}:It is a memory from long ago.:{ Chioneth's voice was soothing in her
mind as the Queen moved out onto the ledge, curling one golden wing
around to shield Saibra from the icy wind. The gold could not remember
Keavath on her own, but only through Saibra's dreams and memories.
Saibra buried her face against her lifemate's warm, soft hide and
sobbed. Her heart had never been the same since. She had never loved
anyone the way that she had K'fel. When he died, her heart had gone
with it....
An arm stole around her in the dark. "Hey," he said softly. "Are you
alright?" He'd been eating his breakfast when Mnoranth had told him
that Chioneth's was very unhappy. But it was the tone he'd used that
told him this was more than just the weather or discomfort with the
Weyrleader.
Saibra flinched at the unexpected touch. **Chioneth?**
}:I could not bring you the other two faces in your dream.:{ The Queen
explained.
Saibra couldn't believe that R'enh had come all the way from Dolphin
Cove. He smelled like sunshine and ocean air, as usual. She reached up
and quickly dried her tears with the palm of her hand.
"I'm sorry, I didn't know she was going to speak to Mnoranth and bring
you all this way."
It had happened before with Rhosyn so it didn't really surprise him.
Mnoranth was always willing to please a gold in any way he could.
"It's alright," he smiled and folded her into his arms. "What happened?"
Saibra had never talked to anyone about K'fel since his death. The
kind of woman she had become after her weyrmate died made her feel
unworthy to say his name, especially to R'enh or any other man she's
slept with since.
"It's just..." She looked up into his eyes and then away, shaking her
head. "It was nothing but a dream. An old one. That coupled with all
of the changes I have experienced lately..." She was just tired and a
touch lonely for the kindred spirits she's found at Dolphin Cove.
He half smiled in the dark. "No worries," he said. "You don't have to
talk about it if you don't want." He'd recognized her reluctance and
didn't want to push. Saibra had never been one to share her innermost
thoughts and he knew what that felt like. He rarely did that himself.
"I can't keep turning to you, R'enh." Her voice was soft and broken,
"Or I will never learn to be happy here."
His arms slackened their hold. Her words hurt him a bit more than he
expected but he nodded. "Of course," he said softly. "I'm sorry you're
hurting Saibra. This was a good move for you." He didn't like it for
himself of course but that was neither here nor there. "You'll be a
good Weyrwoman for Dragonsfall." He kissed her forehead and stepped
back.
"Wait!" She reached out and grabbed the front of his shirt and stepped
toward him, "Do I have to be the Weyrwoman right now?"
"Of course not," he said putting his arms back around her loosely.
Sometimes he wanted to escape his own duties and imagine another life.
That was just the way their minds worked at times.
Saibra wrapped her arms around the bronzerider's waist and clung to
him. She wondered if Aishara knew how lucky she was to have R'enh. She
knew that he was special to many other women besides herself. Just
another reminder that she might never again have what she had
experienced with K'fel.
"Can you stay... For a little while?" She wanted to be strong enough
to let him go but there was no one at Dragonsfall she could turn to.
"Of course sweet," he said softly to the top of her head. Her actions
told him she was far more bothered by whatever had happened in her
dreams then she'd wanted to admit.
Leading the bronzerider in to her weyr, Saibra bent over the hearth
for a moment and stoked the fire back to life, chasing the shadows and
chill away. Turning back to R'enh, she motioned for him to join her on
the couch. "The dream," she began hesitantly, "I have had the same
dream a lot... Ever since... Ever since his death... My weyrmate, the
childrens' father. In the dream it is the day he dies, and I see an
exact replay of what happened...." Her voice trailed off, her eyes
unfocusing for a moment as the images whirled in her mind. Shaking her
head, she brought her eyes up to R'enh's, "Only this time, at the end
of the dream when he dies... It was you."
As he sat across from her on the couch he could follow the changes in
her face and could tell this thing was very serious to her. Death
affected them all at some point. Fighting Thread was a dangerous
business even more so in the higher wings. While he didn't really know
the details of what had happened to her weyrmate, he did know it had
been traumatic for Saibra. "I'm right here," he said, taking her
hands.
Saibra squeezed the bronzerider's hands, "I know. It is silly of me to
get so upset over a dream." Was the dream that upset her? Or the
reminder of how alone she was, and had been, since K'fel's death?
"No," he said shaking his head. "Dreams tell us things sometimes. I'm
sorry it was so hard on you." He tucked some hair behind her ear. He
liked Saibra, probably too much for his own good but she'd followed
what was best for her career, same as he had in going to Dolphin Cove.
He looked her seriously in the eyes. "I'll always come of you call."
She blinked as tears gleamed in her eyes, a small smile on her face,
"You know I love you R'enh." He was probably the only man that she had
felt emotionally close to since K'fel's death.
"Ahh sweetheart," he said and pulled her against his chest. He was
very sorry he hadn't been there for her flight for he was certain
Mnoranth would have finally made them Weyrleader. He captured her lips
in a tender kiss telling her wordlessly how much he cared.
Saibra clung to R'enh as she had earlier, trying to absorb the way he
made her feel when he was around. She would need it for the days
ahead.
