Once they got into the Dining Cavern and settled, Rhosyn wrapped the
towel around her and got comfortable in her chair at the head table.
Solieira knew more about nutrition that pregnant women needed than
she did so she trusted whatever they put in front of her and just packed it away until
her hunger was assuaged. Thanking the drudges for the plates, she slowly
began to eat. Stopping once the first plate was half empty, she looked back
up, remembering that N'vanik was there and she needed to talk to him.
N'vanik sipped at juice and watched her eat. "I guess that's why
they call it eating for two."
She almost blushed but then realized she wasn't embarrassed in the
slightest. She had an excuse for being hungry now. "Well, it's usually easier to
eat a lot in the middle of the day than in the mornings and evenings. Less
heartburn that way."
"Hmm, makes sense." The dining cavern wasn't the _best_ place to have
this conversation, but he wanted it out of the way. "So, obviously
you're going to foster. Do you have any idea who yet?"
"A very good idea." And she didn't think he would gainsay her choice in this
matter since she had chosen well. "Weyrdragonhealer Y'gel and and his
weyrmate, Briata-one of our hears-alls."
His eyebrow twitched up. "Oh? Didn't they just have a baby?"
"They did-a little boy. And so far, everything has been fine.
That means that the baby would have a foster sibling to grow with, but
wouldn't have a whole bunch of them to compete with for attention either."
Not that Rhosyn herself hadn't had a larger family, but out in a Hold it
was different.
"Good, good. I like that." The child growing up in a small family
rather than part of a brood of weyrbrats. Yeah, that would be nice.
"Do you think you'll visit him a lot? Or her?" Rhosyn seemed more
at ease now, but she'd been less than pleased when she found out she
was pregnant. He was worried she might not pay much attention to the
kid once it was born.
"Well I mean, the child will know I am its mother. And it will be here in the
Weyr with me so I'm sure I will see him or her. I am busy, of course, which
is why it's always necessary for goldriders to foster their children."
She would try but she couldn't always be there, hence the second family. Briata and
Y'gel would be the baby's support since Rhosyn couldn't be. And they would do a
far better job of it. "Just like you're busy."
Just like he thought. "Not too busy to visit sometimes. I wish River
Bluff wasn't so far away." It was easy to travel with a dragon, but
the time difference was a problem. "I want the kid to know I love him."
"Well I wish you were here too but we've both had that conversation so
many times. And if we were holders and didn't have to run Weyrs, we could
just pop out five kids and be there whenever we wanted." She popped a piece
of fruit into her mouth, chewed, and swallowed. "You can visit whenever you
like. You can _make_ time." Her eyes shifted and she wondered if he caught
her meaning.
"Not a good idea. It wears on you and it's dangerous." Sure it was
tempting. He'd thought about it before. "Only in emergencies."
"I know it wears but every great now and again for just a little while, there's
no harm done if it's necessary." She shrugged and went back to eating for a
bit.
"Will you take the kid to visit Dolphin Cove once in a while?"
"I suppose I could. I'm sure Y'gel can take them places too." The other thing she
liked, but she didn't mention it was that Briata had been holdbred and Y'gel
was from the Weyr so the baby would have both sets of values-the two worlds
Rhosyn had grown up in. Finishing her plate as they both continued to chat,
she led N'vanik back to her weyr. **Time for a bath and a change**
N'vanik stopped in the living area as Rhosyn continued toward the
bathing room. Finally he didn't feel like he had all those eyes
watching him. Sometimes he liked being the center of gossip, but this
just seemed too personal. He could wait for her to take a bath. It
might be smarter that way, but he wanted to get this off his chest as
soon as possible. "Mind if I join you?"
"Not at all," she said quickly even as she dropped the tunic that
was mostly dry by then. Stepping out of it and carefully down into the
bathing pool, it was easier for N'vanik to see just how much her body had
changed already as she slid into the water and then under it to get her
hair wet.
Her belly stuck out and he couldn't help noticing her breasts were
larger. His gaze lingered as she slipped into the bath. N'vanik pulled
off his boots and left them near the door. He sat near the edge of
the bath, legs crossed. "I know I didn't have the best reaction to
the news, but this -- the baby-- it matters to me. A lot. Talryne
got pregnant a while ago and ended it /between/. It was just ...
a terrible miscommunication." It felt like being stabbed in the gut
every time he thought about it. "I never wanted kids before, but with
her... things changed."
She frowned when she saw he wasn't coming in, but then went about
her bathing anyway, listening to him talk, and obviously paying
attention. "Sorry to hear that." Rhosyn could understand doing so, though, so
she didn't say anything about what Talryne did. She did bristle slightly when
he said Talryne had made him want children. **If she had gone through with
it first, maybe he wouldn't want this one so much. Maybe he would have wanted
hers more**
Soaping up her hair, she enjoyed the water on her skin and the feeling of
being clean. "I think that's why I wanted Briata and Y'gel. The child will
have a stable, loving family life. Not like me when mine fell apart. It's important."
"My father beat me and told me I was worthless. I want this baby to
know that I love it, that it matters." He hadn't been able to protect
Cosani, but he had a chance with this kid.
"Come in here...come feel it." It didn't really move yet. Not
like they said it would in another month, but Rhosyn knew that it was
soothing to put her hands on the belly. "I had my family split up and then
when I Impressed...they told me I was only worth my dragon. This baby will
have nothing like that. It'll have better."
In her mind, she was already thinking of names though she hadn't told
anyone. It was hard since she really didn't know for sure that it was N'vanik's. It
could still be K'sedel's even though she wanted it to be his. **Vansyn, Kosyna,
Nysi...**
That got him to move. N'vanik stripped off his clothes and slid into
the water. He laid a hand on Rhosyn's stomach, still hardly believing
there was a little life in there. "I really want it to be mine," he
said softly. He met Rhosyn's gaze. "Ours."
"Well in a few months maybe we'll know." She let him touch her and
have his moments, though she pushed her back to his front while he
was touching. It felt so good to have him near again-to smell him. She
craved him like she craved roasted tubers in orange sauce. Her hands
went down to his hips behind her. She rubbed them up and down, wanting
that intimacy she hadn't had in so long. She had felt so alone since the
Flight without him around. And with everything happening...
N'vanik felt a twinge of resistance. All the months of anger, putting
a wall up around his heart. But it took so much energy to fight, and
she _had_ apologized. With his free hand, he brushed her hair aside
and pressed a kiss to the spot where her neck met her shoulder. The
hand on her stomach slid up to cup her breast.
