N'vanik

N'vanik

The door was only open a crack, but Sh'del wasn't in the mood to be
either polite or official. "N'vanik, what the bloody shards have you
done this time! WHY have you allowed that snotty little shite of a lad
to be a candidate?" That snotty little shite who hadn't
Impressed--surprise surprise--and now could not be found anywhere.

N'vanik arched an eyebrow. "I have my reasons. Is he causing trouble?"

"The word 'trouble' was invented, knowing that he would be coming
along at some point." Sh'del rubbed his eyes with the palms of his
hands, before propping his feet up on N'vanik's desk. "Are we allowed
to drop him off a great death and see if that makes his stubborn head
finally crack?"

The Weyrleader kept his face neutral. "Do I need to talk to him? What
did he do this time?"

"More like what doesn't he do. Stubborn, snotty little brat." Sh'del
sighed heavily and studied his little green flit settling along the
papers on N'vanik's desk. "So you ever going to tell me what his story
is? I feel like I can't help the kid, and I know something's up."

"He'll talk when he's ready to. Hopefully sooner rather than later."
N'vanik wanted Jenackt to start showing a little trust to others at
the Weyr.

"I'm the one that has to deal with this boy every day. That's not
fair, you know."

"It's his story to tell, and I'm going to give him the chance to tell
it his way."

"So what happens if he hurts himself or someone else? You think that's
only fair as well?"

"I'm not saying I'm always right, and I know I'm taking a risk, but I
don't think he'll attack anyone or bully anyone. What we need to watch
for is people provoking him. I doubt he has enough restraint to walk
away if someone threatens violence." N'vanik drummed his fingers on
the desk. "Hmm. We'll need to drill restraint into him if he
Impresses. Hopefully a dragon will mellow him a bit."

"My brown says he lies."

"Yeah, he does." **And so do I,** N'vanik thought. Not nearly as much
as he used to, but there were still things he kept from people, even
friends like Sh'del. "He has serious trust issues and I've told him he
needs to start being more honest. Give him a little more time."

"So what's his real name?" Sh'del raised an eyebrow to N'vanik, not
fooled for one moment that he wasn't being told everything.

"If you have questions, you should ask him."

"Great, maybe I will." Sh'del stood up, feeling huffy, but he couldn't
help it. His friend was keeping secrets from him like he was some
weyrbrat not to be trusted.
