Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 8, day 12 of Turn 7
Saidrene's knees still felt weak as she stood beside of Ashareth,
helping feed the dragonet as she had seen other Weyrlings do. She had
not attended Dolphin Cove's hatching as a Candidate but as a guest
with her mother. The fact that Ashareth had chosen her from among the
crowd in the Stands was humbling and her fingers trembled with awe as
she gently ran them over her lifemate's beautiful pale green hide.
}:I chose the best.:{ Ashareth said with disdain as she glanced around.
The comment startled a laugh out of Saidrene.
Zith looked up at the sudden laugh and his chewing stopped for only a
moment before he snorted softly and went back to his meat.
J'ackt lifted his eyes to gaze in the direction Zith was and went
still. Saidrene? But she had left... He hadn't seen her in the
assembled candidates. His gaze quickly took in that she was not
wearing hatching robes and his brows shot up. "Saidrene?" His voice
was soft. He cleared it continued. "Congratulations."
The happiness she had felt ebbed a little as she looked up into
Jenackt's eyes. **J'ackt.** She reminded herself automatically,
finding it strange after having known his full name for so long.
"Thanks. You too." She tipped her head in the direction of his bronze
lifemate. She wasn't surprised by it but then she knew J'ackt better
than most.
}: What's that you're feeling? It feels funny in my head. :{ Zith's
gaze suddenly peered at Saidrene with more interest.
J'ackt grimaced slightly and cleared his throat. **Nothing. Don't
worry about it. ** He handed Zith another piece of meat and cleared
his throat. "I'm glad you Impressed. Didn't think I would see you
again."
"Yes, well, it wasn't really in the plan. I just came to the hatching
to watch but when Ashareth broke her shell.... I just knew," she
lifted her shoulders, unable to explain the feeling that had overcame
her as she had hurried onto the hatching sands from her seat.
Ashareth's pale green head snaked around Saidrene's leg to look at
J'ackt and Zith.
"Well, I'm glad for you anyway." He shifted on his feet, feeling
awkward for the first time around her. Zith watched him with growing
curiosity and he felt the curious gaze as he idily wiped his bloody
hands on his hatching robe. "And...I'm sorry. For what happened."
Saidrene nodded, also feeling the awkward tension between them. It had
never been like that before. "Yeah." She doubted he was sorry that he
had slept with her mother, but just sorry for being caught. "Well I
guess it is water under the bridge now."
He shrugged. "Guess so. Well...see you in classes, I guess."
"Okay." How lame that simple word sounded to her ears. There had been
a point in time when she had worried over sounded silly in front of
Jenackt. His disarming blue eyes and rare smile were enough to
typically throw her off balance. Now things were strained and awkward.
She hated that.
}:You are acting weird.:{ Ashareth declared not so privately.
}:Mine is feeling weird too. He wasn't before. :{ Zith eyed Saidrene pointedly.
J'ackt nodded brusquely and turned on his heel. "Come on Zith."
Saidrene watched him go, her attention broken when Ashareth butted her
dangling hand. Her fingers rubbed along the green's eyeridge, a smile
coming to her lips. No matter what happened, she would always have
Ashareth.
}:That's right. Come, he made you feel strange. We'll avoid them in
the future.:{
**Oh we will?** Saidrene asked with amusement.
}:Yes.:{ Ashareth's tone was matter-of-fact as she began waddling
toward the Weyrling Barracks, following the trail of other dragonets
and newly minted riders.
