Description: The Weyrwoman comes by to check on Jeyme after she hears about
her miscarriage.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 4, day 15 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: D'hol, Sh'del, K'deren
D'hol had stepped out to talk to the Weyrlingmaster and let him know
about Jeyme's miscarriage, leaving Jeyme behind in the infirmary bed
alone. The feelings of hollowness that had been there the night before
were now intensified tenfold as she lay staring up at the ceiling of
the infirmary. Even though D'hol had been faithfully by her side
through the night, every bit as supportive as he had said he would be,
she still worried about what would happen next.
A familiar voice in the infirmary momentarily broke Jeyme out of her
reverie. The voice belonged to that of the Dolphin Cove Weyrwoman-
Cyradis. Jeyme's jaw tightened a bit. She didn't think she could bare
to see the happily pregnant Weyrwoman after she had just miscarried
D'hol's child.
When Cyradis got her morning report from the infirmary, she normally
scanned it quickly for any changes from the previous day and then
decided who she should check on more more closely. But while there
were two weyrlings on the roster that hadn't been there the day
before, one name and the notes next to it got her out from behind her
desk and down to the infirmary earlier than usual.
She spoke to the attending healer and visited several of the other
patients before pulling back the curtain that provided some privacy
for the young greenrider. "Jeyme," she said with concern in her voice
and eyes. "How are you feeling?"
If anything the concern in the woman's voice made Jeyme feel that much
more hollow. **Why me? Why couldn't I carry a child? I didn't do
anything wrong.** She had followed all of the strict rules from the
healers to the exact letter.
"Have you ever had a miscarriage, Weyrwoman?"
"Yes," was all she said even though there was so much more to it then
that. "That's why I came to see how you're doing."
"If you have had a miscarriage then you know how I am feeling.
Hollow." Jeyme swallowed, "One minute everything was fine, and the
next I was here."
"I do," she said coming closer and sitting on the edge of the bed.
"It's a loss you can't describe to anyone who hasn't been through it.
I know I didn't expect to be hit that hard by it." She had a feeling
Jeyme wasn't ready to hear that it would get better. But it would...
in time.
"Yeah," Jeyme agreed, "I saw some women at the Hold go through it but
I never thought it could be that bad. Especially since I wasn't very
far along but..." She trailed off a moment before continuing, "We
already had so many plans."
"Nothing prepares you for the emotional toll," she reached over and
put her hand on Jeyme's knee. "This is harder for female riders than
it is for holder women. We're exposed to conditions that cause us to
abort. I am sure you'll get another chance."
"Yes, but I want another chance with D'hol." She didn't worry that she
couldn't have another child, but this one with D'hol hadn't exactly
been planned. What if he was silently relieved that he was no longer
tied to Jeyme in that way? She knew he wanted no lasting commitments,
and that was mostly due to the woman that was visiting her.
Cyradis paused for a moment to consider her words carefully. She knew
better than to think her prior relationship with the bronzerider was
any kind of a secret. Especially from this lovely young woman who'd
been his bedmate now for so many weeks.
"I hope you get that chance Jeyme," she said softly. "I truly do." She
hoped D'hol would get that chance as well because it was obvious to
her that this young woman really did care for him.
"Do you need anything?"
Jeyme shook her head, "Nothing besides my own bed." She gave a flicker
of a smile at this and then met Cyradis's eyes, "Thank you for
coming."
Cyradis gave a short nod, "Its the least I can do." Though she wasn't
sure what she meant by her own bed but wasn't about to speculate at
this point. "I'm sure you'll rest better there than here." She stood
ready to take her leave. "Has Sh'del been informed?"
"D'hol is talking to him about it now." Jeyme confirmed. She hoped
that the healers would release her soon, after all, there was nothing
more they could do for her now, other than let her rest.
"Good, good," her lips curved up. "If you do need anything don't
hesitate to have Quinneth bespeak Panitath." She turned and walked
through the curtains in search of the other injured Weyrling. The
experience hadn't been quite as awkward as she'd feared it might going
in. But then that spoke well of the young woman and brought fresh hope
to her for D'hol. Perhaps he'd found someone who could help him move
on. Only time would tell.
She breathed her own thanks to the universe that had led her to
K'deren and the healing of her own broken spirit. Then she put on her
best smile and entered the next privacy screen. "Good morning D'fez.
How is that arm?"
