Lanniya skipped along the water's edge, letting her feet splash with
every other step. It was a bit cool, but she still relished the feel
of the water against her toes. A louder splash caught her attention
and she spun on light feet, her eyes seeking out and finding the
bronze in the water. She tilted her head and smiled. **Hello. Enjoying
the water?**

}:Yes I am little one,:{ the bronze replied after a moment. }:Do you enjoy
it too?:{

**It's a little cool for my taste. I can't wait until it gets warmer so I
can swim.** Lanniya twiddled her toes in the water, looking out at him.
**What's your name? You sound very familiar.**

}:I am Nikornath,:{ he replied. }:My rider is the Weyrleader.:{ The bronze
stretched out his wings as if to emphasize that point.

**And you're very handsome.** Lanniya immediately replied. **That's an
awfully important job. You must be very proud to have it.** She flicked the
water with her toes. It was getting cooler and as much as she hated the
thought, soon she would have to start wearing shoes again. **Is your rider
nice? I haven't met him.**

}:He is,:{ the bronze told her, even as he called his rider, informing him
that someone wanted to see him. }:I have asked him to come and see us.:{

**Oh, you didn't have to bother him with me, Nikornath, but I'd love to meet
him, especially since I'm going to be living here. I'm a Candidate.** The
last was said proudly, as though she still couldn't completely believe it.
**Maybe I'll fly with you some day.**

}:He said it was no trouble.:{ The description the bronze dragon had given
his rider clearly indicated who she was, and K'sedel had always planned to
meet her in passing at least, just to make sure she was totally happy with
being at the Weyr, and what standing and impression would mean for her.

**As long as it isn't putting him out.**

}:Her says you aren't, :{ replied the bronze after a moment to relay
messages and a reply.

She nodded and looked around her, as if fully expecting the man to
materialize out of thin air. Her bare feet left shallow prints in the sand,
but were deepened by the curling toes as she felt the texture beneath them.

"Hello there," K'sedel called out to the youngster paddling along the edge
of the water. "You must be the youngster Nikornath was talking to?"

Lanniya turned on light feet to meet K'sedel and skipped towards him before
remembering herself to give a bit of a curtsey. "Hello! You must be the
Weyrleader." She offered her hand. "I'm Lanniya."

"Well met," came the response even as he took the girl's hand and looked her
over. "Welcome to River Bluff, I hear you've made yourself a few friends
already."

"Thank you." She nodded eagerly. "I have. Everyone's been so nice to me so
far. It's better than I ever thought it would be."

"The dragons too?" asked K'sedel. Not that one of Pern's defenders would
intentionally be nasty to a youngster, but even so, it never hurt to ask,
sometimes the dragons were just unable to understand human feelings and
emotions.

"Oh yes. They've been very welcoming. And sometimes a bit open." She
blushed a little. "But it's okay, I'm learning quite a bit." She
paused and tilted her head. "Do you dance, Weyrleader?"

"With my weyrmate," he replied, wondering what had prompted such a question.

"Oh." She considered that. "I was hoping to find someone to dance
with." She shrugged. "Well, maybe later."

"Maybe at the hatching feast," the Weyrleader told her. "The harpers will
have you dancing then, whether you impress or not."

"So perhaps you can give me a dance then." She grinned at him, dimples
flashing.

"You never know," K'sedel thought there was something about this girl. "Have
you met my granddaughter Reyela yet? She must be close to your age."

With a cheeky grin, Lanniya's eyes sparked. "Sure I do. I'll get you
for a dance at the Hatching, Weyrleader. Just you wait." She paused
and then shook her head. "Not yet. Is she a candidate too?"

"Yes she is, she can tell you what it's like on the sands."

"That would be good. I'll be sure to ask around for her. Thank you. " She
gave a curstsey.

"You're welcome Lanniya, and Nikornath says that you weren't bothering him
and he appreciated talking to you."

"Maybe I'll talk to you both later." Lanniya rose to a stand. "I'd enjoy
that."

"I'm sure you would," the girls enthusiasm was catching, and that would help
her if she impressed.

Lanniya waved goodbye, ready to walk back to her grandparents new
rooms. She stopped and turned back around. "And remember, I get a
dance at the Hatching!"

K'sedel returned the wave, catching as he did Nikornath's own 'Goodbye ' to
the girl. Perhaps this girl would do well, once Orlaith clutched and the
hatching came around.
