Briata

The news that there was someone else like her was certainly
interesting. Even if Y'gel hadn't suggested it, Briata would have
sought the young woman out simply for the fact that they both had a rare
talent in common. As soon as she was told that Lanniya was going to
stay, that was exactly what she did. She didn't have to look far. Even
as Briata made her way through the halls, a girl who matched the image
Aug had passed along to her. "Lanniya?" She figured she must be a
sight, a young woman with two infants, an older one on her back, the
younger on her front, both in wraps that allowed her to carry them at
the same time. Well, that was life with babies. "Hello."

"Hi!" Lanniya gave a little hop on her toes and tilted her head. "That's
me." Her voice sounded positively chipper. "Who're you?" She glanced at
the children. "You work in the creche?"

Well, she certainly had energy, didn't she? Briata offered a small
smile. "I'm a foster mother though before that I was an apprentice
weaver." And she still worked on various projects, she just no longer
had time to take classes. She could have given her son to a foster
mother and then crafted, but she'd far rather tkae care of him than
craft. "My name is Briata. My Weyrmate, Y'gel, told me about you."

"Oh! It's so nice to meet you. Y'gel is so nice. He got my grandmother
to let me stay." Impulsively, she hugged Briata, taking care not to
put pressure on the children.

The intimate gesture was odd coming from someone whom she barely new.
Briata accepted it graciously, but she sincerely hoped the young woman
would refrain from such gestures in the future - at least til they got
to know each other better! "He said you were from a caravan?" She
queried once a little space was settled between them.

Lanniya nodded. "Yes. My grandparents are traders. Well, they were
traders. They wanted to stay here with me."

"Oh? Did they stay?" They wanted to, but that didn't mean they had
followed through. Had the girl been left at the Weyr without family?
Briata had done that once - a time that seemd an eternity ago.

"Of course they did." Her smile was bright. "I'm staying with them until
the eggs are laid and then I'll have to move to the barracks."

"Well that's good, to have family close by." Briata missed hers and
visited on occasion, but life had to be lived and she couldn't go
traipsing around all of Pern with two children_all_ the time. "How
long have you been able to hear dragons?"

"I'd miss them too much otherwise." Lanniya admitted. She paused and
tilted her head. "As long as I can remember, really. Of course, my
grandparents thought I was a bit loopy most of the time, so I didn't
talk about it."

Briata nodded slowly. "I had a similar experience. I was taken to a
healer once as well." Her parents had worried, but then were
accepting once they realised what it was she was hearing real voices
rather than make believe ones.

Connections were made and her brows rose. Y'gel had said his weyrmate
could hear dragons too. How wonderful! "They never took me to a
Healer. I guess they just thought I was a bit strange. Maybe I
am...just a bit." She grinned. "But they did worry and I hated that."

"But now it all makes sense." And once it had, no one ever thought
about taking her to a healer or worrying what those voices in her head
were saying. They were all dragons, and dragons were, at least by her
father and his hold, very well respected. "How are you adjusting to
Weyrlife?"

Oh, I knew what they were right away, but my grandparents thought they
were just imaginary friends." She made a joking twirling motion by her
temple with her finger. "I love the Weyr. Its amazing. Its all so big
and beautiful." She then squirmed a little with a flush. "I'm not used
to the lack of clothing really. I try not to look. My grandfather loves
it, at least when my grandmother isn't paying attention."

"And that is another thing we have in common." Briata was so grateful
Y'gel had a private bathing room. She'd hated it when she had to use
the public bath and always took pains to do so when almost no one was
there. "It's best late at night. I rarely find someone using the bath."

"I guess I'll have to get used to it. I have to go to bed early." She
sighed. "I'll just do my best not to look or bathe with my grandmother
and the other cavern women."

Briata nodded slowly. It was a hard adjustment and even after her time
there, with a Weyrmate, Briata still found some things about the Weyr
that were difficult to deal with. "Then you're going to Stand as a
candidate?"

"Oh yes." Lanniya nodded. "I'm so excited about it, too. To have a
dragon of my own...that's like a dream."

As it was for many. Briata had been encouraged, but she had yet to
accept that call. Honestly, she didn't feel like it was her call and
she was satisfied with where her life had taken her. The road she had
traveled had been full of surprises, but she was loved, had a beautiful
baby boy, and was in care of a lovely little girl out of her Weyrwoman.
"If you can hear dragons, I understand that you will most likely Impress."

Lanniya tilted her head. "Why don't you have one then?"

"Because I've chosen not to Stand."

That made Lanniya frown. "But why? I mean, if you hear them, doesn't
that make you want to be more connected to them?" She couldn't imagine
not wanting to be bonded to one of those wonderful creatures.

A small smile flitted over Briata's lips. "Because I am connected to
them already. And I don't feel like I'm called to be a dragonrider. I
feel like I'm called to be a mother to my child and a foster mother to
Nisheyl. This is where I belong."

She thought about that and her brow furrowed. "I don't know if I'd want
a baby, myself." She looked about. "There's just so much to do and see."
Lanniya looked back at Briata. "I guess I'm like my parents like that."

"Indeed." So much to do and see and the girl was also very easily
distracted. Briata managed another smile. "Don't be afraid to
explore. It's a big Weyr and I'm sure even those who have lived here
all their lives haven't seen every nook."

"Isn't there a map or anything?" Lanniya ran her hand through her hair,
idly working out a tangle. "Whenever we traveled, we always had a map of
where we were going. Surely the Weyr has a map of all of its places."

"Now that I'm not sure, but the Headwoman might know." A map would have
come in handy, but she hadn't thought about whether or not the weyr had
one for it's halls. Briata had just learned by getting lost and finding
her way again.

"I'll have to ask her then." She paused and then tapped her chin. "Is
there any place I shouldn't go? I mean, I heard about the flight rooms
and stuff, so I'm not going to go there, but that's the only place that
anyone has said not to go."

"That's the one I avoid the most. I also wouldn't go on the Sands
without permission - you could get in a lot of trouble, at least when a
gold has her clutch on them." Briata never assumed even she would be
allowed, even with as good a relationship she had with the dragons.
"And I would recommend you not wander through the kitchens, the cooks
don't generally care for that."

Lanniya frowned a little. "So, how do you get permission? Just ask the
gold? Hmm..." She had yet to face to face speak to one of the golds, but
they seemed to keep more to themselves. She then turned, mind going
elsewhere. "Did it take you a long time to learn how to filter all of
them out?"

"Well, no. You either get Searched or you approach the Headwoman and
ask if you can Stand." Briata had been encouraged and almost forced to
stand by previous and present Weyrwomen, but she'd never felt like that
was for her. "I doubt you will be refused considering your ability."

"Oh, I've already been Searched. I was when I first arrived. I was
talking about just visiting the eggs." Lanniya's eyes drifted away, her
thoughts latching on to a thought. "I wonder if you can speak to them in
the egg."

"Ah. Visiting the eggs is quite a different matter entirely. The
candidates will have a chance to visit the eggs, so simply be patient."
Lanniya's wondering had her pondering the same thing. "That I don't
know. I've never tried." Though somehow she doubted it.

"Hmm..Maybe I can try." She turned back to Briata and kept her smile.
"It's just a thought."

"Let me know. If the gold will allow me, I would be interested in
trying myself." Briata had to admit that she was rather curious now.
"I should get back and put the babies down for a nap. It was nice to
meet you, however, Lanniya."

"I'll do that." Lanniya nodded eagerly. "It was very nice to meet you too."
