Description: Ninaine informs Benani of the Search
Location: Amber Hills Hold
Date: month 4, day 27 of Turn 7
Ninaine approached the Lady's office and knocked gently. Once her
father had insisted that she accept the Search, overriding her
mother's plans for her future, Ninaine had little choice but to inform
the Lady Holder of the future plans.
"Come in," Benani called then she rose to pour herself some more tea.
Ninaine opened the door and stepped in, dipping a quick curtsey to the
Lady. "Lady Benani. I apologize for interrupting your tea."
"Not at all," Benani motioned the young woman in. She recognized her
sister's maid and though Yanley was now at the Weyr the girl had been
pitching in to make things run more smoothly. "Is there something you
need," she asked after a moment. She didn't seem to be carrying
anything to give a reason for her to be here.
"It is my duty to inform you, Lady, that I have been Searched. My
father wishes me to try my chances at the Weyr." As always Ninaine was
to the polite and to the point. "I hope that this does not cause a
disruption."
"Your father wishes.." Benani said carefully. "And what do you wish,"
she asked. She was certain her husband wouldn't allow Ninaine's father
to force her to go if she didn't wish to do so.
Ninaine tilted her head to the side. "I wish to honor my father, Lady."
"But do you want to go for yourself Ninaine?" Benani was curious more
than anything else. She herself had never wanted to go to the Weyr
other than for the occasional hatching. She much preferred the Hold.
But she realized not all women were like herself in that regard.
Ninaine frowned at the question and stopped to consider it. "I suppose
that it's my duty to go, if I've been Searched. And I would like to
see Lady Yanley again, if I can. I do miss her company and I've no
immediate prospects for marriage, so I'm free to explore that option."
Benani laughed gently. "You sound so business like Ninaine. I'm sure I
would love to see Yanley far more frequently than I can at the moment
but I'll have to be a little patient. Why don't you sit down." she
added.
She had the good grace to flush and took a seat, primly arranging her
skirts around her. "Thank you, Lady. Perhaps I can give her a message
for you?" She paused and then tilted her head as she thought.
"Besides, I don't think I'll be there for long if I don't Impress. I
think it best that I try, though."
"I'll write a letter for you to carry to my sister. When are you
leaving?" Benani didn't like the girl's choice or the fact her father
seemed to be pushing her but she hadn't asked for help to get out of
going so she couldn't stand in her way.
"I'll be happy to take it for you, of course." She then frowned.
"Lady, if I do return, will I still have a place here?"
She took a deep breath and smiled. "If you are careful dear. You can
still have a life at the hold. Though it may not be easy at first.
People sometimes think bad things about girls who have been to the
Weyr." She knew from Yanley's letters some of the things that happened
there. "Talk to Yanley as soon as you can."
Her chin lifted immediately in pride and self-confidence. "I wouldn't
dishonor my family or the hold, Lady. I know what will be expected of
me. " She nodded. "Of course. I'll seek her out immediately. "
"Good," Benani smiled. "Her husb... er... werymate is a wingsecond and
she can take you under her protection while you're there." She was
actually a little relieved at the girl's reaction. "You'll do fine
there Ninaine, and I'll welcome you back should you wish to return to
us."
"Thank you, Lady Benani. That would probably be for the best, then. I
shall follow your advice to the letter."
Benani smiled and stood, the sure sign their interview was over. "I'll
make sure you get my letter to Lady Yanley soon. When was the rider
going to take you to the Weyr?"
Ninaine rose as well. "In two days. Thank you, Lady."
