J'ackt

Saidrene didn't know how it had worked out but she thanked her lucky
stars that it had- she had chore duty with Jenackt! A nervous flutter
went through her stomach as she walked to the outer rim of the
Weyrbowl. They had duty picking numbweed that day. Not a strenuous
activity by any means, since it just required plucking leaves and
putting them in sacks, but tedious nonetheless. She arrived out to see
Jenackt already waiting and her heart began to slug in her chest.

**Easy, Saidrene.** She coached herself as she approached with a smile.

"Hey Jenackt."

"Hey, Saidrene." His face was set in evident tiredness but he moved
with his unconscious prowling walk just the same. He rubbed at his
face and handed her a sack. "Here."

Saidrene looked down to take the bag from Jenackt but all her eyes
could see was the bloody, swollen condition of his knuckles, "Jenackt
what happened?" She ended up taking his hands between her own so she
could get a better look at the damage.

His first reaction was to jerk his hand away from her grip and his arm
twitched as he resisted that urge. "Nothing."

Although a dragonhealer by craft, Saidrene had enough first aid
experience to know that it wasn't 'nothing', "Are you sure? I could
put some numbweed on them and wrap them for you. It would ease some of
the pressure and throbbing I'm sure." There was no possible way that
Jenackt wasn't experiencing pain from his hand.

His fingers twitched on her hand, as though he was unused to physical
contact and wasn't quite sure what to make of her concern. "Numbweed
would be okay, I guess."

"Come on, we are not too far from the dragon infirmary. I can get the
supplies there." She finally released his hand then, taking the empty
numbweed sack and tucking it under her arm as they walked, "I take it
you were, uh," she glanced voer at him, "having a bad day?"

He grabbed her arm lightly to stop her. "There's numbweed here. And we
have work to do. Just smear it on." He shrugged, unconcerned about
bandages.

He glanced at his hands and rolled his shoulders. "Just another day."

Saidrene shook her head, "Yes, we are standing around plenty of
numbweed _leaves_ but unless you have a jar of numbweed hidden
somewhere on you," she gave his body a roving glance, "which I highly
doubt, we are going to need to go to the infirmary to get some. If you
use these leaves raw the sap will blister your skin and then you will
be in even worse shape than you already." She couldn't help the
slightly bossy tone of her voice, she equated to having lived with her
mother.

His mouth twitched in consternation as he glanced down at the leaves
and then back at her. He sighed and then started walking.

"Just another day, huh?" She shook her head, "I really would hate to
see you on one of your bad days then." Saidrene led the way into the
dragon infirmary and over to the supply cabinet. Taking out a jar of
numbweed and a roll of bandages she set them on the desk while she
took his hand once more, "You know they make bunching bags for just
this purpose." She teased lightly as she began smearing numbweed
across the Candidate's bruised and bloody knuckles.

"It was a bad day." Jenackt admitted. He sighed at the application of
numbweed and relaxed, wiggling his fingers. "If I knew where those bags
were, I'd use them."

Finishing with the numbweed, Saidrene took the roll of bandages and
began tightly, but deftly wrapping Jenackt's hand, "I don't know if I
have seen any around here for public use. I could ask my mom about it
though." She finished wrapping the swollen hand and tied off the
bandage, "There, now you should be ready for a few more punches," she
winked, "but hopefully not today."

He watched as she wrapped his hand, then flexed it slightly as if to
test the bandages. "Thanks, Saidrene. " He finally gave a smile, a
brief flash of teeth.

Saidrene thought her heart would stop. Not only had he _said her
name_, but he had actually _smiled_, and shards he was even better
looking when he did! How was that possible? She hoped that she
recovered quickly and hadn't mooned over him, "You're welcome. It's
not quite the same as saving someone from choking but it is the least
I can do for a friend."

He blinked at the odd look that crossed over her face before she
answered. Then something clicked on his head. He'd seen girls look at
him like that before... Realization flared. "Well I appreciate it."
He faltered. She had helped him and hadn't giggled insanely like the
laundry girls or the kitchen girls. And she was rather pretty. But
she was Saibra's daughter and that was something he wasn't even going
to attempt to touch. With a ten foot pole.

"Well, I guess we had better go, the numbweed won't pick itself." She
turned and put the supplies back in the closet before picking up the
empty sack once more, although the tips of her ears were turning a
light shade of pink.

Now that he knew, Jenackt watched her turn away from him. He couldn't
help the fact that his gaze dropped to hips and his brows arched. His
head tilted to the side, and his lip corner lifted slightly in
appreciation before he caught himself and quickly rose.

**Saibra's daughter...Saibra's daughter...**

Saidrene turned around just in time to catch the fading expression on
Jenackt's face and it was as if a jolt of electricity had zipped
through her body. **Was he.... _looking_ at me?** Oh she hoped so!
