K'sedel

K'sedel

She'd felt a little bad about it. After everything that had happened, Rhosyn
had finally done some counting and realized what day it was. **Hatchingday was his birthingday. Ahh
shardit.** Looking around, she realized she had to get him a gift. It wasn't like she
could just hop on Orlaith and go somewhere on Pern and get something. No.

So she had gone to Stores and using a Weyrwoman's prerogative, she?d
found something she hoped he would like. It might have been part of a
tithe sometime ago, perhaps, but she thought it was fitting.

"Come!" called out K'sedel.

Opening the door, she peeked in before coming in the rest of the way. It was
just a bit more awkward, but not much. At least not yet. "So...sorry about
Hatchingday and all that, but I did some counting." And then she brought a present from
behind her back. "Happy late birthingday!" She looked almost like a child, hoping to
please him. Rhosyn did know that she probably drove her Weyrleader to drink with all of
her messes. It wasn't like she meant it-not really.

"You really didn't have to," he said.

"I know but fair is fair and you deserve it. Besides, maybe everyone else
forgot to because of me and my messes so I thought maybe it needed a bit of remembering."
Maybe his weyrmate had made him a cake-that would be like Ciara. She was the mother Rhosyn was
not.

He pulled the package closer, unwrapping it. "I meant it," he began as
he admired the belt buckle. "This is truly something special."

She watched him, but didn't move closer, proving a lack of intimacy though
she had indeed been in bed with the man several times. "Will it fit?"

"I think it will," he said after a moment. "Certainly, and it will go with
the new gather clothes that Ciara insisted I get."

"Oh well that's good then. Did you get anything else?" She thought maybe
at least his children had remembered him.

"A rather fine bottle of a fruit liqueur from K'reyel, Akessa, K'deren and
Meredel somehow managed to find a Harper to paint Nikornath for me," the
Weyrleader said, a smile on his face. "Radela had done a drawing."

"R'sedel?" she asked, thinking of her friend. He was a funny
one, though, and she couldn't guess what he would give his father-much
less how he would act with his father. Rhosyn hadn't really seen the two of
them in the same room often come to think of it.

"He's planned dinner in a few days, said he wanted to organize something fun."

"Oh well that'll be good then." Something inside her remembered the big
family she had had once upon a time and how she had always yearned for
it. Ever since the day she'd been sent away, she had felt tossed out into
the world with nothing to cling to, except for her dragon.

"I'm sure you'd be welcome to join us?"

"Hmmm maybe. Let me know when it is." She was already retreating. It was
true she felt awkward around the children-always had. Rhosyn especially didn't
want to be reminded of that now when she was going to have one of her own. "Anyway,
enjoy your gift and sorry about it all."

"Thank you, and once again you didn't have to."
