Description: The new Weyrwoman arrives at Dragonsfall.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 7, day 15 of Turn 7
Saibra's teeth chattered as they appeared in the air above
Dragonsfall. The air was warmer than /between/ had been, but still by
no means was it the warmth that she was accustomed to at Dolphin Cove.
She had lived her entire life at beachy, warm Weyrs, and now the
frigidness of Dragonsfall was breath-taking. Also strapped to her
dragon, in front of her, were her daughter, Saidrene, and her son, Kaibren.
Chioneth bugled a welcome to her new Weyr, saluting Onnyth first,
before warbling a greeting to Nirreth. The gold landed in the Weyrbowl
in front of the upper most cliff level where the Weyrleaders weyrs
were typically located.
"Here we are." She announced to the children. Saidrene was still
seething over what she had walked in on the night before, but she had
agreed to come, even after being given the option of staying at
Dolphin Cove.
Hearing the welcoming bugle from Nirreth, G'nir stepped out to the
ledge to greet the Weyr's new goldrider. He was still shocked by
Hygalia's decision. Not only did she leave him, she also took the eggs
Nirreth had sired with her. There was no way G'nir would go back to
the North. He would not take the risk of losing his position as
Weyrleader. Of course, he risked losing it every time the senior gold
Rose. Besides, he had finally started feeling like he _belonged_ to
Dragonsfall Weyr.
"Welcome to Dragonsfall Weyr, Lady Saibra. I'm grateful of your prompt
response for my call for aid." He didn't miss the children with her.
Saibra helped Kaibren to the ground first and then jumped down, "It is
a pleasure, Weyrleader." She smiled and gave a nod. At least the
Dragonsfall Weyrleader was easy on the eyes, she decided.
"Children, this is Weyrleader G'nir. Weyrleader, these are my
children, Saidrene and Kaibren." She herded them forward.
"Saidrene, Kaibren, it's a pleasure to meet you. Welcome," G'nir
greeted them. He was showing off his best Lordly manners.
Even though Saidrene wanted no part to do with her mother, she did
curtsy gracefully to the Weyrleader, "A pleasure." She murmured
softly. When she stood, she spared just a glance for her mother, "I am
going to find the Candidate barracks." And walked off.
Saibra watched her daughter go, her expression neutral, before she
smiled down at Kaibren, "Go on, my little explorer, I will find you in
a bit after I have talked with Weyrleader G'nir."
Kaibren's expression lit and he darted off ready for the adventure
that a new location brought.
"I am sorry to hear about Hygalia's sudden departure. That must have
been hard on the Weyr." Saibra said, turning back to G'nir.
"It was," G'nir replied. "We're shocked. Especially with Genith
gravid. Now, Hygalia's old weyr is ready for you to move in. She took
all her personal belongings with her, so all there's left is basic
furniture. Headwoman or one of her assistants can help you to get it
fully furnished."
Saibra was surprised by the information that Genith had been gravid
when they left. What on Pern had possessed Hygalia to leave a
perfectly well-established Weyr? She didn't know, but she planned on
making the best of the situation, "And what about the Weyr's other
goldrider?"
"There's Teseada, she's been acting as wingleader now. However, she's
only 21 Turns old..." G'nir didn't have to tell her what it meant.
Teseada was just too young to lead a Weyr. "And we have weyrling gold
too, Genna and Lissath. They need training from a more experienced
goldrider."
"Yes, that is young, close in age to Meledei from Dolphin Cove."
Saibra nodded, thinking about the situation. For once in her life
_she_ was the most senior goldrider, and the other two would be
looking to her for guidance and advice. That was a large order to
fill. She adjusted the collar on her coat, "Perhaps we could continue
this conversation inside? I am afraid I am not use to the cold."
"Of course. I can order refreshments. Hot klah might be the thing,"
G'nir replied and gestured her to precede him to indoors.
"So did you and Hygalia have any Weyr projects that you were working
on that I should be aware of?" Saibra asked as they entered the warmth
of the Weyr.
G'nir sent the order for klah before he replied to her question. "Yes,
in fact we had. After Lissath Hatched, we started to count empty weyrs
and realized we don't have that many of them. If Genna and Lissath
don't transfer straight after graduating, for the first time in who
knows how many turns, Dragonsfall will have _three_ mature, clutching
queens. We will run out of room soon. So, we've started to do some
preliminary research for ways to enlarge the Weyr."
Saibra looked up as a drudge brought them a steaming pitcher of klah
and a couple of cups. **Fast service.** She thought as she helped
herself to a cup and gingerly sipped at the hot liquid, "That sounds
like a strong idea." She agreed, but didn't voice that it would
probably only be necessary _if_ Genna and Lissath did remain with them
at Dragonsfall past Weyrlinghood. Still, a unifying project for the
Weyr was always good and would show that the Weyrleaders were a
connected team working towards the betterment of the Weyr.
"How long have you been Weyrleader, G'nir?" She asked.
"Almost two Turns now," G'nir replied.
So he had most likely gained favor among the Dragonsfall residents.
Senior Gold flights could be swayed by the favor of those in the Weyr.
If the dragonriders all favored the same bronzerider he had a bigger
chance of flying the Queen. It didn't work all the time, of course,
but it was something to consider nonetheless.
"Here's to making it three." Saibra lifted her cup of klah with a
friendly smile. G'nir had a good reputation and with the Senior
Weyrwoman leaving, Saibra felt that the last thing the Weyr needed was
to also change Weyrleaders. On her part, she would do everything she
could to influence Chioneth in Nirreth's direction.... Not that the
bronze needed it, if rumors were true, because he was quite apt at
winning flights.
"Thank you. Here's for successful working together," G'nir replied
with his own klah cup. At least the first impression of her was that
she was competent.
