N'vanik waited until L'pin was seated. "So, how are things going with
the weyrlings?"
"They're doing well. I'll miss this outgoing class, they were relatively
easy to handle. The candidates, some of them are more interesting."
"Like Jenackt?" N'vanik said with a hint of amusement. Sh'del couldn't
stand him, but maybe L'pin had a different opinion.
"He's not too bad, actually. I offered to give him some extra help with
reading and writing if he needs it. But we've got some hold bred
candidates who I'm afraid are going to cause trouble," he said.
"Adjustment problems?" N'vanik asked. There were always a few.
"There's a jealousy problem brewing among some of the boys. Nothing to
keep anyone off the sands yet, but I'm worried about having bad blood
among the clutch. If I hear anything else, I'll let you know."
N'vanik frowned. "Alright. I don't want any serious jealousy near my
clutch." Negative emotions were bad for the hatchlings.
"I know there's always some disappointment, but I don't want too much
trouble. "
He changed the topic to a nicer note. "The last few blooded weyrlings
should be ready to go into the wings soon."
"Good. With such a small class, we need every weyrling we can get."
N'vanik shifted in his chair. "Speaking of classes, we'll have another
one soon. A good-sized one this time."
"That should be a morale booster. Everyone loves a successful Hatching."
"I'll be needing a full weyrling staff to deal with them. Would you be
willing to take on the responsibilities of a 'Third?" N'vanik would
understand if the man needed more time, or if he didn't want the
promotion at all.
"I'd be honored to, sir." He hadn't been sure at first, but now he found
that working with them again was incredibly rewarding and far less painful
than he had thought.
N'vanik smiled. "Great. I'm glad you're back working with them. You're
good at it."
It was nice to have a Weyrleader who believed fully in him and what he was
doing. "Thank you, sir. I think we have a good group of masters and
assistants, with a wide variety of perspectives for them."
The Weyrleader nodded. "It'll be nice to have a full staff again." And
it wouldn't hurt to have someone in the position who was grateful to
N'vanik and who could help support Jenackt. **Look at me, all
political.**
"Indeed, especially with the large clutches," he said. "Is there anything
else I can answer for you today?"
"Have you met the new Headwoman yet?" N'vanik asked. The weyrlingstaff
often worked closely with her role.
"I have indeed." To his credit, he didn't manage to blush. "We seem to get
along very well. She's adjusting to the Weyr, and I think a holdbred
person will actually be very good for some of the candidates and weyrlings
from such a background."
N'vanik nodded. "Someone who can understand their issues with adjusting."
"Exactly. I've tried to do that for the male candidates, but it might be
easier for the females to approach her. I don't know if you've heard about
the weyrling at Dragonsfall who's been having a very hard time with it,
but I'm worried about that kind of incident happening here." He thought
with a pang of a few of his favorites.
"No, I haven't. What's going on over there?" N'vanik didn't keep up as
much with Dragonsfall, although with Saibra there he expected that
would change.
"There's a green weyrling who has a dragon who won't let her out of her
sight. Scratched up a Weyrlingmaster," he added. "I heard something about
adaptation issues. Again, I don't think this group will be that severe. I
do think that having extra resources to help them adjust will prevent
that."
"Hm. Well, I hope you and the others will be able to nip that, if we
ever get a similar problem." A dragon attacking another rider was
something N'vanik wouldn't tolerate. "Weyrlingmaster... isn't J'darin
still Weyrlingmaster over there?"
"He is," L'pin confirmed, wondering if the two bronzeriders still had any
bad feelings about the other. He did feel compelled to add, "It sounds
like a complicated issue for him to solve."
"Ah, yes. And I know how good he is with complicated issues," N'vanik
said sarcastically. Once again he was glad he hadn't let J'darin be
Weyrlingmaster here.
Yep, that sounded like tension. "If a girl doesn't want to be at the Weyr,
but Impresses before she can be sent home, what can we do? I worry for
Jenackt as well - he seems to be settling in, but does he truly want
this?"
"I think he does, but he's afraid to admit it. Probably even to
himself." After such a hard life, hope might feel like a dangerous
thing. "His authority issues will probably be an obstacle, but he's
smart and knows how to work hard."
"If he does Impress, those will be good traits. At least he won't be
afraid of some of the lessons."
The Weyrleader nodded. "He needs a lot of help with reading and
writing, though."
L'pin nodded. "I promise you, I'll get him through. I know others have
some doubts, but I think he's got a good heart. Most of them do."
N'vanik smiled. "I'm really glad to have you back with the weyrlings.
I know you'll do right by them."
The bluerider appreciated the praise, and the trust it showed. "Shall I go
let the others know, then?"
"Yes. I hope Sh'del and D'naz are as happy to have you as I am."
N'vanik stood and offered his hand. "Congratulations."
L'pin took it as well and shook it. "Much appreciated."
