"Did you hear the latest?" Noriaki scooted a little closer to her
companion, dark eyes bright and a mischievous smile lurking upon her
lips. "About Reven's mistress?"
Damilia's overly round, and overly large green eyes nearly bulged from
her equally round face as she leaned in closer to Noriaki, "_Another_
mistress? Or that little deaf girl that ran off with his brother?"
"That deaf girl." Noriaki flicked her fingers in dismissal at the
idea of another mistress. "I heard she's pregnant. With Reven's
baby."
Damilia's double chin fell open, "I knew it all along! Why else would
she and that healer up and marry so quickly? They had to make it seem
like it's his!"
"Of course they did. Sounds like she's about as far along as Arippa.
Seems mighty fishy to me, don't you think?" Noriaki wriggled as if in
anticipation and she scooted closer to her friend. "Though they did
have a fight, Reven and that girl. Right in the hallway. I saw it."
This made the significantly rounder woman gasp again, "Do they have no
decency? I bet he is wanting her to get rid of it. Can't be
jeopardizing things for his future heir, right? And, I mean, Arippa
comes from all of that 'proper breeding' you know."
"Yeah, she's descended from a Lord Holder." Nori nodded, her
expression tightening into something more serious. "Doesn't matter.
She lost it. Or did something to force herself to lose it. It's
gone. Oh, and they made up too. I saw that when gathering laundry."
Damilia snorted, "Oh I am sure they made up after she did what he told
her to do- which was get rid of that bastard child! Now that she has
been married to his brother for a little while she can get pregnant
and at least_pretend_ its her husband's."
"Well, I saw them making up before she lost the baby. They were
holding hands and he was caressing her face - the door had swung open
you see. Then a couple of minutes later, he's zooming down the hall
with her in her arms screaming for Coran." Nori shrugged. It didn't
surprise her.
"And that Coran," Damilia took a slurpy sip of her tea, "he seems all
mooney-faced over that deaf girl. Do you think it's just an act that
he's following for Reven's sake? Or do you think he's as clueless as
Arippa is?"
"I'm not sure. I've heard of men who share women so it's possible,
but who knows." Nori shrugged her slim shoulders, but her expression
brightened again. "Oh you won't believe what I saw this morning!
Damilia smiled as she popped a sweet into her mouth. She loved coming
back from trips as Noriaki always had the_best_ news and information
to dish about, "Well? Don't keep me waiting!" A bubbly peal of
laughter escape her painted lips.
"He was in his office with her and was telling her that he loved her
and she said it back to him! She actually_talked_. I didn't think
she could talk!" Noriaka shook her head. "But I guess she can. And
they've certainly both made their feelings know to each other."
Damilia gasped so loudly that it drew the attention of others. She
coughed politely behind her hand, blushing a bit before leaning closer
to Noriaki again, "She_talked_? Are you sure about that? I thought
she was mute!"
"So did I. It was a really weird way of talking, but I could
understand her, if barely. Poor Arippa. I don't think I'd be able to
stand it." Noriakai was glad her husband wasn't like that all. A bit
of a wimp, but at least he was loyal.
Arippa rounded the corner from the other room where she'd been reading
before the ladies conversation had started making her uncomfortable.
"Shut up and Leave," Arippa said as she came through the door. "Leave
my house now," her eyes were implacable even though the words came out
of her mouth in the same tone she would have used to offer them
another cup of tea.
"And if you repeat that nonsense again, I'll cram it back down your
throat for the lies they are," she added sweetly.
Damilia gasped, her double chin bouncing in the process, "Why! I
never!" She heaved her considerable girth up out of the chair and onto
impossibly tiny feet, "I will tell everyone how inhospitable Green
Valley is! Come Noriaki!" She brushed from the room.
Noriaki rose and headed for the exit, but stopped in the threshold to
turn and face the holder. "Ma'am, some of this I heard from others,
but that last I saw and heard with my own eyes. He said 'I love you'
and she said it back. I'm not lying so I can tell you that at least
was the dragon's honest truth. Don't believe me, I wasn't the only
one there and you can ask around, but you might as well face the fact
that your husband isn't monogamous. Seems most holders aren't and
it's something you're just going to have to come to terms with." She
gave a punctuated nod, then twirled and stomped out of the room and
left before another word could be spoken.
MIschief appeared and started harassing the women as they fled. She
followed them to her doorstep to make certain they didn't stop and
didn't bother to try and control the scolding flit. Then she whirled
and went in search of Qorri. She'd make certain those two woman could
not avail themselves of her hospitality in the future without her
invitation. They had no right spying on her family for their own
gratification. Besides it scared her to think that any of them could
be spied upon so easily. More guards and a vicious canine is what she
needed around here.
