Jeyme

It was the first day that Jeyme had been allowed back into her regular
training since the miscarriage. Even though she still mourned the loss
of D'hol's child, Jeyme was grateful to be back on track with
graduation with the rest of her class. Sitting down with her fellow
Weyrlings at their familiar table in the Dining Cavern, she was
greeted with a few hesitant smiles.

"Jeyme, it's good to have you back. We heard about... Well, you know."
Chyra, a blond Weyrling a couple of Turns younger than Jeyme spoke.

Jeyme smiled, "It's okay, you can say it, I had a miscarriage." She
knew it was awkward for her classmates to try and relate.

"But aren't you still living with the Wingleader?" S'avn, a blue
Weyrling, butted in. The conversation was suddenly drawing more
attenion as the Weyrlings sought answers for the rumors that had been
going around.

"Yes." Jeyme answered.

S'avn raised an eyebrow, "As what? His personal bed warmer?" A snicker
followed the question.

Jeyme pierced the bluerider with a cold glare that she was sure she
had picked up from D'hol, "Not that it is any of your business but I
am his weyrmate."

Chyra kicked the laughing S'avn under the table, "Shut up!" She hissed
at him through gritted teeth.

"His _weyrmate_? You are gullible aren't you? Haven't you heard?
Everyone knows that the baby the Weyrwoman is carrying is his. Don't
you think it awfully coincidental that after her long lost lover
returns she becomes pregnant? A drudge even saw them in his office
together."

Jeyme felt the blood drain from her face. She knew that Cyradis was
pregnant, D'hol had never said anything about it being his though.
Could it be true? She and D'hol hadn't been exclusive before they
weyrmated... well, she didn't even know if they were exclusive _now_.

**No, he would have told me if it was his.** She thought.

"Don't listen to him, Jeyme." Chyra said leaning over the table.

But what about this drudge that had supposedly seen Cyradis and D'hol
together in his office.... Was that true? Jeyme remembered her
conversation with Wylra, especially the part where the old greenrider
had asked her if she could "keep" D'hol if Cyradis decided that she
wanted him.

Jeyme stood.

"Where are you going?" Chyra asked, her kind eyes tense.

She looked at the smug face of S'avn, "I am not hungry."

As she was leaving Jeyme heard S'avn say to Chyra, "What? I did her a
favor telling her the truth. There is no point in her walking around
disillusioned."

Jeyme didn't know where to go, but she found herself walking the
familiar path to the weyr that she shared with D'hol.

It wasn't difficult to find Jeyme, especially with a young green
listening in to the turmoil in her riders mind. With his own rider
busy in a meeting, Yumath settled next to the path and allowed his
tail to block Jeyme's way. He lowered his great head, eyes whirling in
an intense gaze at the young weyrling.

Surprised by the bronze tail that hindered her entrance, Jeyme looked
up into the watchful eyes of D'hol's bronze Yumath, "Yumath?" She
asked, wondering why the dragon was blocking the entry way.

The bronze blinked at her and lowered his head, nudging gently with
his nose. He sent a quick message to Quinneth to relay. }:Tell Yours
that I know she is upset and would like to know why. Mine is with
other riders in a meeting but will be out soon. :{ His tail thumped
slightly.

}:She says it was just a hard day fitting back in with the other
Weyrlings.:{ Quinneth replied to Yumath, although she was not
completely sure that Jeyme was being truthful about what was really
bothering her. }:She says she would be better if she could just have
some time alone in the weyr.:{

There was a low rumble, but Yumath moved his tail to the side. His
eyes followed her and the quick message he shot to D'hol was answered
with a mild flash of irritation. He would be in the weyr after the
meeting and unless it was an emergency, he was occupied.

Quietly, Yumath spoke to Quinneth. }: Mine is busy right now, but will
be back to see what is the matter. :{

}:Mine says that is is not necessary to bother your rider with his
right now. She will be fine.:{ Quinneth relayed for Jeyme. The last
thing Jeyme wanted was for D'hol to think she was being dramatic over
something silly. First she needed to clear her thoughts and think
about what S'avn had said.

}: He is already aware that she is bothered. :{ Yumath snorted softly.
}: She is upset over the hatchling? :{
Yumath was fully aware of the loss and the emotions that stirred
whenever an egg didn't hatch.

}:I think it might have something to do with the lost hatchling. I am
not sure, she is doing a very good job of keeping it private.:{
Quinneth said, more than a little agitated that Jeyme wouldn't even
tell _her_ what was wrong.

**You will just blab it to Yumath.** Jeyme shot back at her from where
she sat in the weyr, her fingers busily working on some embroidery. It
was something she had done as a "lady" resident back at the Hold when
she had been bored, and the tedious work still served to help keep her
mind busy.

}:It will be handled. :{ Yumath assured Quinneth.

It took perhaps a candlemark, long enough for the meeting to be
finished and for D'hol to scoop up meat rolls and klah to take to the
weyr. He had not eaten yet and moreover, he was tired. He opened the
door to the weyr, set down the meatrolls and klah urn, and then sat,
pouring himself a cup before looking over at Jeyme. He was quiet as he
watched her embroider, took a sip of klah and then simply waited.

When D'hol sat down Jeyme glanced up at him, and then quickly turned
her eyes back to her embroidery. She had been struggling between a rock
and a hard place ever since she came back to the weyr. Did she ask him
about Cyradis and risk his anger? Or not ask him and let the
questions gnaw away at her.

Finally, she let out a slow exhale and then looked up at him, "The
child Cyradis is carrying... Is it yours?"

His waiting paid off, but not in the way he expected. Brows shot up
and he stared at her before slowly sitting forward and putting his cup
down. "Excuse me?" He frowned, clearly irritated. "Where in the blazes
did you get _that_ idea? As far as I am aware, the child is
K'deren's."

"I was told at dinner that you and Cyradis were seen in your office,
all over each other apparently, and so now people are saying that the
baby is yours." Jeyme told him, proud that the words did not come out
in an accusatory tone. After all, she had no real reason to think that
anything S'avn had said was true, except for D'hol and Cyradis's past.

"And this is what you're upset about? A rumor?" He pursed his lips and
then drummed his fingers on the table sharply. "The last time I bedded
Cyradis was before Keilya was born. Turns ago. So I'm quite sure that
her child isn't mine. I'm likely not to bed her again unless Yumath
flies Panitath. She and I are both aware of the possibility of that
happening and you should be too."

"I am completely aware of the possibility D'hol. It wasn't an
unreasonable question since you and I hadn't really ever discussed
being exclusive." Jeyme pointed out, still calmly holding on to her
embroidery, "What about her being in your office?"

There was a sharp exhalation before he took another long drink of klah
and picked up a meatroll. "Cyradis is often in my office, Jeyme." His
brow was furrowed deeply. "And what, may I ask, is the point of being
weyrmated if the goal is not to be exclusive?" He leaned forward, took
a bit of meatroll, chewed and swallowed. "I have every intention of
being exclusive except during Flights." He rested his elbows on his
knees to peer at her, his jaw tight. "Whatever happened with Cyradis
happened before I made that committment." His words were sharp.

His affirmation that they would be exclusive made relief spread
through Jeyme's system. The fact that he said "whatever happened"
meant that something definitely _had_ happened in that office. What,
she didn't know, and at this point, she didn't need to know, so she
relaxed back against the couch. "That is all I wanted to know. I think
what was most upsetting was the way in which the information was
given to me. Some people have no tact, and seem to enjoy trying to
ruin your day."

Even though she may have been relaxed, D'hol was not. He was not
angry, but was irritated at the necessity of the conversation. "You're
going to hear rumors constantly. You can't let them bother you so much
that even Yumath is concerned or that you skip your meals." He
gestured to the plate of meatrolls. "And especially if you have a
green that tattles to her ledge-mate." He poured her a cup of klah.
"Who decided to ruin your day?"

Jeyme gave D'hol a dead-panned look but took up a meat roll, "You mean
it wouldn't bother your mood at all if you sat down to eat with your
'friends' and they said, 'Hey D'hol, you may think Jeyme is your
weyrmate but she's really sleeping with someone else, probably having
their baby too'?" She raised an eyebrow at that, to make her point,
and then put the meatroll in her mouth, "And it was S'avn, an annoying
bluerider."

He considered that."It would annoy me, but then again, I also know
that you're busy during your weyrling training and I keep you occupied
at night, so you wouldn't have a lot of time for anyone else." He
cracked a slight smile. "There is a chance that one of your Flights
could result in a pregnancy. It's a common enough occurence; there not
always certainty as who really fathers a child. But I can see why it
would upset you. But our private matters are just that. Private." He
pushed the plate towards her. "S'avn. I don't recognize the name. What
exactly did he say?"

"I guess it doesn't matter," Jeyme said taking another meatroll, "just
stuff about how gullible I am to think I am your weyrmate because
clearly everyone in the Weyr knows, or at least thinks, that you are
the father of Cyradis's baby... And then the whole thing about seeing
the two of you in your office. I left after that, I didn't really care
to hear anything else that he had to say." She didn't care if the rest
of the Weyr thought she was some naive, young Weyrling clinging to
D'hol with stars in her eyes, she knew what went on between them
behind closed doors and that was all that mattered.

"Let them think that. Cyradis and I know the truth and so do you.
They're going to think it even more should we be outspoken about a
denial." He mused for a moment. "S'avn, hmm?" His fingers drummed
against the table in thought, but there was a dangerous flicker in his
eyes. He would have to have a small chat with the boy.
