked as they reached their dragons.
"A small cot hold in this territory," he said. "I've traveled all over.
Far Island, Dolphin Cove, Ista. I've always wanted to see the next place
over."
"I hope you have that traveling bug out of your system then," Saibra
said truthfully, "Dragonsfall is in need of some leaders who are in it
for the long haul."
"I could use staying in one place for a bit," he answered. "I have family
in this region, and it's time I settle down and be the leader my dragon
thinks I am."
"Dragons have a way of telling you what to do with their infinite
wisdom." There was sarcasm in her voice as Chioneth chuffed out a sigh
and submerged in the water.
He laughed. "Did you expect to Impress gold and become a leader? I thought
I'd ride a brown and be a messenger forever." The innocence of pre-Thread
times.
Saibra tugged her boots off and shimmied out of her riding leathers,
revealing a long pair of shorts on underneath. Pulling her sweater
over her head, the Weyrwoman wore nothing but a skimpy bathing suit
top. Luckily the winter lake kept the cavern warm enough to wash the
dragons and not freeze to death in the water.
"No," she answered K'ran, "I only became a Candidate because my
friends were doing it. I really gave no serious thoughts as to what my
future would be. I was a foolhardy young girl who Impressed to a gold
dragonet. Chioneth was never foolhardy, though, she whipped me into
shape fast."
K'ran kept his eyes politely averted and began to change out of his own
gear so he could clean his dragon.
"That they're good at." Rogueth made his own sound of agreement. "But they
always know."
Saibra sighed a little at the Wingleader's polite glance away while
she got rid of some clothing. **Another prude! Are there no people
around here that like a little skin and some fun?** It was just
another reminder of the new world she was in. Grabbing up her bucket
and brush, Saibra strode down into the water and to her waiting
dragon.
}:Excuse me, Rogueth.:{ Chioneth said as she extended one long, golden
wing for Saibra to begin scrubbing.
Rogueth moved a little farther away to give Chioneth room. }:You are
majestic in flight,:{ he told her, having observed her earlier.
K'ran also began work on cleaning his dragon. After a moment, he
noticed Saibra was a little quiet, and he wondered if it was communing
with her dragon or if he had offended her.
"Do you like to read?"
"I do," Saibra said as she scrubbed vigorously with her long-handled
brush. She looked up approvingly as Chioneth called down some
firelizards who eagerly perched on the Queen's back, cooing and making
noises of awe. "And you, K'ran? Do you like to read?"
"Traveler accounts, mostly. Gives me ideas of places to go and what people
were like."
That sounded rather boring to Saibra, but she made a polite noise in
the back of her throat, "I am afraid my reading is of the more
frivolous nature."
"I used to read sea pirate stories," he confessed. "The harper who wrote
them died 30 Turns ago, and nobody else has stepped up to continue them."
"Maybe you should continue them." Saibra said as she hopped up and
down a little bit on the balls of her feet to scrub some hard to reach
places beneath Chioneth's wing joint.
He wanted to offer to help, but knew he wouldn't do any better. "That's an
interesting idea," he said contemplatively."I wish I could meet a real sea
pirate."
Saibra smiled a little, "My son, Kaibren, is rather in love with sea
pirates as well. More than becoming a crafter or a dragonrider he
dreams of being a mighty pirate." She glanced over her shoulder at
K'ran with a grin, "But he is nine so I am hoping he reconsiders
that."
He laughed at that image. He rather liked children. "He sounds ambitious
and fascinating. Perhaps I'll meet him some day."
"I am sure you will, he is usually barreling around the Weyr at full
force. Keeping his foster mother busy." Saibra saw many of the same
qualities that she had showcased as a child rearing their head in
Kaibren. She supposed it was payback for the havoc she had caused her
foster mother.
He grinned. "Is it very nice to have your family here?"
Saibra smiled a little, "I love having my children with me. Although
my oldest is pretty much out of the nest now." Especially after that
little incident with Jenackt...
"Well, I'm glad that it helps." Maybe she'd be more likely to stay if she
had something grounding her here. He was used to not expecting very much
of the goldriders, but Saibra seemed fine to talk to.
