The bluerider couldn't think about her down there with the healers. He needed
her to be okay. Still, he had to tell the Weyrleader before much time had passed.
If there was anything...it had to be done quickly. And the baby... E'rae didn't
want to think about it. Instead, he focused on his anger. And there was a lot of
it. He had made sure to get that rope before going to the Infirmary. Now that they
were taking care of Bahji and there was nothing he could do-they wouldn't even let
him back there-he went to someone who could do something.
Hoping one of his wingleaders would be in their office, E'rae positively stalked to that part
of the Weyr and approached, searching to see if there was a light on. Leith
tried his best to console his rider, but the blue was worried.
K'reyel was working late, well a little later than usual to try and free up
some time later in the sevenday to spend with his family when the bluerider arrived.
"Sir?" Unusual for him, his face looked harried and it was clear he was upset as
he entered the doorway, somewhat relieved to see K'reyel there at least. So
he didn't have to go find one of them elsewhere. "I need a bit of your time
please."
"Well you better come in properly and sit down." K'reyel put the hides to
one side and waited for the bluerider to settle himself.
He came in slowly and sat down, but he was still agitated and he rested his
hands on his knees. "Sir, I just came from the Infirmary. Bahji...she's pregnant
and...she fell down the stairs and I don't think she's going to be pregnant anymore. But
she knew those stairs and she wouldn't fall but...I found a rope." His tone turned
icy as he produced the rope and laid it on K'reyel's desk. "Someone tripped her."
"I see," the bluerider was obviously upset, and if he was likely to lose his
child it might be clouding his judgment. "You think that this was deliberate?"
"Has to be. Otherwise there is no explanation for that rope being there
where it was when it was." He didn't know the why. Whether or not it was simply
because Bahji was vulnerable due to blindness, that it was because she was Bahji, or
even just because she was pregnant, he didn't know.
"And there was nobody else around when it happened?" asked K'reyel. "Nobody
who could have seen or heard anything?"
"Not that I know of. There was no one there when I arrived and I was the first one
to find her." And to see her like that-lying twisted and broken...something threatened
to break within him when he thought about it. He hadn't kept her safe.
"What does your lady say?"
"My lady sir?" E'rae gave him a confused look.
"Bahji, did she say if she noticed anything out of the ordinary beforehand?"
"She's still unconscious in the infirmary." The rest was left unspoken. She
might not wake up. E'rae was afraid of that, but he didn't voice it. Dragonriders
lived with death, but deliberate death like this...it was different.
"I see, well have the healers send me a report, and if you can ask the
Headwoman to come and see me, and I'll ask her to look into things." The
headwoman was someone you expected to see poking into things, and if there
had been foul play, well there were some people who might find it easier to
talk to her.
"I will." E'rae dreaded going back there, but he didn't have anywhere else
to go so he got up and went to find Solieira.
