N'vanik

Chaysea had not had many encounters with the Weyrleader since she had
been interviewed for the position, but she needed to speak with the
man on behalf of Judassa. She hated to think that there was someone in
the Weyr that would violate a woman in such a way, but she knew they
were at the Hold and Weyr alike.

Arriving outside of N'vanik's office door she knocked and waited for a response.

"Come in!" He called. "Ah, Chaysea." He smiled. "Is there something you need?"

"Weyrleader," she greeted with a light smile. It was easy to like
N'vanik, she had decided. Most people seemed to. Stepping into his
office she closed the door behind her so that they could talk in
privacy, "I was wondering if I might have a moment to talk with you
about one of your dragonriders?"

"Of couse." From her tone he suspected it wasn't anything good.
"Please, have a seat."

"Last night a young bronzerider showed up at my door, I'lan," she
supplied his name as she sat down, "and he had a woman with him. She
had apparently been..." Chaysea flicked her fingers, "violated in the
back corridors... I'lan was kind enough to spare her his shirt so that
she could cover up. I gave her a room, and she's had experiencing
working with the midwives, so that is all set. Now she's afraid,
though, to walk the Weyr by herself. She didn't get a good look at her
attacker, so really, he could be anyone. I was wondering if you might
give permission for I'lan to take some of his time to escort her
around the Weyr. I think being the one that found her has made I'lan
somewhat of a 'safe person' for her."

The Weyrleader's expression grew very dark. "Violated? So there's a
rapist in my Weyr." There were people like that all over, of course,
but it made him sick to know there was one in his home. "Are you sure
she wouldn't be able to identify him? I could have her look at every
man in the Weyr until she finds him." And then they could get rid of
the animal.

The Headwoman shook her head, "I pressed her on the matter and she
said it was too dark in the corridor to see his face properly. Beyond
that, she come from the Hold so she is so embarrassed and ashamed that
she doesn't even want to really talk about it."

"Hm." N'vanik took a breath. "Well, you can tell her I don't tolerate
that in my Weyr and if we ever do find him, he'll be _severely_
punished. And let her know she can have whatever she thinks will help
her. I can't spare I'lan from drills or 'Fall, but I'll take him off
the duty roster so he can escort her the rest of the time. If she
needs to see a mindhealer, or anything else, all she has to do is
ask." He was already thinking of asking one of the harpers to look
into the matter quietly. Search through transfer records, ask some
discrete questions.

Chaysea nodded in agreement, "Thank you, Weyrleader, it will put her
mind at rest knowing that I'lan can accompany her around the Weyr."
She was glad to see that the leader of Dolphin Cove took such an
aggressive stance against a man that might harm a woman. It wasn't
that way in a lot of Holds across Pern.

"Is she a recent arrival?"

"Yes, sir." Chaysea nodded.

He leaned back, nodding to himself. "If she wants to visit home, or
invite someone here -- family, a friend-- let her know I'd be happy to
arrange transport."

Chaysea felt that was very generous of the Weyrleader and it just made
her like N'vanik that much more, "I will let her know. That also
reminds me, I did not bring everything to the Weyr when I came because
it was a trial position. Could I arrange a ride back to the Vintner
Hall for the rest of my things?"

"Of course. And if you'd like to visit anyone there, or have a friend
visit you here, just ask. One of the many benefits of your new
position." He smiled, relieved to have something nice to talk about.

"Thank you, Weyrleader, I appreciate it." Chaysea smiled and then
stood, "I suppose I will leave you to your work now."

"Thank you for bringing this to me." Disturbing as it was, it was
better to know than not.
