R'enh saw Cosani not too far off and approached from behind so she
wouldn't see him coming. "Happy Birthingday," he said a in low voice
and an arm reached around her with a small pretty package.
She startled at the unexpected voice. Grabbing the package, she turned
to see who it was. "R'enh!" A smile spread across her face. "I can't
believe you remembered." It warmed her all the way down to her toes.
"Of course I remembered," he smiled. He'd actually written it down on
a hide he kept especially for the purpose. He liked crafting things
especially pretty things for special young ladies.
Her stomach went all fluttery and she opened the package. "Oh," she
gasped. It was a beautiful gold cuff bracelet and she stared at it for
a moment before slipping it on. "Thank you!" Cosani threw her arms
around his neck and kissed him. It had to mean something that he
remembered, that he'd give her such a lovely gift.
R'enh laughed and swung her around in a circle. He was very happy his
little gift had gone over so well. "I'm glad you like it," he grinned.
"It's beautiful." She admired it on her wrist. "Did you make it?"
"Yes, I did," he chuckled. "Just for you." He cocked his head to look
at it on her arm. "It looks very nice on you."
To have him think about her that much... "I'll wear it all the time."
He shook his head, "You don't have to do that." But it did please him
that she liked the bracelet that much. "Do you have plans for this
evening?"
"I think I do now," she said with a knowing grin.
"Is there any place special you'd like to go," he asked with an answering grin.
Her heart pounded so hard she wondered if he might be able to hear it.
"Surprise me."
"Alright," he smiled. "Come with me."

R'enh sat back with his glass of wine and just took in the view of the
sunset from the top of the cliff overlooking the beautiful bay. The
tiny inn was perfectly situated for a romantic getaway and if there
was anything he knew about Cosani, she was a romantic at heart. She
just didn't abide fools. "Thank you," he said to the servers who made
themselves unobtrusive. "How do you like it?"
"It's beautiful." She'd heard girls talking about romantic dinners,
dreaming of handsome men taking them somewhere special. Cosani thought
it was sappy... but she couldn't help enjoying it anyway. "Thank you,
R'enh." She sipped her wine and smiled at him. A handsome bronzerider,
just like a harper's tale.
"Just a nice picture for your memories of your birthday," he shrugged.
"We can make some more memories later," he winked.
Heat pooled low in her belly. "Oh, yes." She took a breath and decided
to plunge on. "And maybe we could talk. Privately. About...
something." Faranth, why had she said anything? She regretted the
words as soon as they were out of her mouth. What if she was ruining
her own birthingday?
His eyes crinkled with amusement and one corner of his mouth lifted.
"Sure," he wasn't opposed to talking, in fact he was pretty much an
open book to anyone who asked. He reached for the wine bottle and held
it toward her glass to top it off.
When her glass was full again, she took a long sip. "Could we... go
for a walk or something?" The servers were good at fading into the
background, but she knew they were there.
"Of course," he smiled. "We probably shouldn't go far as it will be
dark soon." The sky was full of color and he could hear the waves
crashing below.
She shook her head. "Just a short walk." She stood, trying to calm her
stomach. The wine and food were sloshing around.
R'enh tossed off the last of his wine and stood. "Lets go," he said
reaching for her hand. "I think I see a path over there."
For a while all she could do was walk in silence. It wasn't too late,
she could just make something up. But then she'd just keep thinking
about it and Cosani wondered if that might be worse than anything he
might say. Better to have it in the open, better to know. "So, um, I
think I might... like you."
A small smile curved the corner of his mouth but he knew Cosani. Knew
her well enough to understand how big it was for her to say what she
had. He turned to face her with a serious expression in his normally
laughing eyes. "Come here," he said and wrapped his arms around her.
He didn't want to do anything to ruin her birthingday and he really
did care how she felt. "I like you too beautiful," he said keeping the
'but' out of his voice.
"I mean more than just friends, or bedmates, or whatever you call
this." She looked down and took a deep breath. Gathering her courage,
she met his gaze. "I'm not asking you for anything. I don't want
things to change. I just want you to know... that you're special." No
one else made her feel like this.
He smiled and kept his arms loosely around her. "You're very special
too Cosani," he said. "And I'm not just saying that because you just
did. You're one of my favorite people. I hope you know that." He
reached up and tucked a few strands of hair behind her ear and then
lowered his head to take gentle possession of her lips.
She leaned into this kiss, deepening it. He hadn't rejected her,
hadn't pushed for more. R'enh really was perfect. The pressure in her
chest and the nervous flutter of her stomach eased.
His hands moved down her back and pulled her closer then hard against
him and enfolded her bending her backwards in the process. "Ah
Cosani," he said as he pulled back. "I have a room back at the inn."
Her mouth turned up in a very pleased smirk. "Good."
