Meet & Greet the Weyrwoman

Writers: Sunrose, Yvonne
Date Posted: 28th January 2006

Characters: Illiana, Tsaera
Description: Illiana introduces herself to the Weyrwoman
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 9, day 13 of Turn 3

Illiana looked herself over once more, she wanted to make sure that she was very presentable to the Weyrwoman. The Candidate had heard that Tsaera was quite friendly and enjoyed meeting the new Candidates (hence the reason Illiana stood outside the Weyrwoman's door), and she had a very business like manner. Taking a deep breath she reached up and tapped on the office door with the back of her hand.

"Come in." The Weywoman was seated behind her desk and looking a little tired when Illiana opened the door. Her fingers were stained with ink and there was a slight crease between her brows. Truth be told, she had a bit of a headache and was contemplating a break, so the young woman- no, Crafter by her shoulder knots, was not unwelcome. Just unknown. "Yes?"

"Good afternoon Weyrwoman." Illiana said with a slight bow to the Goldrider. "It was recommended to me that as a Candidate I should come and meet the Weyrwoman." She said with her normal tone, she usually did a good job at covering up that she was nervous.

Tsaera nodded and set aside her ledger. Most of the time she was the one to arrange the meetings, and usually closer to a Hatching, but she admired the girl's initiative. "Whoever gave you that information would be correct. What's your name, Journeywoman, and where are you from?"

"My name is Illiana, and I'm originally from the North, in Keroon territory. I was born and raised in the Beastcraft Hall." She explained. "I hope that I am not out of line coming to you, but I had heard that it would be the proper thing to do, coming here to meet you that is."

"From Keroon?" Tsaera's eyebrows rose in surprise. "While you're certainly welcome here, it's odd that a northern born Crafter would choose to come South. The Craftbans are relaxing, but your knots will be ignored anywhere outside the Weyrs here."

Illiana nodded. "Yes I have seen that, and I was actually Searched from Garnet Valley Hold, I was there visiting as my youngest brother was being espoused." She explained. "And secretly I always wanted to be a Dragonrider, they are just so brave and mysterious in a way." She said with a dreamy look on her face.

For a moment Tsaera sympathized - but only for a moment. The skies were no place for dreamers. "We're people just like everyone else, Illiana. Dragonriding is hard work, and pain, and loss. It's not a Harper's tale, and in a lot of ways Crafting is much easier."

"Oh I don't doubt that, everything has its own challenges doesn't it?" She said thoughtfully. "And you may be people, but you put your life on the line every time you take to the skies to fight again Thread, that is something to be admired for." She added with a soft smile.

Tsaera shrugged. "Perhaps. It's certainly more dramatic than washing dishes. But there is just as much to be admired in any job well done, and every job, every Craft is as useful as the next. Without Crafters, field hands, our drudges and coopers and kitchen workers, Pern would be just as vulnerable." She smiled. "I've earned my Mastery. I've seen both sides of the picture. But what about you - I could continue my work after Impressing. You'll have to abandon it entirely, even after walking the Tables."

Illiana nodded. "Yes I have done much thought about that, and I love my Craft as it has been my life, all I've ever known. But I also feel like I am ready for a new path, to strike out and try my luck on the Sands. And if I don't Impress that is fine as well, as I wouldn't mind going back to my life as a Crafter. Either path I will be happy in the end. This, being here, still doesn't seem like a reality, I'd never seen a Dragon up close, let alone flown on one and traveled /between/ up until a sevenday ago." She admitted.

"Have you spoken with our-" Tsaera glanced at Illiana's knots. "-Beastcrafters yet?"

"I have been assigned duties with them, and thankfully they are much more friendly to the idea of a female Beascrafter as compared to Garnet Valley Hold. Mostly working with exercising the young runners, milking the cows, feeding and mucking stalls."

"Good. You're settling in fine, then? Your quarters- are they lacking anything?"

Illiana nodded. "I have had a bit of trouble sleeping at night, but I imagine that is only because I've never slept in another bed but my own back at the Hall. And aside getting used to the differences between the Hall and Weyr I think I'm finally starting to settle in and River Bluff is starting to feel more like home. And my quarters are fine, not many other girls are there yet but the beds are slowly starting to fill up."

The Weyrwoman sighed and ran a hand through her grey hair. "I'm not surprised. We've had a little trouble finding willing candidates ever since our beasts became ill. Thankfully, whatever it was seems to be passing... although I'm sure that our Beastcrafters are happy to have another hand to ease the workload." Although it was depressing to admit, the upside of Vilarth's small clutch was that it wouldn't be difficult to find enough Candidates to Stand.

"Well I help where I can, I've never seen anything like what these beasts are plagued with, but I must admit, although a bit scary it is interesting all the same. And speaking of the animals, I should probably go and tend to them, give them their midday meal."

"I'm sure that they would appreciate it. Thank you for coming to introduce yourself, Illiana." Tsaera's lips curved into a slight smile. "And good luck on the Sands."

"Thank-you for taking time out of your day for me." Illiana gave another bow as she exited the Weyrwoman's offices, being sure to close the door tightly after her without making too much noise.
