R'enh

R'enh

It was late, the middle of the night, with only one fire left burning
in the Dining Cavern. The kitchen workers had all retired for the
evening except for a drudge here or there that was still cleaning. The
Weyr was basically asleep, and Chaysea was glad. The Headwoman sat in
a corner of the Dining Cavern by herself, her head braced back against
the wall, her feet up in a nearby chair. It had been a long sevenday.

**Only _seven_ days?** It had felt like an eternity. She had known
that there would be a huge learning curve when coming to the Weyr
but... It was a _major_ learning curve.

R'enh had insomnia. He'd tried to sleep and couldn't relax enough
after the day he'd had. The wing's drills hadn't gone well and N'vanik
was in a mood about the whole thing. He'd worked late trying to
reorganize the section of the wing that had caused the trouble.
Finally throwing down the hides he'd tried to crawl into bed, but
sleep hadn't come. So he threw a plain tunic over his sleeping
trousers and shoved his feet in to some slippers.

With most baking done at night he was hoping for some hot bread and
fresh klah to help him wind down. Coming out of the kitchen's after
bussing a pretty baker he had some hot bread slathered with butter and
a mug in the other hand. He had the bread up to his mouth when he saw
the woman sitting there in the semi dark. He walked up to her
chewing.

"Hello there," he said still chewing. "Want some? It's fresh."

Chaysea was still trying to get use to the way men felt free to
approach a woman for conversation. The rules of etiquette in the Hold
were so different. Not that she minded, she had found most of the men
around the Weyr to be pretty polite, so far, "No thank you." She held
up a hand. She was too tired to eat.

"Mind if I sit?" He thought he'd seen her before but wasn't quite sure.

The woman sat up a little straighter in her seat, pulling her feet
down from the other chair, "Not at all." She couldn't think of why the
man would want to talk to her, but maybe there was something he needed
for his weyr.

He pulled out the chair and slid into the seat placing his mug on the
table he reached out a hand. "I'm R'enh," he smiled. "I don't believe
we've met." With only about a thousand people in the Weyr he knew the
faces so he could spot a new one. Let alone a pretty one.

Chaysea reached out and shook the man's hand, "I am Chaysea, and no, I
don't believe we have." She had seen a lot of new faces, but she was
fairly certain that this R'enh fellow had the sort of good looks that
she would remember.

"Are you newly come to the Weyr, or have I been remiss and overlooked
a beauty like you?" R'enh was truly interested in new people beyond
the fact that she was obviously attractive. "What brought you here?"

"Oh, I haven't been here long," Chaysea mentally told her cheeks not
to flush over the "beauty" comment. "I am your Headwoman, well, on a
trial basis."

"Oh," he smiled. "A good woman to know!" He broke off another piece of
the bread. "I'm sure my son will be on your radar soon enough," he
smiled and popped the piece of bread into his mouth.

Chaysea arched an eyebrow at that bit of information, "Uh oh, is that
a good thing or bad?" She smiled a bit.

"Depends," he grinned. "He's an active preteen if you know how they
can be. I think he's more energy than malice." R'enh shrugged.

"Energy is fine, that I can handle." Chaysea hated to see malice out
of youngsters, but she had seen it at the Hall so she had no doubt
that it was also present at the Weyr.

"Good," he chuckled. "I'm sure you'll have your hands full with this
pack of brats. We had a tunnel snake infestation a while back and he
built his own snare. Pretty ingenious."

Chaysea hoped she would never have to deal with a tunnelsnake, but
knew the probability of that was unlikely, "How long have you been at
Dolphin Cove?" She asked the bronzerider.

"About a turn and a half," he said. "I came in as a transfer from
Vista Point Weyr. All in all it was a great decision."

"I am hoping my decision to leave the Vintner Hall will have similar
results. Although, so far, I am really liking the Weyr, as different
as it is." Chaysea tried to take the things about the Weyr that
shocked her and look at them as an adventure.

"Are you Hall bred then?" R'enh always found it interesting when he
met people new to the Weyr and it's rather loose interpretation of
morals.

Chaysea picked at a splinter that was hanging from the wooden table,
"Hm, yes, I was born at the Hold, and then became the Hall's Headwoman
when my husband passed away."

"I'm sorry," he was immediately concerned for the woman. While it was
true that many marriages were arranged, he also knew it had to have
been hard for her to move to something so vastly different to her
experience as the Weyr. "You're very brave," he added admiringly.

The Headwoman gave a very lady like, polite chuckle as she shook her
head, "Brave? I don't know about that. I have felt out of place since
the moment I arrived, and like I have been scrambling around like a
headless wherry. Still, it is a step up from the daily humdrum of the
Hall."

"Yes, well..." he could certainly understand her discomfort. He'd had
his own bouts with it when he came from the smith hall. "Don't go out
in the bowl on a hot day."

Chaysea held up a hand, her eyes sliding closed as she shook her head,
"Too late, Weyrsecond, I made that mistake the other day and ended up
having a very interesting conversation with Brownrider Z'an."

R'enh chuckled. He hadn't thought she knew who he was and had been
rather conservative in his dealings with her knowing newly arrived
women were many times holdbred. In the semidark of the cavern at night
her knots were unclear though they were clearly not green. "I'm sure
you did," he flashed her the feral grin that melted most feminine
hearts and winked.

Chaysea was no exception, she nearly swallowed her tongue when the man
smiled. How did women live at the Weyr and not feel constantly like
putty around all of this good looking men? "Yes well, it is quite
clearly unfair to try and have a conversation with someone who is
naked because who can concentrate on anything else?" She shook her
head. Her memory liked to flash up a very detailed rememberance of the
way Z'an had looked that day.

"Well," his eyes twinkled. He hadn't missed the effect of his smile.
"I'd hate it if you were unable to cope with naked men, or women for
that matter. I'd be happy to help if you wanted to practice."

This brought color to the woman's cheeks but she did laugh softly, "A
very tempting offer, my lord, but I believe I would be afraid of
making a fool of myself."

"No pressure, no worries, and no touching." He was serious about that
part given the pretty flush on her cheeks. "Just looking, and I
promise not to ask for my own look at your... charms."

Chaysea met his eyes, "Just.... Look at you?"

"Mmhmm," he leaned his chin on his hand with his index finger over his
lips. She was intrigued he could tell but was she brave enough to take
a long good look. All male and in his prime R'enh wasn't afraid of
scrutiny. He wasn't even concerned about the large scar running down
his thigh or the missing little finger on one hand. He'd won those
injuries in a fair fight with Thread along with so many other smaller
injuries.

She adverted her eyes as she took a moment to think of this
dragonrider's proposition. If she wanted the Weyrwoman to keep her as
the Headwoman then she was going to have to learn to fit in properly,
"Okay. I _do_ want to fit in here."

He was mature enough not to smirk but take this for what it was...
simple exploration. "So then the next question is where would make you
most comfortable."

"I am rather sure I will be completely uncomfortable _anywhere_. You
are the one getting unclothed after all." Chaysea said, smiling.

"My Weyr then?"

Chaysea knew that was her moment, to truly go through with this, or to
back out. Licking her lips, she nodded, "Sounds perfect."
