Y'gel

Y'gel

"Master Y'gel? Do you have a moment?" Deajul didn't want to interrupt the man but needed some advice.

"I do," Y'gel looked up from the hide he was working on and waved the young
man in. "Have a seat and tell me what's on your mind."

Deajul sighed as he took a seat, he didn't like to admit that me might not
impress but it was something he had to face. "I was wondering, you know I
love learning about dragon healing, but what if I don't impress. I mean I've
been standing since I was twelve, it's been three turns and I'm still a candidate."

Y'gel smiled at the young man. "You still have plenty of time to Impress. So
don't worry about it. Aughashyth didn't find me on the Sands until I was
twenty."

"When did you start standing, Sir?" **Another five turn, I'll go mad!** he
thought desperately.

"Oh I didn't come to the Weyr until I was a journeyman healer. I was
eighteen turns."

Deajul couldn't help his sigh of relief at the news. "I'm thinking that I
should still consider what if, I want it to be something involved with
healing."

"There will be time enough to consider that if it happens. Til then, do as
you're doing and learn everything you can about dragonhealing." Y'gel had
had this talk before, many times over the turns. "You still have lots to
learn."

"I know I do sir. I simply wanted to ask. Did you think you would impress or
did Aughashyth catch you off guard?" he often wondered about crafters who
were posted to the Weyr.

"Actually," Y'gel half smiled at the memory. "I was interested in dragons,
their anatomy fascinated me. I only stood because I could as a resident of
the Weyr at the time. One of the other candidates was fairly badly mauled by
one of the dragonets who walked over him to get to his lifemate so I bent to
attend him. I was the nearest healer you see," he chuckled. Then his eyes
softened. "Then I saw another one making a straight line toward us and tried
to protect the downed kid only to have Aug stop and ask me why I was playing
with someone when I should be feeding him."

"Wow, he thought you were playing with the other candidate? How cute. Was he
okay?" the boy asked.

Y'gel nodded. "He was hurt but all thought about that went away when a
pretty little green began mewling over his injuries. I let the weyrling
assistants take care of them and went off with Aug to find the food. I don't
think I really expected to Impress that day but it was wonderful."

"Sounds like it. I hope I find out for myself soon, minus getting walked on
of course."

"You just do what your weyrlingstaff tells you and I'm sure your lifemate
will find you on the Sands." Y'gel clapped the young man on shoulder and
gave it a friendly squeeze.
