A somber mood hovered over the Weyr at the news of Z'an's death. He
had been such a well liked brownrider, no one could resist his
friendly face and charm. And now... He was gone. The finality of it
brought tears to Jeyme's eyes.
When D'hol came in that evening she looked up at him in concern.
Knowing how the death of his wingrider must have affected him.
"Hey." She said softly.
D'hol's face was strained. Releasing Z'an's body into /between/ had
been difficult for both himself and Yumath, but he had given his word.
He had yet to speak to the new Headwoman about arranging to have the
man's things sent to this Gelira, but there would be time enough the
next day.
Jeyme's soft voice drew him away from his somber thoughts. "You made
it through Fall alright?" He'd not had time to check on her
afterwards.
"Yes." Jeyme answered. The Queen's Wing had her running very safe, low
formations because of her pregnancy, so generally she was safe beneath
the protection of the other Wings. She went to him, her hands coming
to rest on the front of his tunic as she looked up at him, "How are
you?"
His hands went to her waist and he drew her close to him in an
embrace. Even though he knew that she was safe in the wing, he felt
the urge just to hold her to him. He stroked her hair slowly, resting
his cheek against her brow. "I've been better. I've lost wingmates
before, but its never easy."
Jeyme closed her eyes, enjoying the comfort that her weyrmate's solid
embrace gave her. It very easily good have been D'hol instead of Z'an.
There was always that chance. She could not fathom life without him.
"I hate that he outlived his dragon. I can't imagine...." She trailed off.
"Healers keep the mercy draught for a reason, Jeyme. So riders don't
have to live with it. It's what Z'an chose and I can't fault him for
it. I would have done the same." He pressed a kiss to her brow and
took a long breath. "I still have to give a report to N'vanik."
Her throat became suspiciously dry at the mention of Z'an choosing
death. It was such an awful, awful way for a good man to die. Jeyme
sniffled, and wiped any moisture around her eyes on the back of her
hand. "Tonight?"
"Yes. Tonight." He pulled away just enough to see her face and cupped
her cheeks in his hands before kissing each eyelid. The taste of her
tears was bitter on his lips. "Duty trumps exhaustion, Jeyme. N'vanik
will need to know exactly what happened." He brought her back against
his chest. "But after I'm done, I'll be home immediately."
Jeyme nodded against his chest, knowing that he was right and that
N'vanik was probably waiting on him. There was no doubt in her mind
how exhausted D'hol had to be, emotionally as well as physically, "Do
you want me to get you any food or anything for when you get back?"
He was quiet for a moment before he replied. "I'm not really hungry,
Jeyme. All I want this evening is a long bath and a night with you in
my arms." His arms tightened around her briefly before relaxing. He
wasn't thinking of bedding her; he simply wanted to keep her close.
"I will be waiting then." Jeyme went up and kissed his cheek. She gave
his arm a squeeze of support.
He nodded and ran a hand through his already mussed hair. "I'll be
back as soon as I can."
