Y'gel

Y'gel

She had returned to full duties and found herself in her office again.
It was odd really, but at least this was familiar. First thing had
been to organize paperwork and go through both Tsaera's and Lenala's
reports. Then she tried to get her schedule together. After a meeting
with Solieira, she realized at some point it would be time to talk to
Y'gel. Rhosyn was not looking forward to that.

Y'gel presented himself at the usual time for their weekly update. It
was the first time he'd spoken to Rhosyn alone since before she'd had
the baby. "Hello," he called with a smile as he knocked on the door
frame. "Welcome back."

She didn't smile but she didn't really look angry either. She just looked
uncomfortable, but that could have been due to so many things. Catching
up, getting used to working again, a bad omelet that morning all could
have been good reasons. The real reason, though, was that in a fundamental
way-she had lost some of her trust in this man. It didn't make sense since
she had trusted him with the care of her child, but it was true. "Good
afternoon, Y'gel." She gestured for him to sit even as she shuffled things
around on her desk.

Y'gel took that as an invitation to sit and put his hides on the desk
as he did so. "Feel like you're getting back into the swing of things
yet?"

Not a fan of small talk, the goldrider really just wanted to get down
to business and get him out of her office. Still, she had to be
professional. She had to work with him. "There's a lot to do but it's
better than having nothing. And once I get caught up, it'll be like it
was before." Better to have something to do than having time to think
about the state her life was in. "And how is my daughter?"

"She has her nights and days mixed up," he chuckled. "But I'm sure
Briata will handle it just fine." Personally, he enjoyed having a
little baby girl to hold again.

"Oh sure." **Much better than I would have** Rhosyn thought about that
for a moment and then decided to just put the question out there. "So when
are you going to be a grandfather?"

"Within the month if I'm counting correctly," he said carefully. "But
things could go south if she finds out about... well the father of her
baby was taken by Thread." Somehow Rhosyn didn't really seem like
herself and he couldn't put his finger on why. "Are you alright?"

It was slow in coming but then it clicked. "The father of her baby...it
was Z'an wasn't it?" As a goldrider she knew that riders died. Especially
during a Pass. But that brownrider had been quite fun and something about
him..such a shame. She got quiet for a few moments. "No. I'm not. I just
finished having a baby by myself, after having to figure out who the shells
was going to help me when my help got pregnant and then up and left me,
going to another Weyr without so much as a Weyrwoman-I'd like to transfer..."

And of course she knew he had taken her without saying anything or asking.
Her look told him so. "And come to find out after having this baby, the
person I had it for doesn't care half as much for me as I do about them."
She stood up and tried to pull on the well of anger, disappointment, and
hurt to give her strength. She was not going to fall apart now. Fortunately,
Orlaith's strength was more than enough for her to draw from. "Oh but at
least I don't have to worry about my
baby, since I can count on Briata." Which she really was thankful for.

"It was," he said slowly. "She was a Candidate Rhosyn, not a rider and
didn't need to apply to the Weyrleaders to go as long as she could
obtain transportation. She's my daughter and wanted to try for the
gold egg." He knew she was possessive and might feel betrayed but his
first loyalty in that case was to his girl. "She asked me to take her.
I assumed she'd talked to you. If she didn't I'm sorry."

"Yes," he nodded at her comments about the Dolphin Cove Weyrleader.
"You have bigger things to think about than that a sixteen turn girl
who forgot to say goodbye." He took her rising to mean he was
dismissed and though he didn't really think their business concluded
he stood as well.

"I'm sure you can count on Briata," he said with a short bow. "If
there is nothing further," he turned to leave.

None of the injuries or anything of that nature had been discussed, but
she could figure it out well enough from his reports. There were no
glaring issues to be addressed. So she felt like maybe it was better for
him to go anyway.

"She promised me that she would help me. I counted on her." **Z'an promised
me he wouldn't threaten her future and yet he did. She could die just as
easily as some hold girl and now kill a dragon as well.** "And instead of
doing her duty, she chose something else. I just...no one ever lives up to
their promises." That was just something she was going to have to accept.
She needed to become more like she used to be-more self reliant. "In future,
though, when I assign a candidate a specific duty-I'd appreciate notice
before said candidate disappears from my Weyr. At least that way I can find
someone else to do it." She was done. She was done with all of it.

Sitting back down in her chair, she looked quite tired and small. She'd lost
some of the baby weight finally but working and trying to get back into sleeping
like a normal person was taking its toll. And then she had to deal with so many
changes on top of it. Besides that, it seemed like everyone around her besides
maybe Reeva had lost their minds.

**Whatever makes you feel better,** he thought rather uncharitably,
and with a short bow he was gone.
