Talryne

Talryne had just finished a row and stood to stretch, little pops
coming from her back and shoulders. Someone entered the weaving room,
not one of the regulars. "Hi, do you need something?"

Color blossomed on Jeyme's cheeks. This was the first time she had
ever come for knitting supplies for herself. Before that Qorri had
produced the supplies that she needed. With life suitably tame now
that she and D'hol were no longer at odds, she felt more comfortable
taking the time to search out the weavers room and hopefully pick up
some more yarn.

"Uhm,yes, I was just looking for some yarn, actually." She held up her
two knitting needles.

"What type of yarn? And what colors?" Talryne knew where everything was.

"Thick, and do we have in teals and purples?" She asked as she came
toward the young woman, glad that she hadn't been told to leave. Since
she was wasn't technically a part of the weavercraft, Jeyme always
felt shy about entering the weaver's room for supplies.

"Purple for sure, and I think there's teal." Talryne stepped over to
the cabinet that held thicker yarns. "So you're a rider," she said,
noticing the knots.

"Yeah," Jeyme smiled, "just barely." She watched as the other woman
pulled open the cabinet door to reveal spools of yarn, "Oh, I'm Jeyme,
by the way, my green is Quinneth. Sorry, I am still not use to
introducing myself that way."

Talryne's eyes widened a little. "Oh, you're Jeyme. D'hol's weyrmate?"

Jeyme's eyebrows went up, "Uh, yeah. You have heard of me?"

"Yeah, N'vanik... mentioned you." She realized that sounded like they
were gossiping. "Sorry, I'm Talryne. We sort of live together. He
wanted you for his Wing."

"Ah yes. Well, I _wanted_ to be in his Wing. I feel like being put in
the Queens Wing is like being told I am not a very good rider. I mean
that's where the kids go that are too young to go to a fighting wing
or where the pregnant women reside." Jeyme shrugged, although her
irritation was clear.

Talryne pulled out a ball of yarn in a deep shade of purple. "He said
Cyradis snatched you up, so she _wanted_ you. I don't know why, but it
sure didn't sound like a punishment."

Jeyme raised an eyebrow. Cyradis genuinely wanted her in the Queens
Wing? But why? She didn't have anything against Cyradis personally,
only D'hol's infatuation over he. "Well, that's good I guess."

"Is this the color you're looking for? Or something lighter?" Talryne
held up the yarn.

"That's perfect." Jeyme smiled as she looked at the brightly colored
ball of yarn.

She handed it to the rider and turned back to look for teal. "So you
enjoy knitting?"

"I do." The greenrider admitted, "I quit for a while when I first came
to the Weyr but I really enjoy having something to keep my hands busy
when I am in the weyr by myself."

"I went back to knitting for the same reason." Not exactly the same.
It was more than boredom. "I apprenticed because it makes me feel...
like I'm contributing."

Jeyme made a sympathetic noise, "I understand. D'hol is usually busy
with wing business while I am twiddling my thumbs. It's nice to do
something." She bumped elbows with Talryne, "If you ever need company
come find me," she smiled, "I usually end up eating dinner alone at
least three or four nights a sevenday."

Talryne's lips twitched. "That sounds nice. The company, I mean." She
still had to work at socializing, and at least she and Jeyme had an
interest in common. Two, if you counted bronzeriders. "How is D'hol
doing? I heard he's out of the infirmary." N'vanik had been worried
about him.

"He seems to be back to normal. Although I am sure he wouldn't tell me
if he wasn't." She smiled a bit at that as she took the yarn. She
paused for a second, "So you live with N'vanik? You are not
weyrmates?"

"I have my own weyr. We haven't officially weyrmated." Though it
wasn't like there was a ceremony. "But we do live together. Sometimes
I'm at his weyr and sometimes he's at mine." She shrugged. "It works
for us."

Jeyme hadn't heard of such an arrangement before, and curiosity got
the best of her, "Do you love him?"

A slight blush colored her cheeks. It felt strangely private. "Yes."

The greenrider smiled, she hadn't 'girl talked' with someone since she
last saw Arippa, "That's great Talryne. I haven't really been around
the Weyrleader much but he seems like a nice guy."

"He wasn't always," she said with a glint in her eyes. "Though after
my... when I was at my worst, he was so patient and kind." A real
smile brightened her face as she remembered the unexpected sweetness.

Jeyme hugged the balls of yarn to her chest, "That's so nice, Talryne.
Sometimes it takes something... Bad to open up a man's eyes."

"Is that what happened with you and D'hol?" Talryne asked gently.

"Unfortunately. It took a miscarriage for him to ask me to be his
weyrmate and it took me walking out for him to admit he loved me." She
shook her head.

"Oh. I'm sorry." It made her think of the pregnancy she'd ended.

Jeyme gave her shoulders a lift, "It's okay," she looked down at the
yarn, "well, thank you for your help, Talryne."

"You're welcome. And I really think I might take you up on the offer,"
Talryne said. Jeyme seemed nice and she really did need more friends.

"I would like that a lot." To have another friend in the Weyr was a
dream for Jeyme who had very few friends, if any, to speak of,
"Seriously, any time, let me know and I'll be there." She smiled as
she took a backward step, "Thanks for your help with the yarn!"
