The sounds of the infirmary were becoming more and more of a
background to Bahji?s thoughts. The soft murmur of voices and
sometimes groans no longer had her jerking to attention at every
utterance, but it did not help her boredom. She wanted to get up, but
that wasn?t an option. She reminded herself again to talk to Reeva
about when she could go back to her own room. Her musing was stopped
by a newer voice, close by and her brow furrowed. She knew that voice;
she nudged Burst to attention and the little bronze lifted his head to
blink at her. ?Burst. Go to D?arvn.? The bronze tilted his head from
side to side, unwilling to leave her side. ?Burst,? she repeated ?see
if he?s in the infirmary. It?s important.?
The little bronze rose, leapt into the air and betweened. He appeared
over D?arvn with a loud chirrup of greeting. Bahji heard and turned
her head to the sound, raising her voice just a little. ?D?arvn??
Pain, pain, and more pain. That was about all he remembered for what
seemed like forever. Falzeth reached into his pain shroud to soothe
his mind when he tried to swim back up to consciousness but invariably
other voices would intrude and they'd send him back where he he
couldn't feel.
This time had been different. He'd got farther before the pain
started. Calling out he had asked for numbweed only because he didnt'
want them to put him out again. That had ended up with an argument
and finally he'd almost started yelling at the young journeyman
healer. "NO," he said firmly pushing the cup away with one good hand.
The little bronze startled him but he smiled at the greeting. "Burst!"
Then he heard Bahji who sounded pretty close by. "Bahji," he queried.
The bronze peered closely at D'arvn and with a croon, settled down
near D'arvn's hand and nudged it. The mental image he sent Bahji made
her wince. "I'm here. It sounds like you're pretty close." She paused.
"What happened to you?"
"Falzeth and I were scored," he said and lifted his fingers to scratch
a tiny eyeridge."What are you doing in here," he asked puzzled.
Burst crooned at the scratch, but he didn't stay settled for long.
Protective of his pet, he wiggled away and leapt back into the air to
fly only two beds away towards Bahji. He plopped back down at her side
and imperiously nudged his head under her hand for more petting.
"I didn't know you were hurt. No one told me." Her lips turned
downward. At his question, she was silent for long minutes before she
answered, her tone more subdued. "I fell."
"Oh no," he said and tried to shift in his bed to look in her
direction. "How did you fall?" He knew it was a pretty silly question
given the multitude of ways she could have tripped or stumbled. But
that was part of the reason he'd given the little flit egg to her.
There was a long silence. Should she mention what she had been told?
"I was told that..." She struggled with trying to explain. "Someone
left something on the stairs to trip me." Unseen, her hand went to her
stomach. "I'll be in here for a while until I can get up and move
around."
The way she said it made anger rise in him like he hadn't experienced
in turns. "What? On purpose?"
"That's what I was told." Her voice was softer, barely able to span
the distance between them.
"Faranth," he swore under his breath. "Did Burst see anything?" He had
no idea what kind of person could do that kind of thing to someone
else.
"No. He was in E'rae's weyr, asleep." She frowned to herself. "I guess
I should have had him with me." Maybe if she had, she wouldn't have
the hollow feeling in her lower stomach now...the absence.
He thumped his good arm against the mattress in frustration. But his
head was hurting so much he didn't yell the way he wanted to. "Oh
Bahji, I'm so sorry." was all he could manage.
"It's not your fault." Bahji was quick to reassure him, but her voice
held no small amount of grief. "But I lost my child." Her voice
tightened as though she was trying to control her emotions as best she
could.
"Oh sweetie," he sighed. "How's E'rae?"
There was a moment of silence before she answered. "I think...he's
doing okay. He doesn't show much, D'arvn. We're not exactly weyrmates
or anything. I never really know what he's thinking."
While he was tiring he couldn't help but wonder what he would have
felt had he been the father and then suddenly found it all gone. He
couldn't really wrap his mind around it, the loss would be almost
overwhelming. "I'm sure he's quite unhappy with whoever did this to
you and his child Bahji. I know I would be."
"I'm sure he is." Her voice was a little uncertain. E'rae was so
closed off to her in so many ways, that she still couldn't read him.
He was intensely private about his emotions and did not share them
with her. It was a constant wall that she felt between them. "You
sound tired. Get some rest, D'arvn."
"I will," he said closing his eyes. "Oh," they popped open again.
"Keep Burst with you unless you have someone else with you. Don't be
alone." With that off his chest he felt he could try and get some
sleep.
"He won't leave me unless I make him now." Her voice was soft, but she
agreed. She settled back on her cot and sighed softly. "Sleep."
He briefly wondered where U'foinnin was before he sank back into a deep sleep.
