Riveenata spotted Bahji on her way towards a bathing pool - or maybe
it was towards the Dining Cavern. "Hey," she called. "It's Riven, on
your left."
Bahji stopped at the voice and turned her head towards it, a slight
smile lifting her lips. "Hey...how are you doing?"
"I'm okay." There'd been some rough days...and a few better ones, as
well. "Where were you heading to?"
"The Dining Cavern." She paused and then wrinkled her nose suddenly.
"Or...I was, but now I don't think I will. The thought of food
suddenly turns my stomach." She sighed and shrugged. "No matter." She
gave Riveenata a lighter smile. "But things are getting better for
you?"
"Oh, that's not good. Normal, of course, but I bet it's unpleasant. My
sister had morning sickness forever, it felt like." She remembered how
funny it had been with a baker unable to stand the sight of food, and
the image gave her a little chuckle.
"I'm sleeping better. And F'lin talked to Lenala and got me in to take
a sneak peek at Vilarth's eggs. I snuck in and visited them once and
so it was nostalgic." He had meant so well with the gesture. Her heart
turned a little at how she'd reacted at the end.
Bahji offered her hand to her friend with a light smile. "Good. I was
worried for you." There was a slight strain around her eyes, but she
kept her smile up.
Riven took the hand and squeezed it. "Besides your stomach, how do you feel?"
Bahji sighed. "Exhausted." She sighed. "Worn out. E'rae didn't take
the news well."
"Oh, no." She winced. "I'm sorry to hear it. You going to be ok?"
Bahji shrugged. "I don't know. K'lvin has been very kind and
supportive, though. He's been like a rock for me."
"That's excellent," Riven said. "It must be really nice to have the
father's support."
"One of them. But.." Bahji sighed. "It may not matter. I'm supposed to
go to the dolphins." She bit her lip. "Reeva thinks its too dangerous
too."
She was torn between pride in her skills and despair that she'd been
right. "Do you want someone with you when you go, as a friend?"
"K'lvin and Reeva will be there. But I'm not giving my child up,
Riven. I won't. I'll do whatever I have to do keep it." She took a
deep breath and shook her head. "Lets talk of something more
pleasant."
"Are you going to the hatching? There's a lot for you to hear there, right?"
Bahji winced and shook her head. "I went to one. You would think that
there would be plenty of me to take in and it would be enjoyable, but
it was too much. " She gave a half smile. "All the sound and the
echoes were just too overwhelming. I'll pass on it."
"With all the humming?" she guessed. "Hopefully I'll still see you at
the feast afterwards. I do love the parties."
She nodded. "Yes. It's very intense and I can't handle too much." She
thought about the next question and blinked. "I think I'll go. I
didn't go to the last one. Don't they have dancing?"
"So much dancing. It's really a celebration. I think they're more fun
than Turnover," Riven said. "And of course the food's top-notch and
there's good music."
Bahji smiled at the thought, her hand absently rubbing at her abdomen.
"Are you going with anyone?"
"I'm going with F'lin, I think. But I definitely want to dance with
K'mai, and I promised Eioval the artist one too."
Bahji's face lightened considerably. "Perhaps I'll be able to have a
dance or two."
"It'll be good fun for everyone." Riven was glad the idea sounded
appealing. "And then I might see about taking a trip outside the Weyr
for a few days, get some fresh air, some space."
Bahji nodded in agreement. "You should get away for a while, I think.
Maybe clear your head." She stroked her skirts. "Sometimes I think
about going home to rest for a while."
"Would they accept you if you did? I know Holds are different about
some things."
"Oh, not to stay. Just for a sevenday, maybe. My family lives outside
of the hold proper, so it wouldn't be as big of an issue." She paused.
Her mother would welcome her, but she had not talked to her father
since the incident months ago. "It would be nice just to spend some
time with them."
"How far is it from here?" Without being able to go /between/, it
might be harder to arrange that.
It's at Sun Stone. It won't be for a while, but it would still be nice
to visit on occasion. I think it's too long to travel without a dragon
going /between/."
"Something to look forward to when you can, then. I've never been to
Sun Stone," she said. "I would love to have seen more places than I
have. It always feels like a bad idea to go to Holds since I'm a woman
crafter..."
"I'm not technically a crafter." Bahji gave a shrug. "Maybe next time
I go, you can come with me just for a few days. You might like it."
"I'd love to go with you. Hopefully the schedules will work out soon."
What a novel experience that would be.
