Description: Pierka and her baby receive a visit
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 7, day 2 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentoned: T'nom
The Weyrleader waited for permission to enter before peeking his head
in. "Hi there. Up for a visitor?"
"Oh N'vanik," Pierka was surprised and pleased by the unexpected
arrival of the Weyrleader. The baby was asleep in his cradle and she'd
been resting. She took every opportunity to nap that she could with a
new baby's demands.
He stepped inside. "Congratulations. What's his name?" He peeked in
the cradle to see the sleeping baby.
She smiled and took the few steps in her small weyr to where she had
the cradle T'nom had made for their son. "His name is Kazom," she said
softly and picked him up so she could show him off a little.
"Nice name." He repeated it to himself, something he'd learned to do
since he was so bad at remembering names. "Did you ever work things
out with his father?" That made him think of poor Meledei and how she
and the bronzerider had broken up.
"Not completely," she said. "But he wants to be a part of the baby's
life. So that its good, and he made the cradle." Her fingers brushed
the polished surface of the carved wood.
That was something, at least. "Ah. Good workmanship." He thought of
his short time as a woodcraft apprentice. "So how are you?"
"Feeling better and not so... big," she smiled. "That last month was
difficult." Of course with her small frame, the baby had been all out
front. "I can see my toes again," she grinned.
He laughed. "That must be nice." She was younger than his daughter and
she had a child of her own. Now there was a scary thought... Cosani
having a baby.
It felt good when he laughed so she grinned at him. "I missed them
more than I thought," she looked down and wiggled them against the
rug. She looked back at the bundle in her arms. "Did you want to hold
him?"
Just a few months ago, he would have said no to the offer. "Sure. I've
had some training."
"So I've heard," she smiled and placed the tiny bundle in his arms.
"Congratulations,"
"Thanks." He remembered to support the boy's head properly. The baby
had a little fuzz of blonde hair, so in that respect he took after his
mother. "It's tough with my little girl being so far away. The time
difference is such a hassle."
Pierka laughed softly. "If you go in the middle of their night I'm
pretty sure she'll be awake." It amazed her how tiny her son was in
the big bronzerider's arms. "How old is she now?"
"Just a few sevendays. Maybe when they get older, our little ones will
play together." He smiled. "I want to bring Nisha here for visits."
"That would be nice," she smiled. He seemed to enjoy holding her son
almost as if he could feel his own baby through the contact. "Look how
comfortable he is in your arms," she said as Kazom's arms waved
randomly then he made a little grunting noise and tried to pull his
knees up. "Ooops," she grinned, "That may be a little smelly in a
moment."
"In that case, you can have him back." N'vanik offered the baby with
an amused smile.
She reached for the baby and settled him against her shoulder. "Do you
have a foster mother for Nisha here yet," she asked. "Ranari is pretty
good and will be fostering Kazom. She comes to visit us every day."
"I haven't thought about that, but I guess someone would have to watch
her if she was staying more than a few candlemarks." He couldn't
saddle poor Tal with that.
Pierka pressed her lips together to prevent a laugh, "and change her."
She turned to the changing table and began to do it for her son. "I
could show you how. It's not hard."
He eyed her for a moment. "I suppose I could watch." He wasn't excited
about that aspect of baby care.
She smiled at the look on his face. "You don't have to you know," she
said as she walked to the table and laid him down. But she remembered
how uncertain she'd been the first time she'd tried. So she just went
through the steps while he watched and soon Kazom was all clean and
the dirty cloth had been whisked away.
"I guess that's not too bad." In any case, he wouldn't have to change
his girl often.
"Right?" She smiled up at the tall Weyrleader. Wrapping Kazom snugly
she put him back in the cradle and rocked it while he relaxed back
into sleep. "Would you like something to drink?"
"No thanks. As much as I don't want to, I have some hidework to get
back to." He was glad he'd made the time to visit Pierka and her baby.
"Of course," she smiled. She was a bit amazed that he'd stayed as long
as he had with his busy schedule. "Thank you for visiting," she said
sincerely.
