Walking into his office without knocking or anything else, Rhosyn walked up
to her Weyrleader and remained standing while he was sitting, obviously
looking over some hides. "I just received word that Hygalia is leaving
Dragonsfall for some Weyr up north." Her eyes shown with her anger and her
incredulity at such a thing. "And when Genith just flew, no less. Please tell me it's
all wherry shite."
She didn't understand how or why someone would do that. With Traelyn, there
had been some sort of illness. With Janani, it had likely been issues with N'vanik,
though Rhosyn hadn't understood that either. But Hygalia? As far as she
knew, G'nir hadn't done anything. Her hazel eyes flashed and she waited for him to
answer her, almost as if she dared him to.
"I can't," he said simply.
She was quiet as if she hadn't heard him right and then she deflated,
plopping into the chair and looking very tired. "Does no one have a sense of
duty anymore? As Weyrwomen we have a duty to our Weyrs especially in a Pass. What the
shells is so hard about just staying? It's hard to fight thread and lay eggs
and breed new riders when everything is always changing so much. We are supposed
to be the ones that don't change. We stay and die old-the ones that always
remain."
Something in her eyes was asking him to make sense of this for her. Rhosyn
could not comprehend up and leaving her Weyr and her people despite so many things
pulling her in other directions. And with so many things changing in her own life-the
permanency of her home and her position was something she clung to.
"I understand what you're saying, but clearly Hygalia has made her mind up
to go." It seemed to him like the goldrider had never truly settled in at
Dragonsfall and made it her home. "There's no way to know what someone is
thinking and feeling about these things."
"I just...we depend on Dragonsfall to a point since we work with them and
not knowing what's going to happen there makes me nervous." She shrugged
and ran a hand up her leg, picking at the trousers. "Maybe we should let
G'nir know he has our support if he needs to lean on someone." Not that
River Bluff was in a position of strength exactly, what with only two breeding
golds in a Pass, but at least they weren't in such a state of transition. What a
mess.
"I understand their Weyrwoman second is more than capable."
"Right but I understand it's not just that. They're losing wingleaders and
other senior riders. In a time when they can't exactly afford to lose them."
She leaned back in the chair and sighed. "So..they came to them asking for
people. Did they come to us?" If they had, she hadn't heard about it but
then she started thinking and waited for his answer.
"Not that I've heard yet." K'sedel sat back in his chair. "We need to give
them a day or so to rejig their wings how they want, G'nir is experienced
enough to do that."
She was thankful for that. She didn't want to lose any of her folk, not that
they could really anyway-not in a Pass. "Those eggs...." That was the crux
of it. She could understand leaving, but leaving after the eggs were Hatched
at the rightful Weyr. To her, it was almost like stealing their future. Shaking her
head, she decided it was really all she could say. There was nothing else
she could do about it. "Well if they do, tell them no."
An eyebrow quirked at that. "It isn't just your decision on that you know."
"With our numbers we are finally just getting to a little over okay. We are
not comfortable enough to be sparing many riders to other places, especially
up north where they have plenty more riders than we have and less land to
cover." She knew this from the Records with clutch counts and weyrling
survival rates and Fall casualties that she recorded. Not that he didn't but this wasn't
the time for some sort of pecking order business. She was just stating the
obvious, after all. "I'm not sure if Dragonsfall is either, but that's their
business."
"If someone is desperate to go, we may not be able to physically stop them,
you know that."
"Aye but it would be harder for them if you didn't approve the transfer. Though
when it came down to it, disobeying your Weyrleaders is a serious matter and
we couldn't deal with it lightly. Orlaith could easily enforce that if needed."
No, deserters lost all respect in her eyes. Throwing aside your duty to your
Weyr in any fashion was shame to a dragonrider, for good reason. "Did the
Lord Holders ever decide what to do about Morin?" That was another headache. At least
they could depend on the tithes coming in, but if something wasn't done, Rhosyn knew it
could cause issues. People coming out of the woodwork to claim the right to Hold could
lead to a fight. The Weyr could be forced to intervene if so, though they generally stayed out
of holder business.
"There's to a be a conclave at the end of this month," K'sedel said. "I'd
expect Bryvin to have a strong chance, I believe he's related to the blood
somehow, and unless there was another designated heir..."
"Hmmm...the steward? Wasn't he related to the Steward at Amber Hills?
So could there be more than one?" Rhosyn didn't keep track of all that, but
holders tended to have large families and there were usually more of them
around.
"I don't know," admitted K'sedel. "There is a connection somewhere, and if
it isn't him, then I'd imagine that there is some other younger son of a
Lord who's ambitious enough to put his name forward."
"Of course there would be. I just hope whoever it is is easy enough to work
with. Fighting for Searches and tithes and everything else is not something
else we need." Realizing that was really all she had to talk about and knowing
there was truth behind the rumor, Rhosyn just wanted to go and be quiet
somewhere. Maybe she could work on some hides down at the beach.
"Well keep me posted. I think I'm going to disappear for the rest of the
day. If I'm needed, just tell Orlaith."
"I'll have Nikornath speak to her if I need you."
