Kapera

Kapera arrived at the Weyrwoman's door just as the worker who was
bringing the trays did. Good, then - she wasn't late to this meeting.

She knocked on the door so the other woman wouldn't have to shift what
she was carrying. "Kapera here to see you, ma'am,"

"Come in," Cyradis called cheerily. She was glad to see the other
goldrider and see how she was faring.

The worker set up the trays according to directions. "What would you like
to drink?" she asked them both.

Kapera took a seat and chose juice. "How are you feeling?"

"Tired most of the time," Cyradis replied after asking for tea. "But
thats expected at this stage."

"Aren't you close now? Are you excited for it to be done and to meet her
or him?"

"I have a few weeks to go," she smiled. "And from memory the
last few days seem to take the longest."

"Hopefully you won't be too bored. I'm sure Meledei and I can continue to
bring you things to read - maybe even something nicer than just hides!"

"Thank you Kapera," she truly appreciated the visits and the reading
materials. It made her days go by that much more swiftly. "How is
Meledei doing?"

"She's doing well in the wing, and she's a pleasure to work with," Kapera
said sincerely.

"Good," Cyradis smiled. She hadn't been able to spend as much time
with Meledei as she would have liked but she was glad to hear of her
progress. "She has a good head on her shoulders. I have hopes she'll
develop into a fine Wingleader someday."

"I wouldn't be surprised at all by that." Kapera had been very impressed
by Meledei, and it made her think of other young goldriders with a little
bit of guilt.

"How are _you_ doing Kapera?" Cyradis had always been one to take an
interest in younger gold riders and help them through adjustment
periods. Of course with her own inability to be at her full
involvement with the daily operation of her wing were limited.

"The first time leading the wing was nerve-wracking," she admitted. "But
it comes back, and the regular core of the wing is an excellent group of
riders."

Cyradis smiled at the praise for her riders. "I like to think they
are," she nodded. "I hear you know our newest transfer? He came and
introduced himself to me the other day."

It made sense for all dragonriders to know their Weyrwoman, and especially
the bronzeriders, but a small flicker of jealousy still hit her. "J'nus?
We flew together at Dragonsfall," she confirmed.

"Yes," she smiled. "J'nus seemed very nice actually. Not the typical
bronzerider to be sure." She shifted her bulk a little to ease her
back. She'd be very happy to finally hold her baby instead of carrying
it around under her heart.

"He's different alright," Kapera agreed.

"I like that he has solid leadership experience. I know Dolphin Cove has
much better strength than at some points this Pass, but it doesn't hurt to
have some older bronzeriders around." Of course, it seemed like some of
the best bronze riders at this Weyr were transplants - she wondered how
Cyradis felt about that.

"That is a plus," Cyradis nodded. "And he promised me a fan," she held
up a finger at that as if to point out a very significant positive.

Kapera laughed. "That's going to be quite an improvement. Speaking of, I
heard about planned renovations and that there will be some Technicians
around here?"

"Yes," Cyradis exclaimed. "We just need the Master to arrive to help
us coordinate them all and put the plan into action. There is much
that has to be done before they can begin actually putting electricity
into the weyrs," she smiled at the other goldrider. "But there will be
noise, dust and disruption all over. I can imagine our good headwoman
will be at her wits end keeping everything clean."

Kapera winced in sympathy. "Adding electricity is going to be most
important to bolster the kitchens and common areas, right?" She wondered
if she'd get to coordinate with that

"Oh yes that is my plan," Cyradis nodded. "Actually, I'd like your
input as we have more technicians arriving soon to manage their phases
of the project. We'll be housing them where we had the Harpers before
they moved back to their new Hall at Emerald Falls."

Kapera hadn't spent much time in those areas, but they seemed nice
enough. "Does that mean they'll be having families?"

"Well, I couldn't deny them that if they're going to be here for months or
turns, And we have the space," she smiled.

"I just think it will be fascinating. It's such an unusual and complicated
craft, and getting to learn about it will be interesting."

"Very," she agreed. "And some of our people can pick up some useful
skills. I am actually hoping some of our young people decide to take
up the craft."

Kapera mulled that over. "Is that a Craft we don't have many apprenticing
to here?" She knew some were far more popular than others.

"It's been awhile since we've had senior journeymen let alone a
Master." Cyradis was actually happy about the number of crafters that
had accepted her invitations to participate in the project. "We also
have a Master Mason arriving soon."

"Really? That's quite a complement," Kapera said, impressed by the news.
"I suppose working for the Weyr like this is prestigious."

"Word is spreading," she smiled. "I do believe our project will be
firmly out of the planning stages and actual work will start soon."

"That's exciting. How much will we be involved in it?" The Crafters were
the Headwoman's domain, but that didn't mean the goldriders didn't get
involved.

"We're fully involved in the planning of the project and will work
with the Master in charge of the Technicians as they progress."
Cyradis started. "Of course the Headwoman will see to their housing
and needs and coordinate the support of additional personnel. But
they've also agreed to provide repair parties for our existing
systems."

"I guess that makes sense, since the new systems have to be integrated
with the old ones, and if they're repairing the old ones they know what,
uh, stresses it can bear?" She was running up against her limited
knowledge of the Craft. "I'll be really interested to see this go."

"It certainly will," she agreed.
