Saibra

Saibra's heart had frozen in her chest the moment Saidrene stood and began making a path down toward the Hatching Sands. It was obvious a green dragonet on the Sands was looking for someone but.. Saidrene? She watched, torn between pride and fear as Saidrene took hold of the green dragonet's head, a smile wreathing her face.

}: It is a strong match. Your hatchling has done well with Panitath's daughter.:{ Chioneth informed her in her elegant tone.

Done well? Saibra had no doubt of that but all she could think of as she watched Saidrene leave the sands with her new lifemate was that she was losing her daughter.

Saidrene was not surprised to find her mother waiting as she headed toward the Weyrling Barracks with a very sleepy Ashareth. The Dragonsfall Weyrwoman struck a handsome contrast to the tropical Weyr in her long, silken black dress. The unshed tears that glistened in her blues eyes startled Saidrene.

"She is beautiful." Saibra spoke first, her voice tinted with emotion.

}:Who is this?:{ Ashareth demanded, tilting her lovely head.

**My mother.** Saidrene could feel Ashareth's curiosity turn to happiness.

}:Mother.:{ She repeated the phrase.

"Her name is Ashareth." Saidrene finally said to Saibra. It was the most she had said to her mother since they had left Dolphin Cove, since she had found her mother sleeping with Jenackt.

Saibra had never felt such inner turmoil. She was so happy for her daughter, her eldest, her baby girl, but why did she have to impress at a different Weyr? It would be the first time since she had given birth to Saidrene that they would not be living in the same Weyr. She finally had to let go and let her baby leave the nest. How did other mothers do that?

"A strong name." She murmured in return. There was a moment of hesitation on the goldrider's part before she stepped forward and embraced Saidrene. "You will always be my daughter, no matter how much I screw up, and no matter how old you get. I know they will take care of you here but if you ever need me, for anything, at any time, I am just a heartbeat away."

Saidrene felt unbidden tears rush to her eyes, her throat feeling suddenly dry as she buried her face into her mother's shoulder and breathed in that scent that only belonged to one's mother. Despite everything that had happened, Saidrene found her arms wrapped around her mother. It was the end of her childhood. Impressing Ashareth was the dawning of a new chapter in her life. She could make this chapter whatever she wanted it to be. She didn't need her mother, and she didn't need Jenackt. She had Ashareth. Ashareth was all she needed.

"I love you mom." Her voice was strangled as tears leaked from the corners of her eyes.

"Oh baby I love you too." Saibra breathed, stroking her hand down the teenager's long black hair.

The two hugged for a long while until Saibra finally drew back, "You had better get Ashareth to bed."

The green was nearly dozing on her feet, and Saidrene smiled.

"Yeah, and you need to get to the hatching feast. Can't keep the good Weyrleader G'nir waiting, can you?" Saidrene grinned a little.

Saibra smiled in return, "Right you are." She reached out and touched Saidrene's chin, sobering, "I mean it. If you need me... Anytime."

Saidrene nodded, "I know."

The Dragonsfall Weyrwoman let out a shaky exhale, "Allright then. One hot Weyrleader is waiting, and I may yet snag a dance from R'enh." She winked at Saidrene before turning and heading toward the dining cavern.

Saidrene watched her mother go, her heart feeling lighter than it had in weeks. "Come on Ash, let's get you to bed."

Ashareth crooned her approval as they once again resumed their path to the Weyrling barracks.
