A Bad Snack

Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 5, day 10 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentor Approved

Less than a sevenday they had been at River Bluff and already Kylena
was sick, and unless it got worse, there was no way that K'lvin was
sending word to the girl's mother about it or Cylena would demand that
their daughter be sent back. Since it was a Restday, Kylena had spent
the night at his weyr rather than with her foster mother in the
criche. K'lvin had only just touched his head to his pillow and closed
his eyes when he heard the horrible sound of his daughter's wailing cry.

Moving quickly through his weyr, and in his barefeet, K'lvin had been
at his daughter's side in a matter of seconds, quickly assessing the
situation. After nearly an hour of vomiting, K'lvin had decided that
it was finally time to take her to the infirmary. Stamping into his
boots, K'lvin scooped the child up in his arms and trudged through the
Weyrbowl, dawn just barely breaking against the sky.

Walking in to the River Bluff infirmary, K'lvin looked around for a
moment to see if a healer was nearby. He assumed that they posted
someone inside the infirmary at all times for events such as these.

Riveenata had been updating a chart when the man walked in. She stood
up and nodded at him. "Greetings. I'm Journeyman Riveenata. What seems
to be the problem today?"

K'lvin looked down at the girl in his arms, "Tell her what you told me
Kylie."

"I ate some berries off a bush just outside the Weyrbowl." Kylena groaned.

The bronzerider shook his head, "She's been vomiting for the past hour."

"The first thing we need to do is make sure it's all out of her
system. After that, we can give her water," Riveenata said. "Do you
still feel like you need to throw up? Is anything solid still coming
out?"

The girl bobbed her head from side to side. K'lvin translated,
"Nothing else is coming up, just dry heaves." The bronzerider was glad
that it was nothing more serious than a berry, but there were plants
out there that were poisonous. If Kylena had gotten hold of one of
those....

"That's good news." She addressed both of them again. "We're going to
wash your mouth out with water."

She headed to pull some warm water into a bowl, get a spitting bowl,
and bring two towels. "Put some water into your mouth and going to
spit into the bowl, okay? And we should wash your hands too."

K'lvin set Kylena down on a nearby examination table and then stood
back, his arms folded across his chest to watch the healer work with
his daughter. Kylena obeyed meekly, obviously weak from the ordeal and
more than a little embarrassed, "Yes ma'am." She murmured softly
before washing her hands in one of the bowls and then drying them off.
Next the child rinsed out her mouth, gargling, before spitting it into
the empty bowl that Riveenata had brought.

"Good job," the healer said, smiling at the girl. "How do you feel now?"

She looked at her father. "I'd like to keep her for a candlemark to
make sure she doesn't get sick again and that nothing like a rash
shows up. If she's clear, I can give her something to settle her
stomach and you can take her home."

The bronzerider nodded, "I am going to swing by the Dining Cavern then
and have some breakfast. I will be back by to collect her." K'lvin
told the healer before touching his daughter on top of the head, his
fingers mussing her hair affectionately, "I will be back shortly. Do
what the nice lady says."

Kylena responded back with a nod of her head as she stretched out on
the cot, clearly exhausted. K'lvin flashed a smile of gratitude at
Riveenate before turning and leaving the infirmary. He was going to
need a strong cup of klah to help him get through the rest of the day
with so little sleep.

"She'll be right here when you get back," Riven assured him. She
grinned at the little girl. "Want a blanket?"

"Yes, please." Kylena said in a small voice.

The Healer got a blanket and offered it to the girl. "I'm going to sit
next to you while I update these charts. Let me know if you feel
unwell, and you can ask me questions anytime if you're bored."

Kylena tucked the blanket beneath her chin as she drew her knees up,
"Thank you." She said quietly before closing her eyes and settling in
to wait for her father to return.
