Yanley

"I've got it," he said and swung his feet to the floor. He'd covered
the path from their bed to the baby's with extra woven mats so they
didn't have to put their feet on cold bare rock if he woke in the
night.

He didn't mind getting up to try and get the little guy back to sleep
in the middle of the night or just change him and fetch him back to
his mother if he needed... "Does he need to eat yet," he asked with a
yawn.

"He just ate two candlemarks ago," Yanley murmured, her head buried in
the pillow.
These nightly wake ups really drained her.

"Okay," he said as he gently picked up the newborn. "go back to sleep
love. I'll take care of him." D'ale walked out into the outer room all
the time bouncing the tiny bundle gently and making shushing noises
until the little guy's tantrum seemed to subside.

"Now what's the problem with you," he smiled and began unwrapping
Daley until he got a strong whiff and chuckled. "Well that would make
anyone cry," he said softly and went to where Yanley had his changing
things so he could change the boys diaper.

Little arms reached for the sky at the touch of chill and the face
screwed up for another protest. "Hey hey," D'ale assured the tike. "It
will be over soon," and sure enough he quickly finished the cleanup
and rewrapped the bundle. Then going to a big comfy chair he proceeded
to rock and pat the little guy back to sleep.

Of course, in the process he himself dozed with the baby securely
propped in his arms.

Thirst and the need to use privy woke Yanley again from her slumber.
When she didn't spot her mate or baby right away, her heart skipped a
beat. She got up in a hurry and looked around. When she did see them,
a soft smile appeared to her face. He had fallen asleep in a chair
with the baby. They looked so cute it made her heart ache with the
love she felt for them.

D'ale woke with a start and the twitch woke Daley who's lip trembled
before he let out a loud cry. "oh sorry," he said with his eyes half
open.

Yanley just smiled and placed a kiss on his cheek. "He's getting
hungry now," she noted and tickled the baby's cheek. The mouth turned
towards her finger, lips making sucking movements.

"Well then," D'ale said. "I think it's your turn then. I don't have
the equipment." He held up the small bundle for her to take.

"If you had, I wouldn't be needed," Yanley said with soft laugh. "Let
me have the chair too," she asked when she got the baby

"_You_ will always be needed," he said as he pushed out of the chair.
"Even when he's grown and gone."

"I hope so. I hate feeling useless and unwanted. That's why I started
to work as Headwoman's assistant," Yanley replied and settled down to
nurse her baby.

He smiled and bent over to kiss her. "Whatever you want to do is fine
with me love," he said. "You have a great many skills that could
benefit the Weyr Milady."

"Thank you," Yanley said with soft smile.

"You're welcome," he smiled down at her. "Are you hungry," he askt. "I
can go down and get us something."

"Not really hungry, thank you. But I could take a drink. Do we have
water?" Yanley replied.

"Sure," he said and went to pour a nice big glass and set it on the
table next to her chair. "There you go," he said softly. "I'm going to
get some more sleep. I've got early drills."

"Thank you, dear. Sleep well," Yanley smiled radiantly.
