Naton had planned it all so very well he was practically glowing with
pride as he walked over to Jylanya's office. He'd arranged with Thayde
and one of Jylanya's trusted assistants - without her knowing - that
they would take over for her for that day. Her assistant had been all
to eager to help him gather up a picnic basket that could feed a Lord.
And finally, on one of his trips to the Smithhall to oversee the
fabrication of his device, he'd found the time to commission a ring. A
ring he had picked up just two days ago. He checked his pocket one
more time before knocking on the door. Yes, the small package was
still there.
"Good morning," she said with a smile. Her door was normally open so
that anyone with an issue could just come in and talk to her. Of
course she couldn't miss the basket in his hand or the little boy
gleam in his eyes that she so loved. "What are you up to," she
chuckled.
"I've come to whisk you away from your duties," Naton declared,
putting down the basket so he could start closing the files on her
desk. "Do not worry, I've arranged for all your tasks to be taken over
for the day."
"Hey," she said in mock outrage when he started closing her files. "I
was reading that." she tried to grab one of them back and missed.
"Well you'd better have a good reason for this buddy," her hands went
to her hips though she wasn't really angry.
"I do, I do," Naton smiled as he stuffed the files into a drawer and
took her by the hand. "Just a day for the two of us." Without further
delay he dragged her off towards the harbour, silly smile still in
place.
Jylanya laughed as he pulled her along. "Naton, where are we going?
What about Vee?"
"Vee's having lunch with Milga. She's got her harper lessons and we'll
be home in time for dinner." Naton said with a smile. He'd thought of
everything, hadn't he?
"Alright," she said with a sigh. Following along she was so very
curious where this was going. "Am I going to need my hat?"
"Ah yes, that might be a good idea," Naton nodded, turning sideways to
make a quick detour past her quarters. "Anything else you might want
for an impromptu boat-ride?"
She grabbed her wide brimmed straw hat and a scarf to tie it on in the
wind. If there were going in a boat she needed to make sure she didn't
burn. "Maybe an explanation," she chuckled as she was pulled forward
again. She lifted her skirts to keep from stumbling.
"You just deserve a day off," Naton smiled, before leading her on
again. It wasn't long before they had settled into a small boat and
Naton brought them further and further on to the water, out to the
spot he had agreed on with the dolphin pod.
Jylanya was infected by his boisterous mood and smiled the whole way.
Holding onto her hat she put her face into the wind and lifted it to
get a little sun. "This is so nice Naton," she sighed. "Thank you."
"You're welcome," Naton smiled back wholeheartedly. Just as he dropped
his anchor, the entire dolphin pod emerged from the deep, tumbling out
and over the water, ready to give the pair a good show.
"Oh my," she exclaimed. Clapping and whooping at the dolphins as they
leaped and spun.
The dolphins continued their spinning and tumbling and in the
distraction they caused, Naton managed to slip the little box with the
ring to Capey, who held it in his mouth carefully. At the end of the
energetic display, the young dolphin male came up in the middle and
presented the box to Jylanya. Naton waited for her to open it with
baited breath. Inside was a elegant silver ring, crafted into little
waves and set with a gorgeous pearl of astonishing quality. It had
taken him so long to track down such a pearl, he had nearly settled
for a lesser one. He was so glad he'd waited!
Jylanya blinked and reached out to retrieve the little box, She looked
wonderingly at Naton and then thanked Capey. She almost held her
breath as she opened it. "Oh Naton," she sighed. "I've never seen
anything this beautiful in my life."
"But I have," Naton said quietly, suddenly feeling all his insides
churn with anxiety. He had practised his little speech over and over
again, but suddenly he couldn't remember half of it. "Jylanya, you're
the most beautiful woman I know. You're also the most kind and loving
and whenever I'm with you, I feel like I could never be happier. You
make me feel like the best I can be and I can't stand the thought of
ever not being with you. Will you please, please do me the honour of
becoming my wife?"
She couldn't help the silly grin as her other hand rose up to cover
her mouth. Tears formed in her eyes and she could barely speak.
Nodding vigorously she finally squeaked out a "yes."
Her reaction had Naton in limbo for what seemed the longest time ever.
She was grinning, yes, but there were also tears. Would she? Wouldn't
she? When finally the word he'd so been hoping for was uttered, he
practically launched himself at Jylanya. Alternating embraces with
kisses, he rocked their little boat in his enthusiasm. "Oh Jyls, you
just made me the luckiest man alive," he muttered under his breath as
he embraced her again.
She giggled at the sudden assault and then surrendered to his
enthusiasm by wrapping her arms around him and kissing him back. "I
love you," she said when she could get a word in.
"Oh and I love you," he sighed in ecstasy. "More than I ever thought I
could love anyone."
