Saidrene had just been passing through the kitchens, using it as a
short cut up to the Dining Cavern, when the use of one, solitary word
made her freeze. "Jenackt." She glanced over her shoulder to see two
kitchen workers leaning close together and giggling. Narrowing her
eyes, Saidrene ducked behind a nearby shelf, where she could hear
better.
It only took a couple minutes of eavesdropping for Saidrene to catch
the entire gist of the womens' conversation. Apparently she was _not_
the only one that Jenackt was running around with and using his "sweet
smile" on. Tears scalded her eyes as she stalked away from the
giggling women, unable to bear any more of the tale that they were
recounting.
**Well it is just _stupid_ of you to be hurt, Saidrene!** She scolded
herself as she walked. She had grown up in the Weyr, shards, she even
had a _goldrider_ for a mother, so why should she be surprised that
Jenackt was running around sowing his wild oats _everywhere_,
apparently. **Sleezeball and his stupid SMILE! I otta knock those
pretty teeth right out of his stupidly handsome face!** She fumed.
**He plays that poor little Victim role so well. I am sure ALL the
women eat it up.** Saidrene no longer felt like being around other
people in the Dining Cavern so she veered off course, preferring just
to wander while she tried to cool off.
Jenackt was walking down the hall, purposefully avoiding the kitchens.
The two women he had spent the night with had turned into voracious
whers and had literally tried to drag him back into bed nearly every
night. Shards, it had been fun that one time, but he did need sleep and
he did have studies.
Lost in his own thoughts, he ran right into Saidrene.
Saidrene gave that momentary gasp of "oh! I'm bumped into something!"
but the moment her eyes drew to Jenackt's face her eyebrows came
crashing down, "Oh. It's you."
He stumbled back, reflexes working to catch himself. He recognized the
voice before he saw the face. "Yeah, sorry about that. " He glanced
behind him, worried that his voice might carry to the kitchens.
When he realized no one was coming out, he relaxed and turned back to
Saidrene. And then he saw the look on her face. He frowned. "What?"
Saidrene caught the direction of his glance and if possible her temper
shot up even higher, "Worried about your lovely kitchen ladies? I can
go get them for you if you would like. I know, personally, that they
are just DYING to see more of you!" Her words dripped sarcasm and
anger, a miniature Saibra in the making.
"Faranth, no! They won't leave me alone! I..." His voice trailed off as
he finally picked up on the sarcasm and blinked. She did look like her
mother right now and he didn't know whether or not to be aroused by it,
or outright worried. Judging by her face, he was wagering on worried.
"Uhm...okay...you look like you'd love to thrust a knife into me.
Uhh....what'd I do?"
Saidrene's eyes narrowed to slits, "Don't give me that
innocent-holdless-I-don't-
know-social-cues-look! Did you really think
I would have a smile plastered on my face when I found out that you
were just going around bedding the first person that looked at you? Or
TWO for this matter?!"
He held up his hands and took a step back. "Okay, so what exactly did
I do wrong? " He looked at her, clearly confused by her anger. "I
don't bed everyone! You, and I admit, the kitchen girls, but it was
their idea." He took another step back. "I don't get why you're mad at
me."
"It's just... I thought ...." Saidrene sputtered, color flushing her
cheeks as she pointed a finger at Jenackt, "Oh it doesn't matter what
I thought!" How many times had her mother told her not to get attached
to people? She _knew_ better and had let stars cloud her eyes anyway
into thinking that there was 'something' between her and Jenackt.
Saidrene brushed past Jenackt, she wasn't about to admit to Jenackt
that she had feelings for him, not when he was so clearly clueless as
to what had her upset.
He grabbed her arm as she tried to brush past him, his brow knitted.
He hated not understanding things. "What? What did you think? Shaffit
it all, I can't understand things if people don't explain them
sometimes!" Flustered and knowing she was upset, but not knowing
exactly why, he pushed a hand through his hair. "It's not like I'm not
new to all of this, you know. I don't know how women think!" The last
was absolutely exasperated.
Saidrene turned her head, refusing to let Jenackt see the bleary cloud
of tears in her eyes, "Then maybe you should take a while and think
about it." She pulled her arm from his grasp and hurried away, this
time before he could stop her again.
