K'reyel

K'reyel

She shivered. He couldn't leave her? Did that mean he wanted to but
couldn't? Or that he didn't want to? She skipped over that for a moment
and focused on his question. "K'reyel, if there was an accident, I can't
promise I would let you take me /between/ but I can promise I would strongly
consider it. I don't want to put you through that again.... ever. Even
though I'd love to give you another child. And I wouldn't do anything
without talking to you first."

She wasn't sure what he would think of killing their child. Would he
rather save her, or the baby? "The healers always say if there is a
choice, save the mother.... what would your choice be?"

"You," he said simply. "I need you, Mayel needs you."

She stepped toward him, reaching out gingerly with her hands. "Its a
start..." She paused and kissed him deliberately. "Next time you don't
want to be careful, start at home."

"How about we start with talking more?"

Her hands fell back to her sides when he didn't take them, and she stepped
back away from him when the only response to her kiss was to suggest they
talk more. Her arms wrapped tight around her as if she was cold, she just
nodded. The anger was gone, replaced with a resigned feeling that while he
may love her, he didn't _want_ her. It seemed like he hadn't heard a word
she had said, and he wasn't even sorry. "Thats fine." She guessed he
still planned on sleeping with other people when he wanted but not leaving
her.

"I think I will go check on Mayel."

"Let's go together," he said, holding out his hand to her.

She stared at him in incredible confusion for a moment. How could he hold
out his hand like nothing had happened, when just a moment before, he had
ignored her own gesture, her own hands reaching out to him? She was still
so upset, and it should show. Surely it showed.

She didn't take his hand, she was too confused to touch him. But she nodded.
"If you like. I'm sure he's fine." Her voice was uncertain and her
posture confused. Instead of continuing to look at him, she turned away
from him and headed toward Mayel's sleeping room.

Her reaction confused him, he was trying, couldn't she see that? If only she
could see his thoughts like Erdenth could, that was so much easier
sometimes. As he followed her to where their son lay sleeping, he was sure
that his thoughts were visible across his face.

She could see that something had affected him, but wasn't sure what. She
wished she could read his thoughts, like Erdenth, or like when she could
hear Tero's thoughts. Maybe then he would know how much she still hurt and
believed he would do it again, and she would know if he was really sorry.

Mayel was still sound asleep, though he had thrown his blankets off and was
sprawled out all over his bed.

She paused and leaned down to touch his cheek lightly, but not enough to
wake him.

She looked from their son to her weyrmate and sighed softly. Mayel was
beginning to look more like K'reyel and every other day that made her smile.

She was really done talking, but was re-thinking her wish to sleep alone.
As they stood there, she did reach out for the hand she had ignored moments
ago. What else could she do when faced by her son, and standing next to
his father? "Maybe we should sleep on it all, K'reyel." She whispered, so
softly he would have barely heard, so as not to wake their young son.

He took her hand, opening his arms to gently hold her, if she should want
it. "That sounds like a plan, my love."

She stepped into his arms but said nothing out loud. It would wait.
